Diese politikwissenschaftliche Einführung in Geschichte und Aufgabenfelder der UNO erscheint anlässlich ihres 60-jährigen Bestehens. Jeder aktuelle Bezug wie die Ambitionen Deutschlands auf einen Sitz im Sicherheitsrat fehlt. Trotz des einführenden Charakters verzichtet der Autor nicht auf eine kritische Analyse. So stellt er die Aktivitäten der Weltorganisation bei der Bekämpfung von Konflikten positiv heraus: Suezkonflikt 1956, Kongo 1960, Zypern 1964. Zunehmend wurde die UNO wichtig als Instrument für die Artikulation von Interessen der 3. Welt. Ihre Grenzen zeigen sich heute bei der Bekämpfung von Konflikten, ausgelöst durch Terrorismus, der nicht von einzelnen Staaten ausgeht, und bei der Durchsetzung gesellschaftlicher Ansprüche, wie die der Menschenrechte und der Sicherheit gegenüber staatlicher Gewalt.
