Boston Gazette content in the six years prior to the Declaration of Independence revealed the slavery issue was used to unite patriot fervor under a proslavery position. Specifically, the Gazette misguided readers regarding the 1772 decision in which the American slave James Somerset was freed by a British court, chose not to reflect the debate on slavery under way in other colonial newspapers, selected items that promoted Southern patriarchy, and appropriated the word "slavery" as a metaphor representing colonial America vis-à-vis Great Britain. The author concludes such use was deliberate as part of the propagandistic mission of the Gazette.

Since the Second World War, renewable natural raw materials, including cotton, jute, wool, sisal and rubber, have lost international markets to synthetic substitutes. In the competition between natural law materials and synthetic products, relatively clean products of the South have lost market shares to relatively dirty products of the North. The author examines the competition between jute and polypropylene, jute's main synthetic substitute. After tracing the competition between jute and polypropylene in the past three decades, he looks at the available evidence on the environmental impacts of these two products and discusses their economic costs. The ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) will be part of a three-phase process that begins with the annual ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM). The ASEAN states have taken a central role in an East Asian security regime. The ARF will consist of the ASEAN members, their "Dialogue Partners" (Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the USA) in Post Ministerial Conference (PMC), and foreign ministers from China, Russia, Vietnam, Laos, and Papua New Guinea. The author examines the ARF as a consultative process to further the benefits of constructive engagement. (DÜI-Sen)

The example of the Chumbivilcas district in the Cuzco region illustrates the technological conditions of the competition between locally produced and imported wheat.

SummaryData on grandparental surnames were obtained from children in 45 Italo-Albanesi villages in nine provinces of southern Italy and Sicily. Concordance of surnames (isonymy) and inbreeding by village were estimated for each province and on the total sample. Total mean isonymy is 0·0251. The weighted mean inbreeding coefficient, and its random and non-random components are 0·0063, 0·0024 and 0·0039, respectively. Isonymy values are similar to those of rural Italian villages except that Alpine and some Appennine villages appear to be more isolated and inbred.

Andrzej Stasiuk (b. 1960) is a poet and prose writer from the Beskid Niski region of southern Poland. The Walls of Hebron (Mury Hebronu) was commissioned by the Solidarity organisation Wolność i Pokój shortly after Andrzej Stasiuk's release from 19 months' imprisonment in 1984. He wrote the book in three weeks, but Solidarity rejected it for fear that its 'realism' might scandalise its supporters. The work was finally published in Poland in 1992 by Wydawnictwo Gyodnych Duchów and evoked a confused reaction among readers accustomed to associating imprisonment with myths of valour and patriotic sacrifice.

The expansion of capitalist agriculture and the augmented incidence of migration throughout the Third World in recent decades have transformed the peasantry and made it reliant on wage work in labour markets tied to the world economy as never before. The dependence on off-farm income in Latin America is especially significant among smallholder farm families who derive the majority of household income from off-farm sources. Employing data on migration among rural farm households in Southern Honduras, the article examines the processes related to the unprecedented proletarianisation that has occurred since 1950

Growth curves were derived for captive known-age dingoes, Canis familiaris dingo, and their crosses
with similarly sized domestic dogs, C. f. familiaris. Regular body measurements including weight and
dried eye-lens weights were used. Age calibration curves and confidence limits were then produced to
enable age estimation of animals of unknown birth date. Head length was the better predictor of age
up to about 120 days, and eye-lens weight to about 500 days. The only difference in growth patterns
in dingoes and crossbreeds from central and southern Australia was between sexes.

This paper investigates the growth in financial participation in the UK. Using a large-scale survey, the hypothesis is tested that different company types are associated with different forms of financial participation. In particular, empirical evidence supports the view that certain types of firms are likely to engage in those schemes that offer tax concessions. These firms are clearly associated with large, public limited companies, located in the South-East of England who tend to be capital-intensive, non-union and otherwise non-participative. Financial participation in Britain appears to be cosmetic and opportunistic with little relation to genuine participation.

The index of socioeconomic (SE) & cultural diversity among the US states formulated by John L. Sullivan for 1960 (see SA 24:1/76H7468) is recreated for 1980. Comparisons are made between the diversity indices for the 2 time periods & correlations are made between the diversity index, region, & political culture. Policy consequences of the updated measure of state diversity are assessed with 2-path analyses of a simple model. Although the 11 southern states have become more like the northern states, significant differences are found, mainly because of cultural rather than SE factors. Discussed are the strengths & weaknesses of the diversity index, measures of regionalism, & measure of political culture for comparative state policy research. 3 Tables. We use Sato's factor-augmenting technical progress approach to calculate rates of growth of capital efficiency, labour efficiency, and efficiency-based total factor productivity growth in manufacturing by state. Capital efficiency gains, but not labour efficiency gains, have accompanied the rapid output growth of southern and western states. Regression analysis indicates that variables measuring scale effects, education, urbanisation, capital intensity, and research and development activity are directly associated with productivity and/or input-efficiency growth and that variables measuring regulation, interest-group effects, and unionisation effects are inversely associated.

Deeply rooted historical patterns allow us to make a correlation between imprisonment and unemployment and the marginalization of blacks. This paper examines the interrelationships among criminal activity, punishment, and cycles of the economic system based on the influence of political and economic forces on forming penal policies. The penal system is viewed as a device by which labor market fluctuations can be regulated. We examine differences between blacks and whites and between the North and the South to arrive at this paper's thesis: that race provides the link among economic cycles, employment, and crime.

Consumer subsidies have been playing an increasing role in
Pakistan since Independence. Largely as left-over economic controls of
World War II, a number of sophisticated instruments! have been applied
with different objectives at different times, surprisingly similar to
those applied in Europe. It is interesting to see how South Asian
countries, with their common colonial heritage of food administration
and agricultural market and price regulations, developed different
approaches after Independence, and to analyse the extent to which these
can be explained by their different resource endowments and political
ambitions and objectives.

A SERIES OF PROPOSALS ARE CITED, EDUCATIONAL-CULTURAL EXCHANGES AMONG ASIAN NATIONS (AND OTHERS) ARE PROPOSED -- PARTICULARLY IN THE PACIFIC BASIN. IMPROVEMENTS IN SINO-JAPANESE RELATIONS ARE NOTED AS BEING ESSENTIAL. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE TO IMPROVE EXCHANGES BETWEEN THE INDUSTRIAL NORTH NORTH AND DEVELOPING SOUTH.
