This paper explains changes in partisanship among Catholics in the last quarter of the 20th Century using a theory of partisan change centered on the contexts in which Catholics lived. Catholics were part of the post-New Deal Democratic coalition, but they have become a swing demographic group. We argue that these changes in partisanship are best explained by changes in elite messages that are filtered through an individual's social network. Those Catholics who lived or moved into the increasingly Republican suburbs and South were the Catholics who were most likely to adopt a non-Democratic partisan identity. Changes in context better explain Catholic partisanship than party abortion policy post Roe v. Wade or ideological sorting. We demonstrate evidence in support of our argument using the ANES cumulative file from 1972 through 2000.

This paper will explore thereasons for decision-makers, in this case Azerbaijan's president Ilham Aliyev, when making decisions that might seem irrationalfrom an outside perspective. Using Alex Mintz' Poliheuristic theory of the decision model from 'Applied Decision Analysis: UtilizingPoliheuristic Theoryto Explain and Predict Foreign Policy and National Security Decisions'in 2005, I will make an attempt tocometo an understanding of, and explain, Azerbaijan'sPresident Aliev'sdecision to refrain from using force regarding NagornoKarabakhafter 1993, and assess the possible use of force in the near future.

Drawing principally on the literature and in primary data we analyze the farm structure in Portugal and explain the duality agrarian system between Southern and Northern of the country, introduce a new concept semi-subsistence farms in Portugal. After we analyze the main reasons for agricultural households in Portugal which possess a large subsistence and semi-subsistence farming sector. The study indicates that the contribution of subsistence farming to household incomes, social and rural development is significant and have potential to development due the macroeconomic situation in Portugal. But concerning that, stronger quantitative analysis and studies are needed. Due the prevalence and importance of small farms in Portugal, the main EU Common Agricultural Policy instruments must suited to respond to the specific needs of these subsistence farmers. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

Objective: To know the practices developed for users with arterial hypertension. Method: A descriptive-exploratory research, with qualitative approach realized in people with arterial hypertension living in the coverage area of a Family Health Unit of a city in southern Brazil. The data collection occurred during the months of February and March 2011 through semi-structured interviews. To analyze the data was used the thematic analysis. Results: From data analysis emerged the following categories: care with food; medication care, care with physical activities; care in maintaining emotional balance; popular care. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance to know the care developed for hypertensive users in order to better lead the health actions in this public, valuing their practices and paying attention to the difficulties experienced for them in the realization of such care.

The Eritrean place names Ḳoħay-to and Ḳoħay-n contain the root √ḳlħ which can be recognized too in the Old South Arabian place name Ḳlħn. The identity of Ḳoħayto with the classical Κολόη reported by the Periplus Maris Erythraei (1st century A.D.) is based on phonological and semantic considerations. The meaning of the root becomes evident from Sabaen ḳlħ 'raised water-channel' as well as from its modern Yemeni Arabic equivalent qalħ 'upper fields; a water channel through which water is conducted to higher level pipes'. In Tigrinya the same root is attested in several verbal and nominal forms as in ḳwålaɦta 'upward look with raised head'. This meaning fits very well to the geographic position of Koloë/Ḳoɦayto on the eastern edge of the Eritrean plateau.

This paper considers the different approaches to undertake knowledge exchange between academia and the third sector from three practitioner perspectives. London South Bank University (LSBU), as part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) Social Enterprise Capacity Building Cluster (CBC), has been involved in a number of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) and other capacity building projects. TSRC has developed an approach that offers a step change in the way academic institutions can integrate knowledge exchange as part of a more participatory research process. The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) produces research-based evidence that aims to be responsive to, and help inform and shape, public policy and practice. The paper concludes with an analysis of the different approaches.

The filming of sexual acts for publication is legal in California, which has led to the development of a robust adult film industry in Southern California, particularly in the Los Angeles area. Recently, regulations have been proposed that would require actors in pornographic films to wear condoms. This comment examines legal objections to "The County of Los Angeles Safer Sex in the Adult Film Industry Act" and CalOSHA's assertion that California law requires the use of prophylactics in adult films. It argues that sexual expression in these adult films is protected under the First Amendment, although it may still be subject to government regulation. The mandate that actors wear condoms or use other prophylactic devices is unconstitutional because it cannot satisfy the standard laid out in United States v. O'Brien.

The Subcarpathian area between Buzău and Slănic rivers, located in the south-eastern part of Romania, is one of the most affected areas by the
torrential related phenomena. This occurs due to physical-geographical and economical-geographical factors, such as: slope, curvature profile, lithology, soil texture and land use. In order to calculate and spatially model the surface runoff potential index, these factors were integrated
and worked in GIS enviroment. Each characteristic of the factors was given a bonitation score, according to the way that it influences surface
runoff. By applying the methodology mainly taken after Smith (2003), the Flash-Flood Potential Index was obtained, with values between 19.4 - 44.5. The highest values of the index correspond to deforestated slopes, which exceed 15º, located in Bălăneasa and Sărățel river basins.

Deeply-embedded norms of liberalism and protectionism alongside EU policies focusing on promoting development and regional integration have shaped EU-Mercosur relations. These stand in stark contrast to the policies of the US, the historic hegemon in the region. This paper utilizes historical institutionalism to understand how the liberal tenets of EU competition policy and the protectionism of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) have affected EU-Mercosur relations. Particular foci include Spain's role in spearheading efforts to promote EU-Latin American relations and the way EU competition policies directed against monopolies in Europe spurred increased investment in Latin America, especially the Southern Cone. The latter prompted the EU to forge closer ties with Mercosur, encouraged cooperation and development programs and spurred regional integration and liberal trade regimes in Latin America.

This paper is drawn from ethnographic participant-observation data and interview materials collected between September 2004 and July 2005 in 'Kingsland', an inner-city, multiethnic comprehensive secondary school in the South West of England. It explores the complex and often contradictory ways in which young people negotiate and reflect on notions of identity and difference in relation to social and pedagogical vocabularies of belonging, friendship and fairness which operate within their school. The paper pays particular attention to experiences and perspectives outlined by Kingsland's 'white British' or 'ethnic majority' students in order to highlight and critically examine some of the tensions within, and limitations to, both national policy frameworks for citizenship education and local, institutional discourses which powerfully construct the school as a strongly antiracist multicultural community.

AbstractThis paper investigates the evidence on living standards in colonial economies, with particular reference to South East Asia in the decades from 1900 to 1942. Various measures are investigated, including availability of basic needs, demographic indicators, especially mortality rates, anthropometric measures and wage data. The paper concludes that in spite of the growth in GDP which occurred in most parts of the region between 1900 and 1940, improvements in living standards were modest, and by the late 1930s most colonies had low educational enrolments and high mortality rates. The Philippines had probably the highest living standards in the region, using educational indicators, mortality rates and per capita GDP estimates. But even in the Philippines rice availability per capita was low, and nutritional levels among some segments of the population were also below acceptable standards.

Plant finds recovered from archaeological sites in southern Scandinavia dated to the Viking Age reflect the diversity of useful plants that were cultivated and collected. This review presents the results of 14 investigations of deposits that are dated between AD 775 and 1050. The site types are categorized as agrarian, urban, military and burials. Garden plants are unevenly distributed, as the greatest diversity is recorded in features from urban contexts. We argue that taphonomic processes played an important role in the picture displayed. Archaeobotanical research results from neighbouring regions suggest that Viking Age horticulture has its roots in older traditions, and that the spectrum of garden plants is influenced by central and north-western European horticultural customs, which were to a great extent shaped by Roman occupation.

Its authors compare the offerings of various disciplines, in particular economics and sociology, for policy advice. The demand and supply side of this activity are discussed. The leitmotif for the articles in this book is the Social Market Economy, and a further unifying theme is the application to transformation economies in South East Europe, both within the EU and beyond.
