The rapid development in biomedicine creates knowledge-intensive policy fields on national and international arenas. In our ongoing project "Biomodifying technologies in change" we study presumably game-changing technologies such as CRISPR-cas9, iPS cells, xenotransplantation and 3D bioprinting. The project could be categorized as part of an "engaged program", using Sismondo's terminology (2008), in that we do not separate the epistemological dimensions from the political aspects of the science practices we study. Rather, we understand language and material processes in research as already in themselves always normative. Hence, the strife to make transparent and democratize scientific and technological processes, is somehow built into the research scope itself - even if not a directly activist agenda. One of the aims of the project is to understand how "responsible researchers" are fostered. We look into how ethical reflexivity is expressed, practiced and understood in the day-to-day of biomedical research environments. But what happens to our knowledge production when we make biomedical researchers engage in this bird's-eye view on their research and its socio-cultural circumstances? How can neither taking a distanced position, nor engaging in direct activism but rather pushing toward areas we consider possible hotbeds for public debate be further theoretically conceptualized? What does such an endeavor imply for our role as STS scholars? And how does that connect to the tendency to engage humanities and social science scholars as interpreters and mediators in cross-disciplinary projects in knowledge-intensive policy fields, such as ours ? In what way is the symmetry principle (Bloor, 1976) affected, when value-laden initiatives as ethical reflexivity and public engagement is treated as an inherent good or as "truths" to be pursued?

AbstractChanging ingrained behaviours linked to sexism and misogyny in policing cannot be achieved by a quick fix. There are numerous barriers to change within the policing system, which require multiple targeted interventions running in parallel to tackle sexism and misogyny successfully. A behavioural science approach was applied to 'diagnose' the problem and identify interventions systematically. This approach does not seek to explain behaviour in terms of the characteristics of individual officers or staff. It combines insights from a range of disciplines to understand how people act in particular contexts. There is no single intervention that can shift ingrained behaviour; a package of targeted interventions is needed. Using the 'behaviour change wheel' as the underpinning framework, four target behaviours, seven key influences on behaviour and twelve interventions for change were identified. The connections between the behaviours, influences and interventions illustrate how a holistic package of interventions is required to change culture across the policing system.

The paper provides a definition of sexual and reproductive health and infertility and also reflects modern ideas about ways to overcome infertility using assisted reproductive technologies, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy. It shows the specificity of the impact of an IVF procedure on the mental health of a potential mother. The features of the neonatal health status, as well as neuropsychiatric disorders in babies born using the IVF procedure are described. The authors present two types of surrogacy (traditional and gestational ones) and the features of their use in different countries according to governmental legislative regulation, socioeconomic and religious factors, and cultural traditions in society. They unveil the features of a psychological relationship between the mother (surrogate and presumed one) and the fetus. The consequences of surrogacy for a surrogate mother, genetic parents, and a child himself/herself are noted to be little studied. It is shown that the development of assisted reproductive technologies (IVF and surrogacy), on the one hand, helps fight infertility and, on the other hand, entails a number of problems (moral and ethical, legal, cultural and religious, socioeconomic, and neuropsychiatric ones) that need to be solved in order to prevent psychological, neurological, and mental abnormalities in all the participants (a surrogate mother, an unborn child, and potential parents) in the assisted reproductive process: ; В статье дано определение сексуального и репродуктивного здоровья, бесплодия, а также отражены современные представления о способах преодоления бесплодия методом вспомогательных репродуктивных технологий (ВРТ): экстракорпорального оплодотворения (ЭКО) и суррогатного материнства. Показана специфика влияния процедуры ЭКО на психическое здоровье потенциальной матери. Описаны особенности состояния здоровья новорожденных и психоневрологические расстройства у детей, рожденных с помощью процедуры ЭКО. Представлены два типа суррогатного материнства (традиционный и гестационный), особенности их использования в разных странах в зависимости от государственного законодательного регулирования, социально-экономических, религиозных факторов и культурных традиций в обществе. Раскрыты особенности психологической связи между матерью (суррогатной и предполагаемой) и плодом. Отмечена малая изученность последствий суррогатного материнства для суррогатной матери, генетических родителей и самого ребенка. Показано, что развитие вспомогательных репродуктивных технологий (ЭКО и суррогатного материнства), с одной стороны, помогает бороться с бесплодием, а с другой – влечет за собой целый ряд проблем (морально-этических, юридических, культурно-религиозных, социально-экономических, нейропсихиатрических), которые необходимо решать в целях профилактики психологических, неврологических и психических отклонений у всех участников вспомогательного репродуктивного процесса: суррогатной матери, будущего ребенка и потенциальных родителей.

Purpose of the article. The article explores the possibilities of the concepts of communication and information society as a methodological basis for the study of political processes in socio-cultural aspects. Methodology. Historical-logical, systemic, and scenario analysis methods are used to clarify the hypothesis that the global information space, in the context of weakening the internal and external process, is formed under the influence and at the expense of objects of transboundary communications. Scientific Novelty. The hypothesis is that: (1) in the conditions of weakening of the domestic and foreign political process, due to the growth of objects of transboundary communications, the formation of a global information space takes place; (2) However, this does not lead to the leveling of national sovereignty; (3) it is obvious that this tendency is transformed according to its rules. To improve research, synthesis from the theories of D. Bella, E. Toffler, M. Castells and the paradigm of semiotic political communication is proposed. Conclusions. The influence of communication technologies (1) restricts the choice of struggle tools between elite groups; (2) reduces the chances of a political elite in manipulating; (3) problematizes the effectiveness of traditional democracies in achieving the desired reform scenarios; (4) transforms the political process into virtually continuous electoral campaign; (5) increases the role of representative bodies, which promotes the promotion of government initiatives aimed at raising the level of professional competence of the elite. ; Цель исследования. В статье исследуются возможности концепций коммуникации и информационного общества как методологической основы исследования политических процессов в социокультурном аспекте. Методология. Историко-логический и системный методы анализа используются для уточнения гипотезы о том, что глобальное информационное пространство, в условиях ослабления внутреннего и внешнего процесса, формируется под влиянием, и за счет, объектов трансграничных коммуникаций. Научная новизна. Выдвигается гипотеза о том, что: (1) в условиях ослабления внутреннего и внешнеполитического процесса за счет роста объектов трансграничных коммуникаций происходит формирование глобального информационного пространства; (2) однако это не ведет к нивелированию национального суверенитета; (3) очевидно, что эта тенденция трансформируется согласно своим правилам. Для улучшения исследовательских практик предлагается синтез с теорий Д. Белла, Э. Тоффлера, М. Кастельса и парадигмы семиотической политической коммуникации. Выводы. Влияние коммуникационных технологий (1) ограничивает выбор инструментов борьбы между элитными группами; (2) сокращает возможности политической элиты в манипулировании; (3) проблематизирует эффективность традиционных демократий в достижении желаемых сценариев реформирования; (4) превращает политический процесс практически в непрерывную избирательную кампанию; (5) повышает роль представительных органов, способствует рекламе властных инициатив, направленных на повышение уровня профессиональной компетентности элиты. ; Мета дослідження. У статті досліджуються можливості концепцій комунікації та інформаційного суспільства як методологічної основи дослідження політичних процесів у соціокультурному аспекті. Методологія. Історико-логічний і системний методи аналізу використовуються для уточнення гіпотези про те, що глобальний інформаційний простір, в умовах послаблення внутрішнього та зовнішнього процесу, формується під впливом, та за рахунок, об'єктів трансграничних комунікацій. Наукова новизна. Висувається гіпотеза про те, що: (1) в умовах послаблення внутрішнього та зовнішньополітичного процесу за рахунок росту об'єктів трансграничних комунікацій відбувається формування глобального інформаційного простору; (2) однак це не веде до нівелювання національного суверенітету; (3) очевидно, що ця тенденція трансформується згідно своїх правил. Для покращення дослідницьких практик пропонується синтез із теорій Д. Белла, Е. Тоффлера, М. Кастельса та парадигми семіотичної політичної комунікації. Висновки. Вплив комунікаційних технологій (1) обмежує вибір інструментів боротьби між елітними групами; (2) скорочує можливості політичної еліти в маніпулюванні; (3) проблематизує ефективність традиційних демократій в досягненні бажаних сценаріїв реформування; (4) перетворює політичний процес практично в безперервну виборчу кампанію; (5) підвищує роль представницьких органів, що сприяє рекламі владних ініціатив, спрямованих на підвищення рівня професійної компетентності еліти.
