This commentary introduces fascia, our bodily connective tissue, as a contribution to thinking body as process beyond mind–body dualisms. Research in the field of Fascia Studies has shown that fascias' core qualities are shifting and sliding in tensional responsiveness and that its both/and tissue- and-system features challenge clear-cut definitions. Acknowledging these characteristics of human physiology in novel ways, and in particular fascia as our largest sensory organ, becomes relevant to ontologies, alterities and research methodologies emphasizing experience and transdisciplinarity. Importantly, the notion is never to theorize fascia as model or metaphor but as quotidian processual responsive proposition.

What kind of capital does a particular group possess and how does it go about reproducing that capital? How does this capital get converted into new socio-political currencies? How do the elites grapple with competing notions of social morality and their place in it? What are the performative strategies that are at work, legitimating certain types of elites but not others? Are elites interest groups, or do they mutate into identity groups in changing social environments? Do the elites reflect a new social order or create one; are they conscience keepers of a society or do they produce a particular consciousness? How do cultural elites position themselves vis-à-vis the state, class, caste and gender or the people, the masses? The following papers of this special issue, in varying degrees, address some of these questions. They bring together scholars, junior and senior, Indian and European, who have worked intensively on the Indian subcontinent and its elites.

© 2019 Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. All rights reserved. A multidisciplinary and collaborative team network is essential in ensuring positive health outcomes for critically ill neonatal patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the perceptions of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) doctors and nurses in Australia and Poland toward pharmaceutical care services in the NICU. A cross-sectional, anonymous, electronic-based survey was distributed between January and April 2017 among a sample of NICU doctors, nurses, and midwives. A total of 77 participants from Australia and 93 from Poland completed the survey. Overall, from the perspectives of medical and nursing staff, it is apparent that clinical pharmacy practice on the NICU is more established in Australia than in Poland. Only 8.6% of Polish participants reported that a pharmacist worked directly on the NICU in comparison with 87% of Australian participants (P <.001). The main roles performed by pharmacists in Polish NICUs related to the provision of medicines, whereas Australian pharmacists were highly involved in all aspects of pharmacotherapy, particularly in the clinical and education domains. Future efforts should focus on how practice is structured in each country and what support can be implemented from educational, cultural, and legislative levels to enable better pharmacist integration into the NICU therapeutic team.

Geographers, especially those working in developing country contexts have often encountered improvisation because it plays a critical social and cultural role. Engaging with James Scott's (1998) conceptualisation of metis – contextual, practical and flexible skills and knowledge – and techne – universal technical knowledge – this paper furthers the geographical scholarship on the politics of improvisation. The paper makes three main contributions. First, using metis and techne, it provides a new conceptual repertoire for making sense of improvisation. The paper places improvisation at the nexus of metis and techne. Second, it pushes the understanding of the morality of improvisation by attending to the role of relationships of power in morally and materially legitimising improvisations. Third, although states and experts celebrate and actively engage with improvisation, this paper demonstrates that they also create limits and boundaries for improvisation. These limits demonstrate a contradiction in experts' actions. This paper is based on a nine months ethnographic research on two energy projects carried out in 2012-13 in five villages in Bihar, an eastern state of India. It used participant observations, home tours, interviews and group discussions.

This essay utilizes the rich photographic collections of the Herrnhut Archive, Rijksmuseum and Tropenmuseum to explore alternative ways of understanding the colonial Indian labour diaspora, to infuse new meanings into old pictures and to draw upon the reinterpretation of historical images to reframe personal female migration stories from an artistic perspective. This essay presents an overview of the photography of colonial subjects in India and of her diaspora, and discusses the symbolism and representations of selected case studies of individuals and groups in the Dutch colonial territory of Surinam. From this analysis, the author presents the significance of her findings for the evolution of her own work as an Indian woman of diaspora heritage exploring new ways of articulating complex personal and group identities through the medium of exhibitions and installations.

How does decentralization reform affect the provision of basic services, particularly water and sanitation in Ghana? We deal in particular the delivery of water and sanitation, given the importance of water and sanitation. Conclusions are drawn concerning the policy implications for the design and implementation of decentralization reform. The first is the need to ensure that laws establishing service delivery agencies and possible partnership arrangements are consistent with the specific laws that set out the nature decentralization reform. The second policy implication of our study is the need for a conscious implementation plan in support of decentralization laws and policies. The policy implication regards the question of appropriate roles by local government. We have observed that pluralism performs better that distributed monopoly by public utilities. Decentralization reforms should deepen local accountability in the provision of basic services. Finally, assigning leadership, brokerage and oversight roles to local government in the design of decentralization reforms is critical for expanding basic services.

This book deals with peoples' practices, perceptions, emotions and feelings towards aquatic animals, their ecosystems and nature on the early modern Atlantic coasts by addressing exploitation, use, fear, empathy, otherness, and indifference in the relationships established with aquatic environments and resources by Indigenous Peoples and Europeans. It focuses on large aquatic fauna, especially manatees (but also sharks, sea turtles, seals, and others) as they were hunted, consumed, venerated, conceptualised, and recorded by different societies across the early colonial Americas and West Africa. Through a cross-cultural approach drawing on concepts and analytical methods from marine environmental history, the blue humanities and animal studies, this book addresses more-than-human systems where ecologies, geographies, cosmogonies, and cultures are an entangled web of interdependencies.

Immigration and climate change are the cause of heated debates among the German public. From a socio psychological perspective, it is crucial to understand which factors shape and influence opinions and attitudes towards these topics. We proposed the human values as developed by Schwartz (1992) as good determinants of attitudes towards immigration and climate change. The present study also examined how challenge and threat perceptions of either immigration or climate change influenced the relationship between human values, namely conservation and self-transcendence, and attitudes towards immigration, or climate change respectively, as well as attitudes towards institutional and social trust. We assumed that challenge and threat perceptions would moderate the tested relationships. Furthermore, we assumed that left- and right-wing ideologies would moderate the relationships in a similar way as challenge and threat perceptions would. We used data from the European Social Survey (ESS), round 7 and 8, from 2014 (N=3045) and from 2016 (N=2852) and conducted several moderation analyses. Our findings did not give substantial support to our assumptions as most of the moderation effects were either non-significant or very weak. ; A imigração e as mudanças climáticas são a causa de intensos debates entre a sociedade alemã. Propomos os valores humanos desenvolvidos por Schwartz (1992) como bons determinantes de atitudes em relação à imigração e às mudanças climáticas. O presente estudo, assim como as percepções de desafio e ameaça da imigração ou das mudanças climáticas, influenciaram a relação entre os valores humanos, ou seja, conservação e autotranscendência e atitudes em relação à imigração ou mudanças climáticas, bem como as atitudes em relação à confiança institucional e social. Presumimos que as percepções de desafio e ameaça moderariam os relacionamentos testados. Além disso, presume-se que as ideologias de esquerda e de direita moderariam os relacionamentos de maneira semelhante às percepções de desafio e ameaça. Utilizando dados do European Social Survey (ESS), rounds 7 e 8, de 2014 (N = 3045) e de 2016 (N = 2852) e conduzimos várias análises de moderação. As descobertas não deram suporte substancial às suposições, já que a maioria dos efeitos de moderação não foram significativos ou foram muito fracos.

In the preface to Paix et Guerre entre les nations Raymond Aron writes that: "Mon but est de comprendre la logique implicite des relations entre collectivités politiquement organisées." As an effort to comprehend the implicit logic of state relations, Paix et Guerre is clearly one of the most ambitious works to appear in recent years. In terms of sheer scope, it has few—if indeed, any—serious competitors among general treatises on international relations. Moreover, in terms of substantive accomplishments, it is in many respects one of the most impressive works to appear in a long time. It is impressive if only because of the critical function it performs. Few theories of significance directly or indirectly relating to "l'institution belliqueuse" escape Aron's attention and criticism.1Paix et Guerre is impressive for the way in which it seeks to encompass and to organize the disparate materials making up the study of international relations and, in particular, for the manner in which it attempts to comprehend certain behavior— diplomatic-strategic action—from diverse points of view. It is equally impressive for its awareness that the progress of a discipline generally and the utility of comparative study particularly depend on drawing clear and precise distinctions and devising useful classifications. Finally, Paix et Guerre is impressive for the perceptiveness with which it analyzes contemporary international politics. Aron's chapters on the diplomacy and strategy of the nuclear age—"le monde fini"—form a model of political analysis. Not the least of its virtues is the modesty of the conclusions drawn and the disavowal of oracular pretensions. The same modesty characterizes Aron's theoretical endeavors. If a pervasive skepticism is applied to the theories of others, and particularly to "les grandes hypotheses," Aron is almost as skeptical of his own efforts to lay bare "les conditions des choix historiques." In large measure, Paix et Guerre is a sustained and often brilliant effort to demonstrate the limits of our present knowledge. That effort performs a much needed service.
