Unlike the classical Middle East, the most popular television platform in the Maghreb is terrestrial, as a rule, state-owned channels, therefore, in the conditions of civil unrest, new media have become the only means of obtaining information for the general population. The role of social media in protest actions has become the subject of a broad discussion by experts.
Von Technik und Ästhetik zu sprechen, heißt, sich bereits begrifflich auf ein Feld einzulassen, das mindestens zwei divergente Perspektiven gemeinsam denkt. Dabei haben das Technische wie das Ästhetische die Bedeutung einer Interdependenz aufzuweisen: Das Technische konstituiert einerseits Funktionen, Formen und Gebrauchsaspekte - ästhetische Zustände evozieren andererseits zeichenhafte Realisierungen, phantasmatische Urteile und wahrnehmungsvermittelte Phänomene des Erscheinens. Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes zeigen, wie bei der Konfrontation von Technik und Ästhetik eine Art Verkopplung und intrinsische Dynamik qua techno-ästhetischer Evokation entstehen kann.
In this paper the author shares some of the findings, observations, and stimulating insights from colleagues and students gathered during visits to various parts of the world.The academic study of religion must now encompass more than it has done until now the effects of modern media and communications technologies, global consumption patterns, cultural mobility, and changing geo-political configurations. Scholars of religion are are being outpaced by these developments, whether because of the limitations of vision, or the shortsightedness of theoretical lenses.' The argument is that sites such as art, the media, Internet, outer space, diasporas, global culture, nature, and the public space deserve critical attention - not just for reasons of content, but because these new or neglected sites offer a potential challenge to our categories and concepts. Focus has to be shifted increasingly from bounded local cultures to transnational cultural flows and the significance of place has to be reexamined. This paper has suggests a number of pathways that are deserving of more exploration by scholars of religion. What we choose to include or exclude from our gaze affects the nature of our discourse(s) through and through. The whole business of "seeing" is integral to both the academic enterprise as well as the political economy of the academic study of religion. This paper highlights some of the exciting new areas that face us as students of religious ideas and phenomena, and point to their methodological implications.
This report is part of the sixth work package of RESPOND ("Multilevel governance of mass migration in Europe and beyond") and focuses on the question of Europeanisation. The main goal of this report is to examine how conflicting elite discourses of Europeanisation have emerged in the context of increasing migration in the period 2011-2019 in Greece. It aims to capture conflicting Europeanisation in the domestic context; to assess the impact of post-2011 migration on political claim-making about Europe; to develop a perspective on the role of the media in domestic audience-making and to understand how the above situations impact on stakeholders. It does so through a research methodology that combined diverse methods and data from three sources: political speeches, newspaper articles related to the speeches and a survey addressed to the project's meso-level stakeholders.
Highly educated citizens vote at much lower rates than less educated citizens in some countries. By contrast, electoral participation exhibits no such bias in other countries as diverse as Spain, Denmark, and South Korea. This book describes the levels of unequal participation in thirty-six countries worldwide, examines possible causes of this phenomenon, and discusses its consequences. Aina Gallego illustrates how electoral procedures, party and media systems, unionization, and income inequality impact unequal participation through an original combination of cross-national survey data and survey experiments

Digital space has provided an important platform for women by enabling them to defy religious and patriarchal values while rendering their demands more visible in the public sphere. By analyzing the stories of 3349 murdered women, consulting 57 activist-published materials, studying 37 protest-focused videos, and using digital ethnography, this article explores Turkish women's struggles against femicide. I propose the emancipatory and democratizing counterpublics as an analytical concept to demonstrate how women challenge epistemic injustice and male violence. To this end, I investigate the struggles of women by studying their use of digital space as a means of breaking the silence on femicide, creating data, disseminating knowledge, and seeking justice. This article highlights the essential role of new media technologies in empowering vulnerable groups through the generation of new forms of knowledge, the formation of collective memory, and the elimination of epistemic injustice in opposition to the ruling authorities. The present study contributes to our knowledge of the sociology of epistemic injustice by demonstrating how digital space plays a limited but critical role in the efforts of activists living under authoritarian regimes to defend their fundamental rights to survive and prevent femicide, which has a devastating impact on the lives of millions of women.
In recent years, new forms of public self-documentation have become popular on social media platforms and especially through so-called influencers, forming their own media cultural microcosm. Even though YouTube has become emblematic of this cultural technique, media self-documentations are also formative for other services such as Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat. Robert Dörre understands the emergence of these self-designs as an aesthetic practice and traces the media-historical shifts that public self-documentation has experienced on the Internet. In order to make these specific aesthetics, rituals, motifs, and economies accessible to media cultural studies, the work approaches the phenomenon from five perspectives: The reception as authentic self, the self as part of social media, the self as brand, the serial self, and the self as amateur and artist.

Die Beiträge befassen sich u.a. mit Popliteratur und Musikvideos, den Beatles und Hip-Hop, The Terminator und The Wrestler, Monty Python und Switch. Dabei thematisieren sie auch bislang unberücksichtigte Phänomene wie posthumanistische und Körper-Diskurse, Darstellungen des Alter(n)s und religiöse Eschatologie. Abstract This dissertation examines the political significance of the image of the Japanese Empress Teimei (1884-1951) with a focus on issues of gender and class. During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media. Through the investigation of various discursive forms of visual materials featuring Empress Teimei, this dissertation aims to reveal the political significance of Teimei as a role model of middle-class and aristocratic femininity. To this end, this dissertation examines Empress Teimei's appearance in formal portraiture, representations of Teimei in popular media, and emulations of the Empress by upper class women, as well as tracing changes in her image through time as related to political circumstances and her personal biography. As a public figure, Empress Teimei held great sway over women's decorum in the first three decades of the twentieth century; she was the first Empress to establish monogamous modern family relations, and was the first modern Empress to mother the successive Emperor. Despite her relevance to the narrative of Japanese imperial history, very few publications, particularly in English, have fully discussed the historical importance of the Empress. Although private military and security companies (PMSCs) are gaining increasing importance, they still suffer from an image problem. In the media, they are frequently referred to as 'mercenaries' or 'dogs of war'. PMSCs are therefore interested in presenting themselves as legitimate and acceptable contract parties. Based on a discourse analysis of the homepages of select PMSCs and the industry association International Stability Operations Association (ISOA), and drawing on the framing literature, we examine one way in which companies respond to such negative labels. We show not only that PMSCs provide supplemental logistics or security for the staff of humanitarian organisations confronted with complex emergencies and ever-more dangerous missions, but also that these companies appropriate the humanitarian frame discursively, emphasising those elements that fit their interests and needs. To present themselves as 'new humanitarians', PMSCs employ primarily two kinds of strategies: naming and forging alliances with more traditional humanitarian actors. Their growing involvement in this field may not be without consequences and may contribute to the blurring of lines between military and civilian missions.
Die Geste wurde von der römischen Rhetorik über die Physiognomik bis hin zu den Gesture Studies vordergründig als eine funktionale körperliche Stütze für sprachliche Kommunikation oder als sinnliche Spur geistiger Zustände aufgefasst. Gesten begleiten unsere Diskurse und Gemütslagen und machen diese wahrnehmbar. Über diesen traditionell gültigen Standpunkt hinaus verlagert Luca Viglialoro den Fokus auf den somatisch-medialen Kunstcharakter der Geste, um diese als prozesshafte Technik (ars) für die Modellierung der aísthesis zu konturieren. Dafür werden die komplexen Relationen zwischen Gesten und Kunstreflexionen am Beispiel von medial unterschiedlichen Konfigurationen (von der Schrift und der Zeichnung bis zur Fotografie und Installationskunst) analysiert.
