This study of 190 homeless women in Portland, Oregon, found that most homeless women are young, have minor children, and are mobile. The majority have a history of physical or sexual abuse, many are in poor health, 18 percent have been in a mental hospital, and one-fourth are alcoholic. The implications of these findings for policies and practice are discussed.

Women constitute 50% of the migrant workers from the Philippines, with most employed as domestic or sex workers. Migrant labor is an internal part of the Filipino economy; migrants send over $6 billion to the Philippines each year. Some women, however, are commodified & exploited either as prostitutes -- eg, in Japan, where at least 75,000 Filipinas serve as sex workers -- or as mail order brides. These women suffer immense hardships, are beaten & even killed, & have few resources to counter the violence. Many of the Filipinas who migrate are well-educated, creating a significant intellectual drain on the economy. The Filipino migration policy is short-sighted & even suicidal, because it has done little to lower unemployment or raise wages in the Philippines, & it profits from the enslavement of women, on whom the future of the Philippines rests. 4 References. Assesses theoretical issues raised by feminist social scientists & sociologists of gender: the persistence of patriarchy; women's employment, political power, & social position; & the relationship between gender, class, collective action, the state, & the world system. While the social position of women around the world has been significantly affected by urbanization, industrialization, proletarianization, legal reforms, & the women's movement, women have also actively contributed in key ways to the labor market, the political-legal structure, & the family. The antiabortion movement & various fundamentalist movements suggest that these contributions have been met with a certain amount of hostility. 2 Photographs, 75 References. Data are presented revealing the status of women in Fla politics. The years from 1890 to 1960 saw the political awakening of women in Fla; the years since 1960 have seen dramatic change in their political & legal position. After 1960, the number of women elected to state & local offices increased sharply; legislation was passed to eliminate sexual distinctions in Fla law & to ensure women equality of treatment. Despite this progress, neither the Equal Rights Amendment nor a 1978 amendment to the state constitution to bar discrimination on the basis of sex won approval. The strongest support for women candidates & for the Equal Rights Amendment is found in the southern part of the state. Here native Floridians are least numerous & the culture of the South is weakest. It is suggested that both heavy inmigration of non-Southerners & reapportionment, which shifted power from the more traditional sections of the state, have contributed to the strengthened political position of Fla women. 3 Tables, 1 Figure.
