The INTENSSS PA project, funded by Horizon 2020, the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation of the European Union, aims to support the local authorities involved and their stakeholders to develop an innovative integrated sustainable energy planning concept through a participatory, interdisciplinary and multilevel process. By building individual and institutional capacity of the actors involved, using the Regional Living Lab approach, the concept will be applied in order to develop seven sustainable integrated energy plans. In this first article the project activities and the results achieved so far are preliminary described, anticipating a more extensive and detailed publication on the project planned for the December edition of UPLand – Journal of Urban Planning Landscape & Environmental Design.

This paper contributes to the emerging literature on the adoption of environmental innovation, by investigating the so far unexplored role of governmental demand in stimulating 'greener' production choices. Specifically, the role of innovative public procurement in driving the adoption and diffusion of sustainable manufacturing technologies is analysed. Results, based on firm-level data in the 28 Member States of the European Union, Switzerland and the USA, are obtained through non-parametric matching techniques. Those outline the crucial role of innovative public procurement in the uptake of environmental innovations. This confirms the relevance of such policy instrument in allowing countries to achieve a decarbonised and sustainable growth path which is compatible with competitiveness goals.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has discussed ways of regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by civil aircraft for almost 20 years. Over the past four years, a consensus has developed about a market-based mechanism in the form of a carbon offset system. This article describes the route to the agreement reached by ICAO's 39th Assembly, in order to contextualise the results and point out some of its limitations. It points to two main factors that contributed to the consensus: the role of the European Union, which sought to lead the negotiations, and the choice of a flexible and ultimately weak mechanism that received support from the international airlines.

This paper is meant to determine trends in changes in the organisation of fruit production at the beginning of the 21st century. It focuses on the determination of those trends as well as their circumstances. The analysis of changes in the organisation of fruit production was made using Grójec poviat as an example. The accession of Poland to the European Union resulted in the intensification of processes of specialisation and concentration in agriculture, due to which the area occupied by orchards started to grow systematically. With the growing area and the intensification of fruit crops, quantities of fruits produced also increased. Currently, Poland is one of the biggest fruit manufacturers in Europe, with Grójec poviat being the biggest producer in Poland.

Synthesis of porous SiO2 thin films in room temperature was carried out using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in an electron cyclotron resonance microwave reactor with a downstream configuration.The gas adsorption properties and the type of porosity of the SiO2 thin films were assessed by adsorption isotherms of toluene at room temperature.The method could also permit the tailoring synthesis of thin films when both composition and porosity can be simultaneously and independently controlled. The result shows that it is possible to control the microstructure of oxide thin films deposited by room temperature plasma enhanced chemical vapor depositon (PECVD) by scarificial polymeric organic layers. ; Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología MAT2001-2820 ; European Union ENV4-CT97-0633

When the economic allocation of resources in any system is not Pareto efficient, there exists possibility for the Pareto improvement. In this paper the means of attaining the Pareto efficiency in providing services of computed tomography is discussed and compared. The study aims at analysing the use of computed tomography for the purpose of providing healthcare services in the European Union and other countries by making comparisons of data collected by the State Health Care Accreditation Agency under the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania. Using the methods of benchmarking and synthesis, authors seek to determine the potential efficient uses of computed tomography and propose the possible solutions for achieving the Pareto efficiency.

This article focuses on the role of the energy factor in the formation of foreign policy of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The author conducted a brief analysis of the basic directions of Azerbaijan's oil and gas strategy, which play an important role for the energy security of the European Union. As noted in the article on the increase in competition between countries for influence and access to hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian region. ; Данная статья посвящена роли энергетического фактора в формировании внешней политики Азербайджанской Республики. Developers of gene therapy products (GTPs) must adhere to additional regulation beyond that of traditional small-molecule therapeutics, due to the unique mechanism-of-action of GTPs and the subsequent novel risks arisen. We have provided herein a summary of the regulatory structure under which GTPs fall in the United States, the European Union, and Japan, and a comprehensive overview of the regulatory guidance applicable to the developer of GTP. Understanding the regulatory requirements for seeking GTP market approval in these major jurisdictions is crucial for an effective and expedient path to market. The novel challenges facing GTP developers is highlighted by a case study of alipogene tiparvovec (Glybera).

The Arbitral Award of 29 June 2017 was issued in the context of a land and maritime territorial dispute which has for a long time undermined the relations between two Member States of the European Union and been a source of instability in the Balkan region. On the merits of the case, the award confirmed, on the basis of the agreement of the Parties, the applicability of uti possidetis in the Balkans, in a non-colonial context, and proposes an original analysis in relation to bays with several riparian states and in relation to freedoms of communication and navigation in the sea, in the present case in a zone of ' Slovenian junction to the high seas'.

Trans Adriatic Pipeline: a gas pipeline at the Centre of a social struggle and a movement in conflict to stop it. The Trans Adriatic Pipeline project, (Tap), concerns the construction of a gas pipeline that would transport natural gas from Azerbaijan to Italy. The project, supported by the Italian Government and the European Union, has been the subject of protests and opposition – developed into a social conflict ¬– by communities of Salento, that should accept the work. This paper describes the main controversial tracts concerning the project, the reactions of the local population, the importance of the sense of community, and the citizen's feeling of distrust and disappointment for the institutions
