How do people find answers to questions they encounter in everyday life? While extensive research has examined how people go about finding answers to questions online, there has been little work investigating the issue from a more holistic, in situ perspective that covers the various devices, resources, and contextual factors that influence everyday question-asking experiences. To address this, we developed a text-messaging-based data-collection framework. This paper details our approach including reflections on both the benefits and challenges of the methodology for researchers seeking to apply similar approaches to social science research. In doing so, we demonstrate how our methodology helps establish a contextually rich understanding of information-seeking processes. We also demonstrate our approach to analyzing data from a small but diverse group of adults across the United States about their everyday question-asking experiences.

The goal of the present study is to understand how preadolescents' perceptions of their parents' mobile device distraction ("technoference") are related to their global assessment of family satisfaction. Building on existing research, a model is established that investigates this association through three mediators: parent–child conflict; companionship; and perceived emotional support. Data from a cross-sectional survey ( n = 742, 9–13 years, 50.9% girls, mean age =10.85, standard deviation = 0.73) supported most of the associations specified in our model. First, our findings demonstrate that preadolescents who perceived higher amounts of parent technoference also rated the relationship with their parents significantly higher in conflict, and lower in terms of perceived companionship. Moreover, maternal mobile device distraction was significantly associated with less emotional support. All but one of the indirect associations were found to be statistically significant, thus revealing a number of pathways through which technoference is related to preadolescents' assessments of family satisfaction.

In Canada, there is a relatively strong tradition of activist scholarship in media and communication studies. However, very little research has been undertaken on how working in the university may contextualize the ways in which academic workers participate in activist media projects. Focusing on three such projects – Media Democracy Day, Open Media, and NewsWatch Canada – this article draws upon elements of political economy and Bourdieu's field theory to consider how the different characters of the academic and activist fields work to enable and constrain the abilities of faculty to engage with them.

The use of cellphones in conversations is ubiquitous. Although the overarching view of the social effects of cellphones in conversations appears to be negative, some research has also reported positive outcomes. The Cellphone Relevance Hypothesis predicts that effects of cellphone use on conversational satisfaction depend on the function of cellphones within a conversation. When a conversation partner integrates cellphone use into the conversation (integral use), conversational satisfaction is predicted to be higher than when the cellphone is used for a purpose unrelated to the conversation (incidental use). Two vignette studies provide support for the Cellphone Relevance Hypothesis and specify boundary conditions of the cellphone effect based on the involvement of respondents.

Cognitive biases such as default effects impact on user preferences for a broad range of different choices. This paper investigates these default effects among adolescents configuring apps that either satisfy relatedness or enhance autonomy by protecting privacy. Relatedness and privacy are two innate needs that adolescents can satisfy with the use of smartphone apps. This study argues that adolescents' choice of features supporting either privacy protection or social relatedness is a consequence of default effects, so that adolescents adhere to preselected defaults. We test this assumption in an experimental survey design including four app configuration tasks with N = 280 German adolescents aged 11 to 20 years. The study finds support for default effects for privacy as well as social relatedness. Effects for further variables, particularly age are discussed.

Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) play a pivotal role in combating HIV/AIDS. Yet research on the social construction of HIV/AIDS has investigated the discourse of the government, media, and the public but not NGOs. Drawing on the technology affordance framework, this study examines NGOs' discourse on social media and websites in China to understand how they communicate HIV/AIDS issues. Results of semantic network analysis reveal overlapping themes about HIV/AIDS across social media and websites, including promoting public policy, public education, and social support. Additionally, NGOs leverage social media to mobilize various institutional and community health care resources and highlight their engagement with the government. This study underscores the pivotal role of NGOs in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and destigmatization. It also advances the technology affordance literature by shedding light on the convergent yet distinct affordances of different digital media for strategic health communication and the constraints of the sociopolitical context on organizations' communicative practices.

Mobilities has become an important framework to understand and analyze contemporary social, spatial, economic and political practices. Especially as mobile media become seamlessly integrated into transportation networks, navigating urban spaces, and connecting with social networks while on the move, researchers need new approaches and methods to bring together mobilities with mobile communication and locative media. Mobile communication scholars have focused on cell phones, often ignoring broader connections to urban spaces, geography, and locational media. As a result, they emphasized virtual mobility and personalized communication as a way of disconnecting from place, location and publics. The growing pervasiveness of location-aware technology urges us to rethink the intersection among location, mobile technologies and mobility. Few studies have addressed the many transformations taking place in mobile sociality and in urban spatial processes through the appropriation of these technologies.

Jezik je sistem koji omogućava ljudima komunikaciju. U namjeri da potiče razmjenu informacija među pojedincima, jezik ima dvostruku funkciju – komunikaciju među ljudima i simbolizaciju ideje znakom. Naša civilizacija je proizvod jezika, usmenog i pisanog govora. Pojava slikovnih medija, poput fotografije, kina, televizije, videa ili stripa, riskira prevrtanje krhke ravnoteže uspostavljene verbalizacijom između instinktivnog i racionalnog. Slika izaziva, ali ništa ne produbljuje. Izgovorena riječ strukturira iskustvo, omogućava subjektu da se distancira od njega kako bi ga integrirao, probavio i stekao. Govor, odnosno artikulirani izraz misli riječima, glavni je element jezika. Jezik je individualiziran, utjelovljen, stavljen u danu situaciju. Donekle je izgubljena iz vida bitna civilizacijska uloga govora kada je počeo puhati vjetar masovne tehnologije. Sa slikama koje definiraju novi jezik, tehnike su dale nova sredstva. Napori medijskih stručnjaka stoga su mnogo više fokusirani na istraživanje tehničkih aspekata i novih mogućnosti koje nudi tehnologija, nego na artikulaciju pratećeg diskursa. Već spomenuta McLuhanova izreka "Medij je poruka" potisnula je važnost govora. Fenomen je, osim toga, univerzalan: Strogost artikulacije verbalnog diskursa posvuda opada.
