More than ever social workers have to face people from cultures other than their own. How can this professional group best meet the multicultural reality of today's society? It is in the social work study programs that the basis is laid for good cultural understanding in social work practice. It is also there that the basis is laid for social workers to orientate their work towards cultural processes that are relevant to the welfare situation of people.

Two case studies in multinational service enterprises (fast food and transport sector) show that strategies of corporate culture are quite efficient for management control of precarious and 'poor work'.

CSCI's market research revealed that people want their 'dignity, individuality and privacy' preserved when using public services. WwOP has previously explored the issue of 'dignity' (11.3, June 2007) and, given its emergence as a basic human right within the health and social care agenda, we return to the subject as Elaine Cass discusses the progress being made among social care and health workers to instil 'dignity' at the heart of services' cultures.

"The issue deals with the European Security Strategy of the European Union. The authors, argue that the current debate within the European Union concerning the future of the European Security Strategy is misleading. What the EU really needs is a conceptual hierarchy that helps it to develop and implement a strategic culture and identity. This would increase the EU's reliability as a global actor as well as consolidate security dialogues within the Union." (author's abstract)
