Two theoretical perspectives on the connection between religion and politics are applied to Great Britain. Data from the 1991 and 1992 waves of the British Household Panel Study, used to conduct multinomial logistic regression analysis, dispute the general consensus that religion has weak or no effects on the voting decisions of British citizens. Religious belonging, behaviour and belief, as well as the religious context of households, continue to influence British voting behaviour. Interaction effects among religious variables and between religious variables and class also operate to influence vote choice. Areas for further research into the religious bases of British electoral behaviour are suggested. (British Journal of Political Science / FUB)

The journalist and politician Edward Baines (1800–90) succeeded his father as editor of the Leeds Mercury and as MP for Leeds. From a dissenting family, he was a social reformer but passionately believed that the state should not interfere in matters such as working hours and education. In this 1835 work, he sees the cotton industry as an exemplar of the unity of 'the manufactory, the laboratory, and the study of the natural philosopher', in making practical use of creative ideas and scientific discoveries. He surveys cotton manufacture from its origins to its 'second birth' in England, and focuses on the current state of machinery, trade and working conditions in all aspects of the business, and its outputs, including cloth, lace, stockings and cotton wool. This comprehensive work was important for its detailed analysis of a vital commercial activity, and remains so today for the historical information it contains

In light of increases in GB over the past decades in legislative activity & controversy concerning homosexual rights & practices, explored here is public opinion on these issues, focusing on the influence of party identification. Analysis of data from the 1987-1990 British Social Attitudes Surveys suggests that although party identification exerts an independent & statistically significant effect on attitudes toward homosexuals, these effects are both secondary & variable. Other equally, if not more salient, determinants include: gender, education, age, occupation, & type of homosexual relationship; of these, both age & education stand out as having the strongest & most consistent effect; antihomosexual views are most prevalent among older individuals & the lesser educated. 4 Tables, 27 References.
