"Presents a blueprint for transforming East Asian cities to global engines of green growth by choosing energy efficient solutions for their infrastructure needs, with case studies in Cebu City (the Philippines), Da Nang (Vietnam), and Surabaya (Indonesia) illustrating the use of sustainable urban energy and emissions planning (SUEEP)"--
Cities in sub-Saharan Africa are currently confronted with a multitude, and hitherto unexperienced, magnitude of transformative phenomena such as rising inequality, exclusion, poverty and increased residency in informal settlements. These stressors are posing challenges to cities in terms of housing, infrastructure and provision of basic services as well as climate change adaptation. Despite the high dynamics and novel characteristics of city transformation, this urban transition seems to take place rather &lsquo ; quietly&rsquo ; and has, so far, obviously hardly been understood or appreciated by researchers and governments. Subsequently, the multifaceted and extremely challenging problems associated with the process of urbanisation cannot be adequately addressed. Green infrastructure (GI) is currently emerging as a concept for cost-effective urban sustainability and livelihood security. Preservation and provision of accessible urban green spaces is increasingly recognised as an essential part of the liveability of cities. Extensive literature review revealed that the systematic integration of GI concepts in urban planning is seen by an increasing number of researchers as an essential approach to tackle major current and future challenges. Based on the literature review, we suggest that broadening the concept of urban GI by linking it to governance and rights-based conceptualisations will have the potential to unlock more resourceful paths for sustainable, green, and inclusive urban development of cities in Southern and Eastern Africa.
This article empirically examines the time dependence of audit quality and audit fee effects resulting from the presence of audit firm alumni (AFA) on audit committees (ACs) in the German setting. Following the European Union's audit reform in 2014, the subject of this study is of particular importance, as European regulators have strengthened the position of ACs, while simultaneously restricting the presence of AFA on ACs. We find that the presence of AFA who have recently left their former employer on ACs is associated with higher audit quality, while we fail to find a significant effect on audit quality with regard to AFA who have left audit firms a longer period of time ago. In addition, the presence of AFA on ACs does not seem to affect audit fees. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate time-dependent AFA effects related to ACs.

Examines the growth in number of cities with 8 million or more inhabitants, their role in the global economy, and problems of planning, urban services, water supply, and poverty.
Economic restructuring and demographic change have in recent years placed much strain on urban areas with the effects falling disproportionately on neighbourhoods that were previously underpinned by industry and manufacturing. This has presented policy makers and city planners with a binary choice: to resist change and stagnate or to change and attempt to keep up with the pace of global demand. This edited book tells the story of how urban transformation impacts on people's lives and everyday interactions-to question where and to whom benefit accrues from these changes. Urban Transformations offers insight into both risk and reward as local communities and public authorities creatively address the challenge of building vital and sustainable urban environments. The authors in this edited collection argue that understanding the specifics of community, space and place is crucial to delivering insights into how, where, when, why and for whom urban areas might successfully transform. The chapters investigate urban change using a range of approaches, and case studies from the four corners of the globe - from the United States to Iran; from the United Kingdom to Canada. The varying scales at which governance or regeneration initiatives operate, the nature and composition of urban communities, and the local or global interests of different private sector actors all raise questions for urban policy and practice. It is important to not only consider the drivers of regeneration, but its beneficiaries need to be identified.
Abstract: Determinants of the Quality of Local Government Audit Opinions. This study intends to examine non-compliance with regulations and weaknesses of the internal control system to the quality of local government audit opinions. The method used is a binary logistic regression test on government auditors in 39 districts/cities in East Java Province. This study finds that the level of materiality is the main cause of the quality of audit opinion. Increasing the auditor's findings when compared with the previous year is not necessarily material. The State Financial Examination Standard also states that the determination of materiality is influenced by the extent of the examination, time, nature, and outcome evaluation.
In the past decades, international port cities have been strongly affected by global transformation processes, dramatically altering life and work around the ports, the built environment and public imagery of urban waterfronts. Based on recent theories of city-port development, the ethnographic studies in this volume focus on local stakeholders' perceptions and strategies in port cities in Europe and Latin America. This book covers a wide variety of urban fields, from traditional dockland communities, inland waterway sailors and new forms of migration and exile, to active agents of urban transformation.
