A review essay on a book by Clare Virginia Eby, Dreiser and Veblen: Saboteurs of the Status Quo (Columbia: U of Missouri Press, 1998), which attempts to induce discussions between literary analysts & social scientists by constructing a dialogue between Thorstein Veblen & Theodore Dreiser. Eby addresses Veblen & Dreiser as cultural critics, or "oppositional intellectuals," maintaining that both positioned themselves outside mainstream norms/values. However, her arguments supporting the intellectual accomplishments of both men are somewhat problematic, especially in relation to Dreiser. The effectiveness of Veblen & Dreiser as cultural critics & oppositional intellectuals is critiqued on a chapter-by-chapter basis, arguing that Veblen is shown to be a greater saboteur of the status quo than Dreiser, whose fiction does not reveal social criticism, although it offers excellent psychologistic explanations of US culture. Nonetheless, Eby presents a well-written & compelling case for dialogue between novelists, literary analysts, & social scientists. Adapted from the source document.
New Voices in Arab Cinema focuses on contemporary filmmaking since the 1980s, but also considers the longer history of Arab cinema. Taking into consideration film from the Middle East and North Africa and giving a special nod to films produced since the Arab Spring and the Syrian crisis, Roy Armes explores themes such as modes of production, national cinemas, the role of the state and private industry on film, international developments in film, key filmmakers, and the validity of current notions like globalization, migration and immigration, and exile. This landmark book offers both a coheren
Jenny Jochens captures in fascinating detail the lives of women in pagan and early Christian Iceland and Norway - their work, sexual behavior, marriage customs, reproductive practices, familial relations, leisure activities, religious practices, and legal constraints and protections. Much of this information also applies to everyday life in the entire Germanic world. Conveying the experiences not only of aristocrats but also of ordinary farmers, the author draws from her extensive knowledge of the oldest and fullest record of the Germanic tribes. Women in Old Norse Society places particular emphasis on changing sexual mores and the impact of the imposition of Christianity by the clergy and the Norwegian kings. It also demonstrates the vital role women played in economic production: homespun was used for every conceivable domestic purpose; the lengths of cloth became the standard of measurement for local commercial exchange and were used to obtain commodities abroad. Jochens's masterly command of the Old Norse narratives and legal texts enables her to provide a rich social history that includes the fullest analysis to date of pagan and Christian marriage and the first comprehensive study of infanticide in the North
