This chapter presents the findings of the work of the Centre for Sustainable, Healthy and Learning Cities and Neighbourhoods (SHLC) that is funded via UK Research and Innovation as part of the UK Government's Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The chapter is based on case study research conducted in two cities in each of the seven countries in the Global South. The cities are Cape Town and Johannesburg (South Africa), Dar es Salaam and Dodoma (Tanzania), Kigali and Huye (Rwanda), Delhi and Madurai (India), Dhaka and Khulna (Bangladesh), Chongqing and Datong (China) and Manila and Batangas (Philippines). Based on an analysis of data drawn from planning and urban development policy documents in the respective countries over the last two decades, the case studies identify key ideas and policies that have shaped the delivery of public services, especially education and health care. The chapter focusses on four themes: urban inequalities, urban planning policies, understanding health and well-being and learning cities.

This book examines a rapidly emerging new topic in urban settlement patterns: the role of shrinking cities. Much coverage is given to declining fertility rates, ageing populations and economic restructuring as the factors behind shrinking cities, but there is also reference to resource depletion, the demise of single-company towns and the micro-location of environmental hazards. The contributions show that shrinkage can occur at any scale - from neighbourhood to macro-region - and they consider whether shrinkage of metropolitan areas as a whole may be a future trend. The existence and changing of generations in family life, business and politics was a central feature of towns as well as rural societies in earlier times. Even so, it remains understudied by urban historians of the pre-modern period. This book aims to fill some of this gap, containing twelve studies of generations in late medieval and early modern European towns, ranging from the Mediterranean to the Nordic countries, with a time-span from the fourteenth to the early nineteenth century. Dealing with topics like succession and inheritance, family consciousness, as well as relations and conflicts within and between generations, the articles demonstrate the importance and potential of generational studies on pre-modern towns. The book will appeal to anyone who takes an interest in urban social and cultural history, legal and family history in medieval and early modern times.

Cities have worked on the sidelines of international climate negotiations for many years. While recognizing their role as both leading emitters of greenhouse gases and as drivers of climate change policy, the 2018 IPCC-sponsored inaugural Cities and Climate Change Science Conference also underscored the significant lacunae of data about the climate actions of cities and their outcomes. The current study employs meta-analytic methods to explore the climate policies of 217 cities around the world, and the actions they have taken to mitigate their GHG emissions. The data were collected from the official websites of two transnational urban networks for climate change, from an international registry of the climate change actions of various political entities and the corporate sector, and from peer-reviewed research. The analysis is based on five diagnostic categories, all widely-used measures of urban climate policy (e.g., green construction), and six more diagnostic categories that reflect processes of good climate policy (e.g., transparency and participation). Data on the cities' follow-up on their plans (reviews, revisions), and data on changes in their GHG emissions as tangible outcomes were also recorded. Many cities have set emission reduction targets that are pointedly higher than their national governments, and many have begun to implement their climate action plans. But they often encounter obstacles in translating their commitments, whether external (e.g., insufficient funding) or internal (e.g., resistance by interest groups). Networking between cities, particularly networking to improve policy-learning, accompanied the praxis of many of the cities' climate actions. Engagement with residents (e.g., participatory involvement), on the other hand, is a less-favored derivative of climate action plans in most cities. Gathering an internationally renowned group of scholars in urbanization and development studies, this work explores the impact of internal and international migration on cities in the Third World. Vital issues such as demographic trends, economic development, environmental impact, welfare and housing policy are examined across a variety of geographic locations. The book will be an invaluable resource for anyone engaged in policy or programme work in Third World development.

A content analysis of the Leiden Sketchbook (1577–85) addresses two major issues. First, how a stereotype of an Ottoman town was created by sixteenth-century travellers and second, how the social organization of space and integration of formerly Christian towns into the Ottoman system during the period of its greatest expansion was perceived. The comparison of visual sources with travelogues and historiography confirms the historicity and trustworthiness of the drawings. The drawings are revealing when interpreted in the context of the approach of historical anthropology: they illustrate the travelogues and testify to the sensual experience of their author.
