This book brings together a series of papers on education in rural Zimbabwe. It is informed throughout by the generative theory of rurality, which sees rural communities as the most significant agents in solving the challenges they face. Against this theoretical backdrop, the 13 chapters challenge policy makers, researchers and educators to confront the problem of poor academic performance among learners in rural learning ecologies. Education is largely absent in recent work on the history of development and modernization. Yet it was central to the political project of many leaders of decolonization and figured prominently in five-year plans and other development schemes. The article highlights the central role of education in concepts of development and social planning in the Middle East. This could take the form of central plans but also of statistical and computer-generated projections of future educational and manpower needs. After showing how different concepts of planning education were circulated at the level of international organizations, the article investigates the first Egyptian five-year plan. It looks at the Egyptian Institute of National Planning in Cairo, highlighting that Egyptian planners drew on a variety of different experts and institutions from the US and the Soviet Union to the GDR and India. While the late 1960s ushered in more scepticism toward formal planning and projection, the emphasis on expertise, knowledge and skills as central variables of modern societies has endured.

Contextualizing international education in British Columbia, this document explores the intersection between federal and provincial immigration policies and growing post-secondary institutional rhetoric around international education. This report touches on a range of complex issues, including recruitment of international students, pathway agreements, and the BC government tuition policy. Mapping these elements to recommendations, this report offers FPSE a thoughtful way forward in addressing the impact of international education on its members and post-secondary education more broadly.

The benefits of early childhood development (ECD) programmes are strongly supported by evidence of reduced school dropout and repetition rates. However, the literature on ECD is primarily grounded in research based in the United States (US); in the light of this gap in the literature, this paper provides a comparative overview of ECD policy and practice from outside of the US, namely in South Africa and Turkey. As a theoretical framework the paper has followed the World Bank's Systems Approach for Better Education Results (SABER)-ECD Analytical Framework. Findings indicate that both countries have established an enabling policy environment for ECD but implementation and the setting of and compliance to standards for quality is still emerging, in spite of massive strides made in this field during the past fifteen years.

Christian missionaries were some of the most influential actors in colonial India. Yet they only began working recently in relation to larger British influence in the subcontinent. Originally banned from the territories of the East India Company for fears of upsetting Indian religious sensibilities, they were allowed to operate after 1843 in parallel with a rising Utilitarian and evangelist fervour in Britain and within particular Company circles; the latter often blurred the distinctions between 'moral improvement', civilisation and Christianity. Missionaries were influential in the debate over sati and the subsequent outlaw of its practice. Protestant encounters with Hinduism and Islam were defined by the rhetoric of 'heathen' and 'unbelievers', as missionaries derided the 'idolatry' of Hinduism and 'bigotry' of Islam. Some of the first mission schools established were in the Bombay Presidency, Bengal and the Punjab. During this period missionaries ascribed utility to the corpus of western scholarship as an ally against Indian religions. They hoped to 'prove' their falsehoods. The primary way to do this was through western education, arguing that western scholarship was saturated with Christian morals and that such ethoses would transform Indians accordingly. This was a period when the symmetry between Christianity and western scholarship was championed by missionaries such as John Murdoch and Alexander Duff. After the Indian Mutiny (1857–8), missionaries were held in check (at least officially) by the colonial state as a means of avoiding upsetting Indian religious sensibilities. Yet, ironically, in northern India missionaries came to be relied upon by a cash-strapped Education Department. They came to dominate education and were credited with doing much to push the frontiers of western pedagogy in their efforts to propagate their faith.

The article reveals the features of introducing education for sustainable development in Ukraine, its theoretical basis and practical implementation on the example of Secondary Education in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The importance of forming an integrated developing educational environment based on the principles of education for sustainable development is proved. It determines the interdisciplinarity of the content of education for sustainable development, its high potential in creating a new type of educational environment. Methods and approaches of forming the values of sustainable development as important components of the development of life competencies of the individual are revealed.

The goal of research Implementation of Teaching and Learning Strategies in Early Childhood Education is a Government program in an effort to improve the quality of human resources with the development of long-term investment through education activities as early as possible. Fundamentally, the Indonesian government has listed this program, as outlined in the Medium Term Strategic .Related to that, this research is aimed to see how far the effectiveness and efficiency of the process of implementing the activity specifically in the area of study. As an effort to improve the implementation of the form of activities of Early Childhood Education Implementation, the implementation process is carried out in order to obtain information as big as possible and high relevance, thus forming a focused discussion and sharpen the discussion undertaken. The problem of implementation of the strategy that runs systematically and projected is measured on the basis of the process of implementation and scope of activities in the implementation.

Five principles underlie the changing policy architecture of American K-12 education. The author discusses these principles; how they are blurring the traditional demarcation of public and private schools; and the implications of this discussion for a private education research agenda.
