Objective. Critics of schools governed by fundamentalist religions are concerned that these schools will not socialize students to the attitudes & values appropriate for citizens of a pluralistic liberal democracy. Among these values are support for democratic norms, political tolerance, moral reasoning & autonomy, duty to community, & acceptance of nontraditional lifestyles. This article examines the empirical basis for the critics' concerns. Methods. Using difference-of-means tests & multivariate regression, we compare students in the 10th & 12th grades attending regular public & fundamentalist Christian schools. Results. The 10th-grade comparisons of the two sets of students confirm many of the expectations of critics of fundamentalist schools. By the 12th grade, however, the students in fundamentalist schools have surpassed students in regular public schools on many of the desired attitudes & values, but the fundamentalist school students remain less accepting of nontraditional lifestyles. Conclusion. For the most part, fundamentalist Christian high schools do as well or better than regular public schools in socializing their students to the values appropriate to citizenship in liberal democracies. 5 Tables, 1 Appendix, 30 References. Objective. To evaluate whether Catholic high school attendance, relative to public high school attendance, affects the quality of four-year college that students attend. Methods. We use quantile regression, which allows the relationship between Catholic high school attendance & college quality to vary along the conditional college quality distribution. Results. We find the relationship between Catholic high school attendance & college quality is larger & more significant at the top half of the conditional college quality distribution than at the bottom half. Conclusions. An understanding of the potential benefits of Catholic schooling is essential to an informed debate about school-choice programs such as educational vouchers. One potential benefit associated with Catholic schooling is matriculation at more selective colleges & universities. We find some evidence that such a benefit exists. 3 Tables, 50 References. ; The crisis of the politics is the symptom of the ontological loss of the political reason itself. The ideological dominant character of the hegemonic power has falsified and sacrificed our own desire of emancipation in the name of the Order. The limits of the politics have been lost, it has been not only sacrificed the emancipating reason itself but also the weakest human being's organic life. In order to reveal the false desire and recuperate the originating sense of the politics, the role of the imaginary distinguishing between the Real and reality through the symbolic that politics has determined is crucial. And it is in this context that Ranciere's political-emancipatory pedagogy, through Jacotot's example, shows how to teach to search the relations between different significants that constitute willing individuals is more emancipatory than obedience to symbolic representation of order.

A study of fourteen colleges finds that community colleges require certain kinds of social know-how -- skills & knowledge less available to disadvantaged students. They present seven obstacles: (1) bureaucratic hurdles, (2) confusing choices, (3) student-initiated guidance, (4) limited counselor availability, (5) poor advice from staff, (6) delayed detection of costly mistakes, & (7) poor handling of conflicting demands. However, we find that a very different kind of college -- the private occupational college -- takes steps to structure out the need for this social know-how & address the needs of disadvantaged students. We speculate about possible policy implications. 20 References. [Copyright 2003 Sage Publications, Inc.]
