Why and how was the process of Western European integration relaunched in the 1980s and 1990s? This volume suggests a new framework of analysis of the European statebuilding tradition. Based on qualitative research (including more than 30 interviews with protagonists from EU member states), and detailed case studies and policy analyses (the genesis of the Single Market programme and the Single European Act, ESPRIT technology corporatism, biotechnology, EU regional and social policy) the authors show that new forms of cooperation between political and economic actors have developed, both at transnational and supranational level. The book shows how the European Commission, bureaucratic cabinets, national diplomats, transnational companies, pressure groups and representatives of the regions have set in motion a process that is changing statehood in Europe dramatically. This discussion of the origins of this process is a valuable contribution to the debate on the future of Europe in the world system
Fully revised and updated throughout, Theorizing European Integration 2nd edition provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical study of European integration. Combining perspectives from international relations, comparative politics and social and political theory, Dimitris N. Chryssochoou offers a complete overview of the many competing approaches that have sought to capture and explain the evolving political nature of the European Union (EU) and its qualitative transition from a union of states to a polity in its own right

Due to their grassroots orientation and their pan-European approach, green parties in Europe have been more sceptical towards EU integration than other European party families. As a result, their transnational party organization, the European Federation of Green Parties (EFGP), is not restricted to parties coming from EU member states. In this respect they differ from other important party families in Europe. On the other hand, the EFGP and its predecessor organization took on tasks related to the political system of the EU, such as the elaboration of platforms for the European elections or the incorporation of the green group in the European Parliament into a transnational party structure, as early as the mid-1980s. This makes the greens more similar to the other party families than has been previously supposed. Although major steps have been taken during the last 18 years with regard to transnational party cooperation, the greens have not yet managed to establish a real European party, however.
