This edited volume provides a convenient entry point to the cutting-edge field of the international politics of technology, in an interesting and informative manner. Technology and World Politics introduces its readers to different approaches to technology in global politics through a survey of emerging fusions of Science and Technology Studies and International Relations. The theoretical approaches to the subject include the Social Construction of Technology, Actor-Network Theory, the Critical Theory of Technology, and New Materialist and Posthumanist approaches. The paper examines the fundamental doctrines of Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the light of Max Weber's thesis in the sociology of religion. It is argued that while the main doctrines of Buddhism are certainly inimical to wordly activities, the contemporary Buddhists in Sri Lanka clearly distinguish doctrinal Buddhism from their worldly activities. Thema dieser Studie ist die Verbindung von Theologie und Musik als ideologisches Instrumentarium des Bayreuther Kreises, der als Bindeglied zwischen Richard Wagner und der NS-Ideologie fungierte. Anhand von Quellen untersucht der Autor die zentrale Bedeutung von Religion und Musik in der Rezeption der Musik und Werke Wagners durch Hans von Wolzogen und Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Er zeigt, dass die nationalsozialistische Rezeption der musikalischen und theoretischen Schriften nicht ohne Berücksichtigung des Bayreuther Kreises verstanden werden kann. Die Studie geht dieser Verbindung nach und zeigt das Spannungsverhältnis von Theologie und Musik im Werk Wagners.

The literature on socioeconomic status and health suggests that those in higher positions have better health, and those in lower positions have worse health. There is little evidence of an SES gradient in non-industrialized countries, however, and it is uncertain whether the health gradient established in many Western countries would apply in developing countries. In this study, the authors examine patterns in health outcomes by caste and religion in India, a developing country. Results from a nationally representative sample, the Indian Human Development Survey, suggest that while high SES social groups report less communicable disease, they report a higher prevalence of chronic diseases than low SES groups. This study demonstrates the need to examine diseases of affluence among high SES groups in developing countries while also identifying the particular health concerns that are prevalent among low SES groups.

ABSTRACTThis article discusses the rise of evangelical carnival parades in Rio de Janeiro in relation to spectacular carnival parades that feature Afro‐Brazilian religious elements. The article exposes divergent intersections of religion and cultural heritage in Brazilian carnival. The first intersection aims to affirm the intrinsic connection between samba enredo carnival music and Afro‐Brazilian religion by means of cultural heritage narratives, and the second type employs similar narratives to undo this connection, attempting to make samba enredo accessible to evangelical religious performance. The article demonstrates the important role secularism plays in upholding distinctions between "culture" and "religion," and shows how evangelical carnival groups engage with such historical formations by means of estratégia (strategy)—evangelical performances in cultural styles that are commonly perceived as "worldly." This estratégia depends on and proposes a particular set of semiotic ideologies that allows for the separation of cultural form and spiritual content. Efforts to open up "national" cultural styles to different religious groups in light of multicultural politics are laudable, but advocates of such politics should keep in mind that cultural heritage regimes concerning samba push in the opposite direction and support a different set of semiotic ideologies.
