Challenges the ostensible inevitability of globalization as a consequence of technological progress. This notion of "technological determinism" assumes the autonomy of technological development & yet also holds that technology's transformations of sociality are effects of technological attributes. Against this reified view of technological progress is posited a more complex & dynamic characterization of the global capitalist/technology relationship. The possibility that technological innovations (eg, the Internet) may be transformed so as to unsettle rather than enable capitalism & globalization emerges when the assumption of their inevitable symbiosis is demystified.
