Expands upon ideas in the essay The birth of African-American culture (1992) the author co-wrote with Mintz, mainly concerning the creolization process among American blacks. Author describes how other scholars contested this essay, and argued that the African heritage, e.g. of African ethnicities, was more, and longer, present among slaves than Price and Mintz argued. He further expounds on these differing views regarding the speed and extent of cultural adaptation among (descendants of) African slaves in the Americas.

This paper analyses connections between culture and architecture, and between political ideology and capital planning in a region of China. It poses two crucial questions: first, what were the contrasting architectural expressions between imperial palaces in Shenyang? Second, what were the underlying planning concepts of Shenyang, and what urban design models were used to realize that concept? This study shows that the development of Manchurian architecture and planning had been a result of cultural confluence and political governance.

This article presents an overview of Oswald Spengler's theory of civilization based upon his `first' and `second' philosophies of history. The `late' Spengler left behind his more aesthetic and historicist understanding of civilization, turning to philosophical anthropology. Spengler lost confidence that a new great culture would someday emerge. While Samuel Huntington in The Clash of Civilizations argues that civilizational pluralism is growing and anticipates a non-Western civilization eventually succeeding a West in decline, dialog with Spengler suggests otherwise.

The United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica was established by the General Assembly in 1980. Over the past two decades the university has explored a number of innovative approaches to peace education, including actively working to create a culture of peace throughout Central America. Unfortunately, inadequate funding has limited its ability to become a fully fledged academic institution. Once financial stability is achieved, the university has the potential to become a major center for graduate peace studies in the Americas.

This essay analyses comparative approaches to forestry management in Mexico. In a primary case study, corruption in a community-owned logging business legitimates timber smuggling, and this situation contrasts with several forestry communities having internally-legitimate social institutions able to control such problems. A discussion assesses the institutional choice model for understanding change in the commons and contrasts it with an approach that views individual choices and actions as embedded in communities and cultures. The commons exists in a value-laden social context. (DSE/DÜI)

Interests have traditionally enjoyed a world class status, as shown in the "lex mercatoria," the only code that really applies universally. The case for rights is different, since the traditional weakness of rights when opposing interests has been lately increased by the emerging of new macroeconomic subjects that are virtually immune to political or judicial control. This situation cannot but provoke constitutional & democratic culture to provide new & more effective ways of legal protection. 16 References. Adapted from the source document.

Schmidt-Deguelle, political consultant & spin doctor of the German government, unfolds his views regarding "spin doctors," sometimes seen as lacking democratic legitimacy, in an interview conducted by Thomas Leif, journalist & co-editor of the Forschungsjournal Neue Soziale Bewegungen. He regards this legitimacy as an open question in a political culture with various forms of lobbying & political pressure. It is crucial, however, that there is trust between consultant & consulted & that spin doctors can be changed at any time. Adapted from the source document.

The electoral democracy created by the Sáenz Peña Law of 1912 opened
up dramatic new possibilities for working-class political identity. In the important
port city of Rosario, the Radical politician Ricardo Caballero crafted a political
discourse that combined an explicit defence of working-class interests with a
nostalgic depiction of the country's rural past. By linking class consciousness
with images drawn from the popular culture of the 'gauchesque,' Caballerismo
constructed a distinctively working-class version of Argentine nationalism and
citizenship.
