The paper seeks to understand North Korean culture via review of North Korean literature. The Chosun Munhak (the North Korean Literature Monthly) reflects North Korean literature published by the Korean Writers' Association. The paper reviews the Chosun Munhak from the January 1980 through the November 1991 issues paying particular attention to ideology and art in North Korean literature, North Korean views of South Korean literature and content analysis of short stories in Chosun Munhak. In this essay, I connect the sexual victimization of women, children, and pet animals with the violence manifest in a patriarchal culture. After discussing these connections, I demonstrate the importance of taking seriously these connections because of their implications for conceptual analysis, epistemology, and political, environmental, and applied philosophy. My goal is to broaden our understanding of issues relevant to creating peace and to provide some suggestions about what must be included in any adequate feminist peace politics.

We criticize the following views: only the rapist is responsible since only he committed the act; no one is responsible since rape is a biological response to stimuli; everyone is responsible since men and women contribute to the rape culture; and patriarchy is responsible but no person or group. We then argue that, in some societies, men are collectively responsible for rape since most benefit from rape and most are similar to the rapist.

The legacy of ancient writers to western culture since the Renaissance has long been acknowledged as a cornerstone of contemporary humanism. Yet within the vast territory of studies of the classical tradition there remains a large piece of uncharted terrain, and that is Russia, the significance of whose participation in the reception of antiquity has been largely excluded from investigation by foreign scholars and has only recently energized Russian scholars, particularly in the field of medieval studies.

As the author sees it, with the ejection of American military bases, the Republic of the Philippines (R.P.) is no more ally of the USA. He believes that Americans and Filipinos do not share a common view of rights and responsibilities. Exploring the specific case of R.P.-U.S. debate over retention of military bases, he shows how culture moulds behaviour and Americans and Filipinos have different views on rights and responsibilities. According to the author, schools are critical sites for the socialization of the young into the culture and political ideology of a centralized state. Social mobility through educational attainment is a widely stated aim of schooling but it is a seldom realized goal for rural students. Julia Kristeva is known as rejecting feminism, nonetheless her work is useful for feminist theory. I reconsider Kristeva's rejection of feminism and her theories of difference, identity, and maternity, elaborating on Kristeva's contributions to debates over the necessity of identity politics, indicating how Kristeva's theory suggests the cause of and possible solutions to women's oppression in Western culture, and, using Kristeva's theory, setting up a framework for a feminist rethinking of politics and ethics.

African writers in English have done much to enlarge the image of Africa in the world. The novelists among them have contributed most to the understanding of the African points of view and perspectives on life, politics, culture and history. In their roles as chroniclers, custodians of the collective heritage, social critics, teachers and visionaries of their people, the novelists have illuminated the African situation and the forces that have kept the continent in an endemic state of crisis.
