The present research was conducted to empirically examine whether death anxiety is the fundamental fear that feeds people's fear of COVID-19 and leads to increased behavioral compliance with and acceptance of COVID-19 regulations. Results from an online survey of 313 participants from New York City show that death anxiety was, indeed, positively associated with behavioral compliance with, but not acceptance of, COVID-19 regulations via an increased fear of COVID-19. Hence, media campaigns that are designed to increase people's compliance with restrictive COVID-19 measures by stirring up their death anxiety are likely to meet their target, but they do not necessarily lead to increased public acceptance of the measures taken.

Studying the real-world effects of these vaccines is an urgent requirement. The aim of our study was to investigate the association between the mass roll-out of the first doses of these COVID-19 vaccines and hospital admissions for COVID-19. Methods We did a prospective cohort study using the Early Pandemic Evaluation and Enhanced Surveillance of COVID-19—EAVE II—database comprising linked vaccination, primary care, real-time reverse transcription-PCR testing, and hospital admission patient records for 5·4 million people in Scotland (about 99% of the population) registered at 940 general practices. Individuals who had previously tested positive were excluded from the analysis. A time-dependent Cox model and Poisson regression models with inverse propensity weights were fitted to estimate effectiveness against COVID-19 hospital admission (defined as 1–adjusted rate ratio) following the first dose of vaccine. Findings Between Dec 8, 2020, and Feb 22, 2021, a total of 1 331 993 people were vaccinated over the study period. The mean age of those vaccinated was 65·0 years (SD 16·2). The first dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine was associated with a vaccine effect of 91% (95% CI 85–94) for reduced COVID-19 hospital admission at 28–34 days post-vaccination. Vaccine effect at the same time interval for the ChAdOx1 vaccine was 88% (95% CI 75–94). Results of combined vaccine effects against hospital admission due to COVID-19 were similar when restricting the analysis to those aged 80 years and older (83%, 95% CI 72–89 at 28–34 days post-vaccination). Interpretation Mass roll-out of the first doses of the BNT162b2 mRNA and ChAdOx1 vaccines was associated with substantial reductions in the risk of hospital admission due to COVID-19 in Scotland. There remains the possibility that some of the observed effects might have been due to residual confounding. Community confidence in institutional approaches to emergency management directs how they cooperate and comply with public policy responses. In the context of emerging COVID-19 pandemic risk management, this study aims to assess public confidence in the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and private sector entities for the activities undertaken during preparedness, prevention, and response phases. A survey was conducted with 307 respondents who willingly took part in the study. Cronbach's alpha was calculated to assess the internal reliability and the Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to estimate the mean score difference between the observations. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied in the study. The findings suggest that the participants were highly positive about the GoB efforts to organize and provide PPE for doctors in time as a safeguard against COVID-19 and coordination and informed decision making in relation to facing COVID-19. Overall, the participants showed a lower-level confidence in the preparedness and response measures taken by authorities in Bangladesh. The results explored how the GoB failed to reach the public satisfaction level regarding provision of food and financial support to low income and middle income people. A lack of collaboration and coordination among different inter-GoB and private sectors makes mitigation and recovery process difficult. This research provides a set of policy recommendations for future public health emergency management based on the participants' concerns and suggestions, and a review of consequences of policy responses in the early stage.

AbstractIn the lead article of this symposium, Florian Bieber predicted that the Covid-19 pandemic would have limited long-term effects on the global rise in the level of nationalism because most governments were likely to revert to their prior nationalist trajectories following the pandemic. Nonetheless, I argue that we can learn something about the role of nationalism in the management of public health crises by looking at the variable state responses to the arrival of the virus within their borders. In the modern international system, state governments are tasked with safeguarding the health and well-being of their national populations. During national emergencies, sovereigntist movements form around competing images of the nation that deserves protection. This article uses political artwork to show how different images of the idealized sovereign community were employed to justify divergent pandemic policies of US President Donald Trump and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Over the course of the pandemic, both leaders came under fire for failing to protect their constituents, providing space for alternative leaders and models of national protection.

The present research aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the behavior of Portuguese consumers concerning the purchase of food. For this purpose, a quantitative study was performed, using a sample composed of 741 Portuguese consumers. The study was carried out between November 2020 and February 2021, a period during which the most severe measures of social isolation were imposed by the Portuguese government since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020. The results show that during the pandemic, consumers changed their behavior patterns, specifically: in the frequency of shopping; the use of transport to carry out the purchases; the amount of the budget allocated for this purpose; and the channels used to purchase. Based on these results, managers and policy makers will be able to adjust or redefine their strategies to meet new consumer preferences, thus promoting individual well-being and business success. Our research is original as it is focused on the Portuguese context at a specific point in time motivated by the external factors that arose from the dissemination of the Covid-19 pandemic, consequently affecting consumers' behavior on food purchase. Furthermore, it adds value to the literature with new findings on consumer behavior change within a pandemic environment, and the application of practical assistance to market practitioners as well as advice to policy makers. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution of BLT in Blitar Regency could be distributed properly. Then for the better future it is hoped that this research can provide a clearer understanding of the main problems related to the distribution of COVID-19 social assistance so the further research can elaborate on alternative solutions. The research method used is qualitative methods. This study focuses on the evaluation of Cash Transfer for the poor or underprivileged in Blitar Regency. This research activity was carried out in Sumberjo Village, Sutojayan District, Blitar Regency. The result of this research shows Sumberjo Village is one of the villages in Blitar Regency that received the Social Assistance program in the form of Cash Transfer (BLT). The mechanism on data recipients collecting of Cash Transfer (BLT) in Sumberjo Village is carried out in accordance with the regulations from the Ministry of Villages which consist of 14 criteria for the recipients of Cash Transfer (BLT). In addition to being carried out in accordance with the regulations, the mechanism for collecting data on recipients of Cash Transfer (BLT) in Sumberjo Village also considers data from the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Integrated Data for Social Welfare (DTKS). The number of BLT recipients in Sumberjo Village in stage 1 and 2 of 2020 was 23 KPM while in stage 3 was 21 KPM. The process of distributing Cash Transfer (BLT) by the Sumberjo Village Government ran relatively smooth.
