The boost feature that characterizes Z-source and quasi-Z-source converters is usually achieved by means of a proper insertion of short-circuit states in the full DC-link. In this work, a novel pulse width modulation carrier-based strategy for a three-phase, three-level T-type, quasi-Z-source inverter is introduced, based on the addition of alternate short-circuits in the two halves of the DC-link bus. This technique achieves better performance, less electromagnetic interference, and lower harmonic distortion of the output line-to-line voltage compared to the traditional methods based on the full DC-link shoot-through. At the same time, generating the switching states is to easy implement. The proposed strategy permits the use of electronic devices with lower blocking voltage capability, thus improving converter reliability, size, and cost. The new method may be implemented in another multilevel inverter with an impedance-source network as well. A comprehensive simulation study is performed in order to validate the adopted method, with different inverter input voltages, which is taken as representative of a photovoltaic array. A huge variety of organic microcontaminants are presently detected in freshwater ecosystems, but there is still a lack of knowledge about their interactions, either with living organisms or with other contaminants. Actually, carbon nanomaterials like fullerenes (C 60 ) can act as carriers of organic microcontaminants, but their relevance in processes like bioaccumulation and biotransformation of organic microcontaminants by organisms is unknown. In this study, mesocosm experiments were used to assess the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of three organic microcontaminants (venlafaxine, diuron and triclosan) in river biofilms, and to understand how much the concomitant presence of C 60 at environmental relevant concentrations could impact these processes. Results indicated that venlafaxine exhibited the highest bioaccumulation (13% of the initial concentration of venlafaxine in water), while biotransformation was more evident for triclosan (5% of the initial concentration of triclosan in water). Furthermore, biotransformation products such as methyl-triclosan were also present in the biofilm, with levels up to 42% of the concentration of accumulated triclosan. The presence of C 60 did not involve relevant changes in the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of microcontaminants in biofilms, which showed similar patterns. Probiotics, included in functional foods, nutritional supplements, or nutraceuticals, exhibit different beneficial effects on gut function. They are extensively used to improve the digestive processes as well as reduce the symptoms and progression of different diseases. Probiotics have shown to improve dysbiosis and modulate the immune response of the host by interacting with different cell types. Probiotics and the host can interact in a direct way, but it is becoming apparent that communication occurs also through extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from probiotics. EVs are key for bacteria–bacteria and bacteria–host interactions, since they carry a wide variety of components that can modulate different signaling pathways, including those involved in the immune response. Interestingly, EVs are recently starting to be considered as an alternative to probiotics in those cases for which the use of live bacteria could be dangerous, such as immunocompromised individuals or situations where the intestinal barrier is impaired. EVs can spread through the mucus layer and interact with the host, avoiding the risk of sepsis. Trabajo presentado en la 20th IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology, celebrada en Melbourne (Australia) del 13 al 15 de febrero de 2019 ; Uncertain generation by renewable sources and load variations have resulted in adding energy storage systems in the grid to maintain grid parameters (voltage, frequency) within prescribed limits. The disturbances being non-deterministic in nature, the voltage regulation control by the storage systems relies mostly on dual loop architecture with an outer voltage and inner current loop. Improvement in controller dynamics can be achieved through feed forward of disturbance profile but at expense of additional sensors and communication in the grid. This work explores the application of an adaptive disturbance rejection control scheme for disturbance estimation (without using additional sensors) employing an extended state and proportional integral observer (PI+ESO). The proposed observer aim to achieve robust disturbance estimation under grid parameter uncertainty. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme over the conventional one will be put forward through H¿ and H2 norm analysis of the system. This paper addresses the problem of object recognition from colorless 3D point clouds in underwater environments. It presents a performance comparison of state-of-the-art global descriptors, which are readily available as open source code. The studied methods are intended to assist Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) in performing autonomous interventions in underwater Inspection, Maintenance and Repair (IMR) applications. A set of test objects were chosen as being representative of IMR applications whose shape is typically known a priori. As such, CAD models were used to create virtual views of the objects under realistic conditions of added noise and varying resolution. Extensive experiments were conducted from both virtual scans and from real data collected with an AUV equipped with a fast laser sensor developed in our research centre. The underwater testing was conducted from a moving platform, which can create deformations in the perceived shape of the objects. These effects are considerably more difficult to correct than in above-water counterparts, and therefore may affect the performance of the descriptor. Among other conclusions, the testing we conducted illustrated the importance of matching the resolution of the database scans and test scans, as this significantly impacted the performance of all descriptors except one. This paper contributes to the state-of-the-art as being the first work on the comparison and performance evaluation of methods for underwater object recognition. An analysis of the spatial and temporal variability of daily precipitation concentration (CI) in Spain was made based on a high‐resolution (5 × 5 km) daily gridded precipitation data set for the 1950–2012 period. For each grid point in the Iberian Peninsula (IP) and Balearic and Canary Islands, the average annual CI was computed, as well as its coefficient of variation and the 5th and 95th percentiles. Annual values were also computed, and the time series of the index were used to assess temporal trends over the whole period. The spatial distribution of the CI showed a strong relationship with the orographic barriers near the coastlines. The Canary Islands showed the highest values of CI, along with the eastern Mediterranean facade of the IP. The highest inter‐annual variations of the CI occurred in the southern IP and in the southern Canary Islands. The study of probiotic microorganisms is very interesting in the aquaculture field. Administration of live microorganisms in adequate amounts confers some benefits to the host (Kechagia et al. 2013). Even if Shewanella putrafaciens include pathogens and saprophytic strains related to fish spoilage and fish infection (Esteve, Merchán, and Alcaide 2016). The Pdp11 strain of Shewanella putrefaciens has been proved to provide beneficial effects in Sparus aurata (Chabrillón et al. 2005) and Solea senegalensis (Rodrigáñez et al. 2008). Studies focused on Pdp11 could hed light on the origin of this probiotic character. We have designed a bioinformatic workflow to detect transposons in the newly sequenced Pdp11 genome (Tapia-Paniagua et al, in press). Their presence interrupting genes account for a contribution to its probiotic character due to the lost of virulence or the gain of probiotic effect. The workflow was developed in Ruby programming language and provides: the genomic localisation of known transposons, host coding regions disrupted by complete transposons or their repeated insertion sequences, and transposons and coding regions disrupted identifiers, to stablish the putative functions of Pdp11 that could be affect by the transposons disruption. These results would support new possible hypothesis about the Pdp11 probiotic character since 14 coding regions related to S. putrefaciens were disrupted by transposons, 4 of which are directly involved in pathogenic mechanisms. Mesoporous Ni and Cu-Ni (Cu20Ni80 and Cu45Ni55 in at. %) films, showing a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure and tunable magnetic properties, are prepared by electrodeposition from aqueous surfactant solutions using micelles of P-123 triblock copolymer as structure-directing entities. Pores between 5 and 30 nm and dissimilar space arrangements (continuous interconnected networks, circular pores, corrugated mesophases) are obtained depending on the synthetic conditions. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the Cu-Ni films have crystallized in the face-centered cubic structure, are textured, and exhibit certain degree of phase separation, particularly those with a higher Cu content. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to conformally coat the mesopores of Cu20Ni80 film with amorphous Al2O3, rendering multiphase "nano-in-meso" metal-ceramic composites without compromising the ferromagnetic response of the metallic scaffold. Melatonin (Mel) is considered a potent natural antioxidant molecule given its free-radical scavenging ability. Its origin is traced back to the origin of aerobic life as early defense against oxidative stress and radiation. More complex signaling functions have been attributed to Mel as a result of evolution in different biological kingdoms, which comprise gene expression modulation, enzyme activity, and mitochondrial homeostasis regulation processes, among others. Since Mel production has been recently reported in wine yeast, we tested the protective effect of Mel on Saccharomyces cerevisiae against oxidative stress and UV light. As the optimal conditions for S. cerevisiae to synthesize Mel are still unknown, we developed an intracellular Mel-charging method to test its effect against stresses. To assess Mel's ability to protect S. cerevisiae from both stresses, we ran growth tests in liquid media and viability assays by colony count after Mel treatment, followed by stress. We also analyzed gene expression by qPCR on a selection of genes involved in stress protection in response to Mel treatment under oxidative stress and UV radiation. The viability in the Mel-treated cells after H2O2 stress was up to 35% greater than for the untreated controls, while stress amelioration reached 40% for UVC light (254 nm). Mel-treated cells showed a significant shortened lag phase compared to the control cells under the stress and normal growth conditions. Hinging on ideas from physical-layer network coding, some promising proposals of coded random access systems seek to improve system performance (while preserving low complexity) by means of packet repetitions and decoding of linear combinations of colliding packets, whenever the decoding of individual packets fails. The resulting linear combinations are then temporarily stored in the hope of gathering enough linearly independent combinations so as to eventually recover all individual packets through the resolution of a linear system at the end of the contention frame. However, it is unclear which among the numerous linear combinations-whose number grows exponentially with the degree of collision-will have low probability of decoding error. Since no analytical framework exists to determine which combinations are easiest to decode, this makes the case for a machine learning algorithm to assist the receiver in deciding which linear combinations to target. Transcurridos más de cuarenta años desde el final de la dictadura franquista, una parte del imaginario colectivo español la identifica como la primera gran impulsora del Estado de Bienestar en España. Dislocados por la historiografía los viejos, pero eficaces, mitos que sirvieron para justificar el origen de la rebelión militar y el hambre, y también el que pretendía redimir a la dictadura por el desarrollo económico posterior, todavía permanece en pie el de la dictadura como creadora de un sistema de seguridad social en España que anticipa el actual. Las investigaciones existentes sobre las políticas sociales de la dictadura, realizadas por historiadores de la medicina o de la economía, demuestran sin embargo lo exagerado de este tipo de percepciones, y revelan una realidad más compleja que requiere un debate en profundidad al que este trabajo pretende contribuir. ; More than four decades since the end of Franco's dictatorship, part of the Spanish collective memory identifies the dictatorship as the first great promoter of the Welfare State in Spain. Historiographical research has dismantled the old, though effective, myths used to justify the origin of the military rebellion and the famine, as well as the myth intended to redeem the dictatorship based on the subsequent economic modernization. However, the myth of Franco's dictatorship as creator of the social welfare system in Spain that anticipated the current one remains. Many investigations conducted by historians of medicine and economics on Franco's dictatorship social policies demonstrate the exaggeration of this type of perceptions. This paper deals with the problem of sparse beamforming for interference mitigation in milimiter wave (mm Wave) frequency bands. Multiantenna solutions in mmWave are generally implemented with phase shifters which are known to have good interference rejection capabilities. However, phase shifters are power-demanding components and, depending on their resolution, they require bulky hardware solutions able to accommodate the control lines. On the other hand, the use of switches leads to a cost-efficient alternative able to provide a sufficiently large interference rejection while substantially reducing the hardware cost and power consumption. This work proposes a beamforming scheme able to maximize the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) assuming that the beamforming weights can only take 0 and 1 values. The resulting optimization problem is a binary quadratic fractional problem which is a difficult non-convex problem. Two optimization approaches are proposed; namely, the semidefinite relaxation and the penalized convex-concave procedure. Magnetotactic bacteria synthesize a chain of magnetic nanoparticles, called magnetosome chain, used to align and swim along the geomagnetic field lines. In particular, Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense biomineralize magnetite, Fe3O4. Growing this species in a Co-supplemented medium, Co-doped magnetite is obtained, tailoring in this way the magnetic properties of the magnetosome chain. Combining structural and magnetic techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near edge structure, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we determine that 1% of Co2+ substitutes Fe2+ located in octahedral places in the magnetite, thus increasing the coercive field. In the framework of the Stoner-Wohlfarth model, we have analyzed the evolution of the hysteresis loops as a function of temperature determining the different magnetic anisotropy contributions and their evolution with temperature. In contrast with the control magnetosome chains, whose effective anisotropy is uniaxial in the whole temperature range from 300 to 5 K, the effective anisotropy of Codoped magnetosome chains changes appreciably with temperature, from uniaxial down to 150 K, through biaxial down to 100 K, to triaxial below 100 K. ; L.M. acknowledges the Basque Government for her fellowship (PRE_2015_1_0130). El espacio urbano sirvió en el Antiguo Régimen como un ?escenario? en el que se expresaban posiciones y tensiones de naturaleza social, económica y política. El análisis de las ocupaciones, desalojos y traslados que experimentó el tribunal de la Inquisición de Sicilia hasta ocupar su emplazamiento definitivo en la ciudad de Palermo, con los agentes y objetivos que los impulsaron y los conflictos y negociaciones que se escenificaron en torno a ellos, se plantea en este trabajo como vía de aproximación a las dinámicas sobre las que se configuró la posición del Tribunal en términos de competencia-cooperación, conflicto-negociación, subordinación y preeminencia, en el espacio político, institucional y jurisdiccional de la ciudad y del reino sicilianos y también de la Monarquía española a lo largo del siglo XVI. ; This article analyses the process of stabilizing the seat of the Spanish Inquisition of Sicily in the city of Palermo.
