The three essays of this dissertation apply game-theoretical, experimental and empirical methods to study the role of social media in the democratic process. The first essay develops a theory about the influence of political interest groups on voting behavior through communication on social media platforms. The model framework allows a theory-based discussion of two policy proposals aimed to counteract election manipulation by disinformation: a ban on microtargeting and the implementation of measures that raise source salience. The second essay studies the effects of these policy interventions in a large-scale laboratory experiment. The third essay employs panel data from a representative survey of Dutch households to examine the relationship between news consumption through social media and political polarization in a multi-party system.

In this concluding chapter, the book's editors stress the epochal status of the digital revolution and urge migration scholars to leverage innovative information and communication technology for enhancing their research designs. New technological options may contribute significantly to improving the viability and quality of researcher-defined data collections, yet their full potential comes to bear with regard to massive datasets generated by third parties, such as digital trace data. Since the center of gravity of social studies is predicted to shift increasingly towards the repurposing of such accrued data, migration researchers are advised to seek close cooperation with data scientists. In addition to methodological pluralism and interdisciplinary collaboration, the editors emphasize the need for ethical safeguards and accountability as major challenges this ongoing transformation entails.

This paper explores some aspects of the scientific study of creativity by focusing on intentionalattempts to create instances of linguistic humour. We argue that this sort of creativity canbe accounted for within an influential cognitive approach but that said framework is not arecipe for producing novel instances of humour and may even preclude them. We start byidentifying three great puzzles that arise when trying to pin down the core traits of creativity,and some of the ways taken by Cognitive Studies in this quest. We then consider what we call'creative humour', which exhibits the core features of the aforesaid creativity. We then explorehow a key cognitive approach to human communication can account for creative humour.We end by drawing lessons and highlighting limitations to cognitive approaches to creativity.

Scientific conference for young teachers and masters who study in the specialty 291 International Relations, Public Communications and Regional Studies, with the participation of the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Sociology V. V. Glebov, Head of the Department of International Relations O. I. Brusylovska, lectors and guests of the University, took place on May 18, 2021 at the FIRPS ONU named after I. I. Mechnikov. Among the issues considered at the conference were: the analysis of the theory of international relations (Belinska D., Burganova V., Gordienko S., Musienko A., Pogrebnyak M., Shevchenko Y.), foreign policy of the states (Houphouet L., Navasardyan D., Novatska O., Palyonova G., Polyakova E., Zazalitinova V.), systemic transformation of post-communist and post-colonial countries (Prokhorova V., Elkhair A.).

This contribution is interested in the interactional management of mobile phone use in face-to-face encounters. Early observational studies of mobile phone use have emphasized the tension between the participants' presence in "public" spaces and their "private" activities on mobile phones. This assumed dichotomy and possible conflict between different communication involvements will be revisited by using a conversation analytic approach to mobile phone use in video recorded everyday encounters among friends and family members. Three examples of self-initiated text messaging or calling will illustrate how and on which sequential (or other interactional) grounds participants frame their mobile phone use for co-present others. More specifically, the analysis will discuss how participants format and respond to announcement sequences or their absence, and how they can orient to the phone users' accountability.

This paper studies the role of preopening periods in liquidity formation and welfare in financial markets. Because no transaction occurs during these preopening periods, their economic significance could be questioned. We model a market where costly participation and asymmetric information prevent latent liquidity from being expressed. At equilibrium, risk‐averse insiders use preopening periods to better coordinate supply and demand of liquidity by communicating liquidity needs, thus improving welfare. Partial or full communication of private signals by the insider with the asset at preopening periods does not always enhance liquidity formation, but improves welfare through reducing adverse selection risk faced by the outsider, and increasing the likelihood of her entry. Our findings have implications for portfolio management and the design of financial markets.

Abstract The article reflects the research practices of the research group Consumption and Digital Cultures (Consumo e Culturas Digitais, Brazil) in view of Daniel Miller's theoretical legacy regarding consumption and material culture in interface with studies in the field of communication and in particular of digital cultures. Through the critical appraisal of four theses and six dissertations, it demonstrates how we have been working with digital anthropology through the interlacement of different field researches that animate and pose challenges to empirical research. Our affiliation with Miller's ethnographic lineage makes us pursue the argument that it is possible to understand the everyday consumption practices of the internet, social media and mobile devices as cultural genres elaborated in the lived experience and in the particular contexts in which digital media are used.

This paper aims to describe the relationship of Literary Works (novels) to nature. Literary studies that emphasize the relationship of literature with nature entered into the realm of literary ecology and specifically called Literary Ecocritics. In the presentation of this paper it leads to a descriptive description as a characteristic of qualitative research. The scientific method applied in this study is the discourse approach that exists in eco-criticism. In the novel Kubah di Atas Pasir by Zhainal Fanani, nature is not only used as a setting of place and atmosphere in literary works but also an aspect that helps build the story and aesthetics of a literary work. In this novel, nature is used as a medium of communication by humans in their lives.Keywords: Nature, eco-criticism, media, and literature

What to Remember When Asking About Difficult Issues? Some Remarks on the Methodology of Sensitive Research
Dealing with sensitive topics in social science research has a distinct and well established tradition, and post-memory studies may fall into this category as well. The paper focuses on practical issues connected to qualitative interviewing on sensitive topics. In detail, it bridges the gap between psychological literature and practice, primarily counselling psychology, and scholarship on sensitive topics present in many areas of sociology. The main problems that a researcher may face while conducting interviews on sensitive issues lay in or are connected to the structure of the interview, the resistance of the informant as well as the authenticity and personal communication competences. Attention is devoted to ethical issues present in this category of research.

Musicologist and theoretician of art Bojana Radovanović published a monograph dedicated to the problem of experimental voice in contemporary theory and practice, in 2018. Radovanović's book is based on her Master's Thesis (further broadened and developed), defended at the Faculty of Media and Communication under the mentorship of Dr. Miško Šuvaković. Focus of the study is on the performance aspects and the voice itself and relies on the work focused on performance, the performative body and the political agency of art, produced in recent years. As for the methodology, the study is transdicisplinary in its character, since the main idea of thinking about experimental voice, its agency and its theoretical understanding 'flows' between the disciplines of musicology, performance studies, the theory of arts, psychology, philosophy.

The importance of Big Data in the current business and commercial context is unquestionable, however few studies have been done on how this resource can influence the strategic development of brand communication campaigns. In this article we propose to make a first approach to this object of study. We emphasize that in this case the methodology developed is more important than the valued sample, since it represents an advance to deepen this area of study. In order to carry out the research, an extensive bibliographic and hemerographic study on the concept of Big Data and its applications has been carried out. From that point we have been able to develop a field study and identify success stories that have given us references of how Big Data works in this context.

The article explores the effort by economists and economic journalists in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s to translate economic knowledge to the political language of reform communism. Czechoslovak economists aimed to cultivate public understanding of economic issues and to disseminate economic knowledge among the nonacademic public, not only through politically engaged writing in the journal Ekonomická revue, but also through research on management to change managers' behavior, habits, and competencies. In this important communication with nonacademic recipients, experts translated their economic knowledge to the specific managerial language of advice and personal self-development. A significant part of management studies literature was concerned with capitalist economies, especially capitalist managerial praxis. It thus contributed to the social academic and journalistic genre of the 1960s that focused on exploring capitalism and the West.

The paper provides an overview of the international academic conference Language & Cultural Interaction held on May 28–30 in Chelyabinsk. This landmark event for the linguistics brought together scientists not only from Russia and China, but also from the neighboring and other countries. Since the reports of eminent scientists deserved the attention of all participants, the conference program included four plenary sessions. The conference resulted in a signed memorandum of understanding concerning the development of cooperation between the Institute of Linguistics and International Communications of the South Ural State Research University, SUSU, and the Tianjin Foreign Studies University (China), including sharing experiences in the current areas of modern linguistics, cultural linguistics, pedagogical anthropology and methods of teaching foreign languages in order to develop regional and international scientific cooperation.

AbstractIndividuals often experience incidental device-delivered haptic feedback (e.g., vibrational alerts accompanying messages on mobile phones and wearables), yet almost no research has examined the psychological and behavioral implications of technology-mediated touch on consumers. Drawing from theories in social psychology and computer science, we explore how device-delivered haptic feedback may have the capability to augment consumer responses to certain consumer-directed communications. Across four studies, we find that haptic alerts accompanying messages can improve consumer performance on related tasks and demonstrate that this effect is driven by an increased sense of social presence in what can otherwise feel like an impersonal technological exchange. These findings provide applied value for mobile marketers and gadget designers, and carry important implications for consumer compliance in health and fitness domains.
