With the world increasingly dependent on mathematics and problem-solving skills, the poor mathematics performance of deaf and hard of hearing students is cause for concern. The present article focuses on the mathematics competency of teachers of deaf and hard of hearing students as a factor in this poor performance. As part of a larger study (Pagliaro, 1996, 1998a), deaf education teachers provided data on their postsecondary education and their professional development activities related to mathematics. Administrators were also questioned to investigate the schools' contribution to these activities. Results reveal an insufficient level of mathematics preparation among deaf education teachers, especially at the high school level. Few hold degrees in a mathematics-related field, and only a moderate number seek professional development in this discipline. Recommendations for improving the mathematics competencies of deaf education teachers are provided, with the objective of improving student performance.

In the present paper the effects of different pay-as-you-go pension systems on fertility decisions of a representative household are examined. Thereby, the analysis focuses especially on the interplay of parental quantity and quality decisions, introduced by Becker (1960). As it will be shown, a traditional pay-as-you-go system in either case distorts decisions of parents leading to an erosion of the financial basis of the system. In contrast, the assessment of a child-related pay-as-you-go system is ambiguous. If parents are solely responsible for expenditures on the quality of children, it is inefficient, too. However, if it is combined with a device like public education, optimality can be restored.

revolutionary teachings on the matter?

The article reveals the features of introducing education for sustainable development in Ukraine, its theoretical basis and practical implementation on the example of Secondary Education in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The importance of forming an integrated developing educational environment based on the principles of education for sustainable development is proved. It determines the interdisciplinarity of the content of education for sustainable development, its high potential in creating a new type of educational environment. Methods and approaches of forming the values of sustainable development as important components of the development of life competencies of the individual are revealed.

This article makes a critical commentary on a few popular opinions on education, which are indeed based on distorted understanding of the nature and functions of education and myopic short-term perspectives and desires. Further, it stresses the need to correct them, so that education serves the broader social purposes.

The sociology of education is fundamentally concerned with the role of education in social reproduction and change. In Australia such a focus informs fields like gender and education, vocational education and lifelong learning, policy sociology in education, cultural sociology of education, literacy, social justice and education, globalisation and education. This article examines the political and intellectual trajectory of Australian sociology of education. It points to the productivity of educational research in areas such as gender, literacy, and policy and to the failure of sociology of education to address the reproduction of Indigenous and ethnic disadvantage. The paper argues that the theoretical and methodological innovations that characterise sociology are a disciplinary strength, but that it is necessary for the sociology of education to fully grapple with issues of Indigenous and minority education and more recently issues of environmental sustainability.

The pace of adoption of distance-learning services has accelerated during the past few years due to more reliable equipment, lower costs, and better design of learning materials. Many new applications for distance learning emphasize low-end equipment with fewer bells and whistles, a new or extended use for an existing technology or network, interactive learning components, and new partnerships between public and private sector groups. In implementing new distance-learning applications, it is important to emphasize the service to be provided, not the technology that provides it. Further, teachers should be viewed as partners who are essential to the success of an application, not as enemies of technology. From a policy perspective, telecommunications may be viewed as a highway system that will serve a vital role in education and economic development during the next century. In order to construct a comprehensive highway system, it will be necessary to organize many existing telecommunications groups, such as public broadcasters, cable operators, and telephone companies.
