We analyze the scope of Axel Honneth's theory of recognition as a critical theory of contemporary capitalist society. Towards that end, we show how the theory of recognition articulates with the immanent critique of society, and how Honneth attempts to bridge the gaps in the program of the first Frankfurt School. Next, it is shown that the moment of "intramundane transcendence", distinguished by Honneth, is constituted by a political subject that is determined neither by its class condition nor by its location within the so-called "new social movements". With this, the "society of contempt" and the corresponding struggle for recognition do not necessarily find their referents in the social struggles that occur in the contexts of advanced capitalist society. Finally, we analyze the scope of the theory of recognition in relation to the emancipatory objectives raised in the first generation of the Frankfurt School. ; Analizamos los alcances que tiene la teoría del reconocimiento de Axel Honneth como teoría crítica de la sociedad capitalista contemporánea. Para ese fin, mostramos cómo la teoría del reconocimiento se articula con la crítica inmanente de la sociedad y cómo Honneth intenta subsanar los vacíos existentes en el programa de la primera Escuela de Frankfurt. Seguidamente, se muestra que el momento de "trascendencia intramundana", distinguido por Honneth, está constituido por un sujeto político que no está determinado ni por su condición de clase, ni por su ubicación dentro los llamados "nuevos movimientos sociales". Con esto, la "sociedad del desprecio" y la correspondiente lucha por el reconocimiento no necesariamente encuentran sus referentes en las luchas sociales que se presentan en los contextos de la sociedad capitalista avanzada. Economic theories are often contrasted at times in whole or in large part, simply because one does not know one issue as problematic that the other considers essential. Unknown. It's like it doesn't exist in the analysis that one performs. That is why there is not agreement, let alone whether the ideology that underpins one and the other is an opposing and anachronistic thought fund. How then methodologically interpret those theories whose light of scientificity starts with the rise of capitalism? This question can perhaps be satisfied in this work as long as our methodological hypothesis is affirmed on a current reality. It is inspired by those societies abandoned by their thinkers, their philosophers and poets, frustrated and defeated by upstart policies, or because these policies directly respond to poorly educated drivers who, in turn, sail in polluted seas. The objective of this work is to analyze those theories that illustrated economic thinking from the dawn of capitalism when political economy appears, a discipline that would then nurture the concept of public policies (post-capitalism of the World Wars) when the rise of a giant power-states or the political spectrum. And the eyes turned to the economy as a longed-for response as poverty developed progressive forms that weakened and questioned the system. As a problem. Este interrogante quizás pueda satisfacerse siempre y cuando nuestra hipótesis metodológica se afirme sobre una realidad actual. La misma se inspira en aquellas sociedades abandonadas por sus pensadores, sus filósofos y poetas, frustrados y derrotados por políticas advenedizas, o porque directamente, esas políticas responden a conductores poco instruidos que, a su vez, navegan en mares contaminados. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar aquellas teorías que ilustraron el pensamiento económico desde los albores del capitalismo cuando aparece la economía política, disciplina que iría a nutrir luego el concepto de políticas públicas (poscapitalismo de las Guerras Mundiales) cuando el surgimiento de los estados-potencia agigantó el espectro político. Y las miradas se volvieron sobre la economía a medida que la pobreza desarrollaba formas progresivas que debilitaban y cuestionaban el sistema. Y la palabra sustentabilidad se convirtió en problema. Con este propósito se abordarán tres cuestiones problemáticas anudadas con conceptos teóricos que tomaron vigencia en los debates económicos actuales, en la mirada de tres pensadores: la libertad de elección desde lo personal y la educación como capacidad esencial (Amartya Sen); la potencialidad (dunamin en griego) hacia el bienestar económico, donde la ética es el valor político. ere, I track how the criteria for deeming sex as acceptable or unacceptable have changed over time at Augustana College. To do so, I apply two critical lenses to archived issues of the Augustana Observer. The first lens involves Rubin's concept of the "sex hierarchy," a variety of categories by which we may judge sex as good or bad. The second lens is related to Berlant and Warner's "national heterosexuality," a concept that claims that sexual norms are intrinsically elastic but politically, culturally, and economically firm under capitalism. Making use of a localized "snapshot" approach, I use recent Augustana history to demonstrate the fluid and intermittent properties of the sex discourse.

With the creation of our "modern world" came the ideology and system of nation-states. Land in its most natural and undivided condition was marked, fenced, walled, and mapped in order to give direct power of territory to a nation-state. The borderline between the United States and Mexico was established not so long ago, in 1857 after the US-Mexico War. The United States seized the opportunity to expand its "borders of freedom," and waged war in order to conquer land that was part of Mexico. Once half of Mexico's territory was taken, the borderline was established. However, from these historical roots, a complex and hybrid culture exists in this border region, along with a strong borderlander, fronterizo identity. This region has sparked the interest of many in the past, and has given rise to an extensive body of studies and theories. For my thesis, I wanted to explore this region's culture and identity from a unique and interesting angle. My first chapter is a consensus of a variety of studies on the US-Mexico borderland and also an explanation of Even-Zohar's theory of the laws of cultural interference. In my second chapter I explore the complicated topic of identity in the borderland, which is varied due to southern Mexican and Central American immigration, but a cogent reality for those inhabitants who identify strongly as "borderlanders." For my final chapter, I applied and evaluated the laws of Even-Zohar's theory to a set of photographs of the borderland from Alex Webb's Crossings. In evaluating his theory, I found that although there is a prominence and influence of American culture in the Mexican borderland, there is a balance between Mexican culture and American culture. A hybrid culture truly exists and forms a unique border culture. From this conclusion, I propose that the unity found between the borderlanders and their culture is an example and call for the governments of the United States and Mexico to do the same in order to solve the various drug trafficking and immigration conflicts in this region. More divisions should not be put up; instead, more cooperation is necessary. A borderline wall has not and will not solve anything, and certainly does not stop the flow of cultures. The borderland challenges the power of nation-states and borders, demonstrating the strength and significance culture has.

Currently the problem of human rights becomes relevant for a critical theory that is capable of accounting for the contexts in which sociopolitical crises and biopolitical crises experienced by communities, societies and states arise. On the other hand, today there is a serious deterioration in the rights of the most vulnerable people and groups. It is not a pessimistic prediction, but it is advancing on a winding path by which one advances towards a serious weakening of them and of the full understanding that is required to project a fraternal humanity. Thus, the defense of the dignity of all human beings and the firm and democratic resistance to movements with racist, homophobic, xenophobic, ultranationalist roots, among others, emerge as a major political problem. The hypothesis that we propose is that this serious deterioration refers to a lack of autonomous political thought that investigates the use and abuse of rights by the powers that be and is not subject to a universalizing argument of a moral and legal nature. We will approach said autonomy based on the topic of a constructivist theory of human rights in Latin America that can dialogue with Forst's constructivist perspective. We will point out that socio-political conflicts oblige not only to uncover the political paradox between government discourses, which on the one hand unrestrictedly defend human rights discourse while maintaining a "Universalist" format and on the other the widespread and systematic practices of repression and permanent violations of rights. citizens, but to the construction of a political theory of rights that ensures social justice and the autonomy and emancipation of peoples. ; En la actualidad la problemática de los derechos humanos se vuelve relevante para una teoría crítica que sea capaz de dar cuenta de los contextos en los que surgen las crisis sociopolíticas y de la crisis biopolítica vividas por comunidades, sociedades y estados. Por otra parte, se constata hoy en día la grave pendiente de deterioro de los derechos de las personas y colectivos más vulnerables. No es vaticinio pesimista, pero se avanza en una sinuosa senda por la que se avanza hacia un grave debilitamiento de ellos y de la plena comprensión que se requiere para proyectar una humanidad fraterna. Así la defensa de la dignidad de todos los seres humanos y la resistencia firme y democrática a los movimientos de raíces racistas, homofóbicos, xenofóbicos, ultranacionalistas, entre otros surge como un problema político mayor. La hipótesis que proponemos es que este grave deterioro refiere a una carencia de un pensamiento político autónomo que indague sobre el uso y abuso de los derechos por parte de los poderes fácticos y no quede supeditado a una argumentación universalizante de tipo moral y jurídico. AbstractHobbes's place in the history of political philosophy is a highly controversial one. An international symposium held at Queen Mary, University of London in February 2009 was devoted to debating his significance and legacy. The event focussed on recent books on Hobbes by Quentin Skinner and Philip Pettit, and was organised around four commentaries on these new works by distinguished scholars. This paper is designed to introduce the subject of the symposium together with the commentaries and subsequent responses from Petit and Skinner. It examines the themes of language and liberty in the philosophy of Hobbes and concludes by highlighting some of the ways in which further research into Hobbes's debt to Aristotle's Politics will prove fruitful and illuminating.

Starting from the symbolic presence of a scar in Edwidge Danticat's The Dew Breaker, which illustrates the tensions between wounds and healing, fragmentation and connection prevalent in the text, this article argues for a careful and contextualized look at narrative form in order to obtain a new, more complete view of the meanings in the text, including its political vindications. I offer a detailed definition of the short story cycle as a peculiar case of the simultaneity of closure and openness, both formally and in terms of meaning, which is aimed at making a contribution to the critical debates on this hybrid genre. When looking at both the sequential and independent readings of the text, the short story cycle proves most suitable to represent the complexity of the Haitian diaspora, and it also offers an interesting and necessary revision of trauma theory from the perspective of postcolonial studies. ; Partiendo de la presencia simbólica de una cicatriz en The Dew Breaker, de Edwidge Danticat, que ilustra las tensiones entre las heridas y la curación, la fragmentación y la conexión que prevalecen en el texto, este artículo aboga por una mirada cuidadosa y contextualizada a la forma narrativa con el fin de obtener una visión nueva y más completa de los significados presentes en el texto, incluidas sus reivindicaciones políticas. Se ofrece una definición detallada del ciclo de relatos como un caso peculiar de la simultaneidad de cierres y aperturas, tanto a nivel formal como de contenido, que tiene como objetivo contribuir a los debates críticos sobre este género híbrido. Al atender a las lecturas secuenciales e independientes del texto, se demuestra la adecuación del ciclo de relatos para representar la diáspora haitiana, y se ofrece además una revisión interesante y necesaria de la teoría de trauma desde el punto de vista de los estudios postcoloniales.

The 21st century is marked by unprecedented environmental issues and the climate change. These dramatic have a direct impact on societies all over the planet. Yet actually, our globalized societies, our consumption culture and our economic system are the source for many environmental issues and especially climate change. In order to find a proper response to this global emergency, we need a comparatist and transdisciplinary approach. For example, Stephanie Posthumus proposes to analyze the current ecological crisis by using literary theory and fiction instead of focusing on scientific theory, in order to create new concepts which give rise to new subjectivities. Her approach is based on the cultural specificities of French literature. By unifying literary theory and fiction, Posthumus uses, while creating it, the approach of "ecological readings". This approach has four key concepts : "ecological subjectivity", "ecological dwelling", "ecological politic" and "ecological ends". They are interconnected and central to the goal that aims to rethink humans and their environment. What aspects regarding gender and sexuality differences could have been "observed" by youth studies twenty-five years ago, and which ones can be observed today? What aspects could not be read from those codes that are read nowadays, and/or vice versa, and why? How has this perspective been molded? What is its former or current relationship with the intelligibility operations of these same distinctions in the most extended social agenda? How does this resonate today on our theoretical, investigative and intellectual commitment decisions regarding young male and female young people? From these guidelines, I will look into two shocking events for the Argentinian social life that took place in the extremes of the last two and a half decades; both events, the first of them in the early 90s and the other one, still contemporary, have acted as gateways for specific cultural, political and historical conjunctions. The purpose of this article is to analyze some of the articulation and possibility conditions enabling - or preventing - the public visualization of the link between gender and youth at each moment, as well as the meanings and scopes these critical differences have implied for research on youths.
