Education is a values-based and complex field in which research evidence is multidisciplinary and multi-paradigmatic, and therefore highly contested. In this paper I argue that within such a field we must value and depend on teachers' research-informed professional judgements, on what and how to teach in their school and classroom. However, there are increasing signs of professional development materials aimed at teachers which are part of the 'post-truth' world. By post-truth we mean where objective facts are less influential than appeals to emotion and personal belief. Some of these professional development materials are based on weak scholarship, but more insidiously some are part of ideological agendas, so that they should be viewed as part of post-truth politics. In considering the research literacy of teachers, the paper aims to provoke discussion and response, from teachers, teacher educators and policymakers, to the possible influence of post-truth on teachers' beliefs and professional judgements.

The communicative language teaching (CLT) approach and its fundamental principles, including learning to communicate through interaction and engagement, are generally upheld by theories in the area of second language acquisition even though by and large implementing CLT is to some degree difficult and ineffective in many ESL (English as a second language) and EFL (English as a foreign language) contexts. This action research is undertaken to assist a small group of Thai EFL school teachers in developing and implementing context-sensitive CLT through a teacher training program designed for their own professional development as secondary school teachers. Two methods are employed, an observation and a task evaluation. It is found that from the teachers' practice using CLT in teaching, their classes are hardly communicative in nature as communication is constrained and rather unilateral, mostly directed by the teachers. Some recommendations are made to the teachers under study based on the methods used, addressing fluency rather than accuracy if students' communicative competence is the goal.

Worldwide, the importance of quality instruction in schools cannot be underestimated. However, over the years, the instructional quality in Nigerian public secondary schools seems persistently low, and worrisome based on the academic performance of students in external examinations. This has continued to be a subject of concern to individuals, the public, government, and other stakeholders. This study investigates teachers' characteristics and the instructional quality in public secondary schools in Nigeria. A hypothesis was formulated and tested in the study. Questionnaires were used to collect data from teachers and principals, as well as to assess the instructional quality in Nigerian public secondary schools. A total of 2,222 respondents (1,548 teachers and 774 principals) were sampled using both simple random and census sampling techniques respectively across the 774 Local Government Areas in Nigeria. The results show that teachers' characteristics have a significant influence on the instructional quality in public secondary schools in Nigeria. The study recommends that government should prioritise teacher professionalism and employ only certificated teachers to teach in secondary schools in Nigeria geared toward achieving an improved instructional quality.

Teacher efficacy is largely unexplored in Trinidad and Tobago, resulting in a deficit in understanding of teachers' beliefs about their ability to teach. This is important since teachers' beliefs influence how they feel about their work, how they assess and perform teaching tasks, and the educational experiences they provide for their students. This study examined three dimensions of teacher efficacy of secondary school teachers who were newly enrolled in an in-service teacher training programme at a university in Trinidad and Tobago. Teacher efficacy for classroom management, instructional strategies, and student engagement was measured using the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale, and analysed for differences by participants' sex, age, years of service, and school type. There were no differences in teacher efficacy by teachers' sex and years of service. Teachers over 45 years reported significantly stronger teacher efficacy for classroom management than younger colleagues. Teachers at government-assisted schools reported significantly higher teacher efficacy for classroom management and student engagement than those at government schools. Follow-up research should examine the sources of efficacy information that influence teachers' practice, in order to determine the contextual factors related to the school environment that influence teacher efficacy, and the influence of teacher training on teacher efficacy beliefs.

This paper examined benefits of mentoring to the teachers especially the new teachers in the school system. The concept of mentoring was discussed vis-a-vis other related terms. The qualities of a mentor teacher were elucidated. How to start a mentoring programme as well as the four phases of mentoring relationship were fully highlighted and discussed. The "new teachers" to be introduced to administrative skills as identified by the paper are: those not trained in the teaching profession, those trained but entering into full time teaching for the first time, those trained teachers but not experienced in teaching (1 – 4 years) and those already teaching but found teaching uninteresting. The skills on which the new teachers can be mentored includes: school records keeping, class(room) management, teaching effectiveness and efficiency, school community relations, school plant management and evaluation and assessment of students. Benefits of mentoring to old and new teachers were highlighted. Mentoring is one of the best reforms in the education system and a very cost effective programme which will make the teachers to be the best they could in the school system and in the teaching profession.

"Building differences at school. Studies of the trajectories of the Temporary Classroom of Linguistic Adaptation (TCLA) in Andalusia, of their teaching staff and its students" [CSO2013-43266-R] Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. ; This article examines Andalusian teachers' ideologies towards migrant students' bilingualism and, the way teachers perceive the home language maintenance and its use in the school context. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews to two types of teachers -specialist language and regular teachers- in Andalusia (Spain). Findings revealed that were slight differences in the ideologies of these two types of teachers. In general, teachers' beliefs towards bilingualism were relatively positive. In rhetoric, language teachers demonstrated a greater appreciation for the bilingualism of the students and viewed it as a challenge. Conversely, the regular teachers had a less positive orientation towards bilingualism, associating it with problems. Furthermore, teachers advocate assimilationist language ideologies that consider - Spanish-only- as an indispensable tool for academic achievement. Our results also highlight that participants did not seem to be aware of the importance of students' home language-as-a right and its use as a democratic condition in a multilingual society such as Spain. The results show a need for professional development for all teachers to move away from monolingualism to advocating for multilingualism to better reflect the realities of the classrooms. ; Educación y Psicología Social

The aim of the present study was to investigate teachers' views on the priorities of effective school management. The possible variability of teachers' views in relation to age and work experience was also investigated. For this purpose, research was carried out in Secondary Public and Private Education schools of Ioannina, the capital city and the largest in the Epirus Prefecture, North-West part of Greece. Over 300 questionnaires were distributed to 32 Secondary Education Schools and 165 completed questionnaires were collected (return rate 54.99%). Teachers were asked to indicate their views on the priorities which should be set for effective School Management. Teachers pointed as most important priorities team work and collaboration with the Principal and their pupils (56%) whereas as least selected priority (24.4%) they pointed their participation in helping pupils to get a job. Compared to Public Schools, teachers working in Private Schools gave increased priority in: pupils' performance, raising teachers' aspirations for their pupils, teachers' job satisfaction, team work, collaboration with the Principal, parental involvement-collaboration between teachers and parents and school environment. The results indicate a significant variability on teachers' age and work experience regarding their priorities for effective school management. This variability highlights the importance of focusing on teachers' attitudes for a successful implementation of effective human resources and school management.

Purpose– This article aims to report on a qualitative study that investigates the enculturation of a group of pre-service English language teachers over four years of a Bachelor of Education degree offered in a women ' s college in the United Arab Emirates.Design/methodology/approach– Bourdieu ' s "thinking tools" of field, habitus and capital provide the overarching theoretical framework and analytic tools to examine the processes of enculturation which impact on the student teachers as they participate in a program based on Western-oriented theories and practices. The study draws upon data gathered from focus group interviews with student teachers in the first and fourth years of the program to provide insights into their ways of thinking as future Emirati English language teachers. The article discusses the priorities that emerge as these student teachers validate, or otherwise, the theoretical principles and practices legitimated through the program.Findings– The findings suggest that influences bound by local, cultural and social forces contribute significantly to the student teachers ' perceived capacity to think and act as future Emirati English language teachers.Research limitations/implications– The study is limited to one site but, given the findings, similar investigations into processes of enculturation and the appropriation or resistance of essential aspects of English language teacher training could be undertaken.Originality/value– There is limited research into English language teacher education programs in the Arab world. This research has potential applications for English language teacher education programs where there is intent to effect educational reform.

In 2005, acting on advice received from the Scholarship Reference Group, the New Zealand government introduced re-designed New Zealand Qualifications Authority Scholarship Awards. One goal of these awards was to help motivate students to strive to develop and display excellence. Distribution was aimed at approximately 3 percent of students studying at Level 3 National Certificate of Educational Achievement with this proportion consistent with the level many consider to be 'gifted and talented' learners. This article identifies secondary school students' perceptions of those factors they perceive to have facilitated their success in New Zealand Qualifications Authority Scholarship. Results show that effective teachers of gifted students demonstrate personal and professional characteristics that facilitate high academic success.
