"How do social workers in the UK legal context act ethically? What do we understand by ethics and how does social work law relate to it? Social work practice in all countries incorporates a clear, unstinting commitment to social justice, but what is social justice? Using an applied, practice-based and refreshingly 'real' approach, this text bridges the gap between law and ethics. Each chapter open with a case study which considers ethical dilemmas in real life practice. Chapters have been designed to help students strengthen their critical reflection skills, encouraging consideration of the legal and ethical dimensions of social work generally and in personal practice. Through an examination of topics such as care proceedings, adoption, community care, youth justice, mental capacity and accountability the book demonstrates how understanding both ethical theory and its application to practice are equally important"--Back cover.

The Oxford Handbook of International Refugee Law is a comprehensive, critical work, which analyses the state of research across the refugee law regime as a whole. Drawing together leading and emerging scholars, the Handbook provides both doctrinal and theoretical analyses of international refugee law and practice. It critiques existing law from a variety of normative positions, with several chapters identifying foundational flaws that open up space for radical rethinking. The Handbook aspires to be global, both legally and geographically. Contributions assess a wide range of international legal instruments relevant to refugee protection, including from international human rights law, international humanitarian law, international migration law, the law of the sea, and international and transnational criminal law.

A discussion of the use of children combatants in war notes that an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 persons under age 18 are currently taking an active role in armed conflicts. International law designed to protect children in this situation developed in response to the changing nature of warfare & new attitudes toward children as a group. Achievements of the 1924 League of Nations Declaration for the Rights of the Child, the 1939 Save the Children International Union, the International Red Cross, & the Geneva Conventions are pointed out. Participation of children increased when the nature of war shifted toward guerrilla combat. Examination of new protocols prohibiting military recruitment of children that were added to the Geneva Conventions in 1977 contends that the wording left a great deal to the discretion of military leaders, & there was no direct ban on children as spies, gear carriers, or guards. Reasons why children are desirable as combatants are discussed, along with why many children voluntarily become involved in war activities. 4 References. J. Lindroth
