A review symposium on Ashutosh Varshney's Ethnic Conflict and Civic Life: Hindus and Muslims in India (New Haven, CT: Yale U Press, 2001), a comparison of Hindu-Muslim relations in the six Indian cities of Calicut, Lucknow, Surat, Aligarh, Hyderabad, & Ahmedabad. Varshney argues for an integral connection between the structure of civic life & the presence of ethnic violence in a multiethnic society. Following an introduction by Robert L. Hardgrave, Jr., David Laitin focuses on the rural & urban differences in ethnic conflict, emphasizing how Varshney is able to explain the low level of violence in cities where civic engagement is demanded by everyday interaction within economic & social networks. Kanchan Chandra contends that Varshney makes three invaluable contributions to the issue of contemporary ethnic violence: (1) identifying localized variations in the violence pattern, (2) elaborating on the instrumentalist approach to ethnic violence by examining the polarizing role of political elites & the state, & (3) establishing the correlation between high levels of interethnic economic interdependence & low levels of violence. Pradeep Chhibber concentrates on Varshney's success in defining the extent & depth of India's communal violence & in developing a social capital theory to explain the absence of violence in some cities. Varshney responds by warning against parsimonious & microfoundational tendencies approaching the localized nature of his empirical studies & by reiterating the array of human motivations behind the business & social networks that define the violence-resisting quality of civic engagement. What is the state of intimate romantic relationships and marriage in urban China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan? Since the 1980's, the character of intimate life in these urban settings has changed dramatically. While many speculate about the 21st century as Asia's century, this book turns to the more intimate territory of sexuality and marriage-and observes the unprecedented changes in the law and popular expectations for romantic bonds and the creation of new families. Wives, Husbands, and Lovers examines how sexual relationships and marriage are perceived and practiced under new developments within each urban location, including the establishment of no fault divorce laws, lower rates of childbearing within marriage, and the increased tolerance for non-marital and non-heterosexual intimate relationships. The authors also chronicle what happens when states remove themselves from direct involvement in some features of marriage but not others. Tracing how the marital "rules of the game" have changed substantially across the region, this book challenges long-standing assumptions that marriage is the universally preferred status for all men and women, that extramarital sexuality is incompatible with marriage, or that marriage necessarily unites a man and a woman. This book illustrates the wide range of potential futures for marriage, sexuality, and family across these societies.

In the immediate aftermath of September 11, we circulated an essay outlining possible comparisons between the 1980s and 1990s repression of organized crime in Italy and Sicily and the pending repression of the al‐Qaeda network. Distributed in several countries, and as a contribution to the Anthropological Quarterly's reflections on September 11, the essay elicited critical and provocative commentary. Respondents questioned, in particular, our neglect of abuses of civil liberties in the antimafia process, our implied conflation of racketeering with religious extremism, and our positive assessment of the role of citizens' social movements in delegitimating terrorist violence. In this article, we address these and related criticisms, in part through expanding and clarifying the original argument. Our premise at the time, that the rhetoric (and pursuit) of a "war" on terrorism distorts what should be framed as a repressive action against a cellular and networked, violent and secretive organization, is reinforced. In englischer Sprache.Mit Beiträgen von:Jochen von Bernstorff, Timothy L. In order to evaluate the safety of selected commercial spices brands, concentration of lead, mercury and arsenic, as well as moisture and mineral contents were analyzed in samples of dried black and white pepper powders, black, white and green peppercorns, black cumin seeds and ginger powder. Lead (Pb), mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) concentrations in spice samples purchased from local markets in Belgrade were determined, after a microwave digestion of the samples, by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), using the graphite furnace AAS technique (Pb), cold vapor AAS technique (Hg) and hydride generation AAS technique (As). Trace levels of Pb, Hg and As in the selected dried spices samples were in the range 0.10 ppm - 0.79 ppm, 0.01 ppm - 0.10 ppm and 0.01 ppm - 0.51 ppm, respectively. The maximum Pb concentration was determined in the sample of ginger and it was 0.79 ppm, the maximum concentration of Hg was 0.10 ppm, determined in green peppercorns samples, while the maximum concentration of As in powdered black pepper sample was 0.51 ppm. The moisture and mineral contents in the different analyzed spices were in the range 1.70-13.10% and 3.40-6.50%, respectively. According to the obtained results, the concentrations of the analyzed toxic elements, as well as the moisture and mineral content in selected spices, were below the maximum permissible limits declared by the national legislations deemed safe for human consumption.
Using a combination of logit, and OLS regressions we ask if the labour force outcomes for Polish immigrants differ across two immigration policy regimes (Canada and Sweden). Specifically, we compare the employment and earnings prospects of Polish immigrants and their children in Canada and Sweden using data that is similar in quality and timing. We find that in general, Polish immigrants, while facing substantial penalties compared to native-born workers fare better in Canada than in Sweden in terms of employment and income. As expected, second generation Poles fare much better than their immigrant counterparts in terms of employment and earnings differentials and have similar outcomes to the native-born majority in both countries. Membership in the EU fundamentally changed migration flows from Poland. In light of this we also look at how post-2004 Polish migrants have fared in both Canada and Sweden.
Engaging with the acclaimed American sociologist Eliot Freidson's argument about professionalism's 'third logic' (a viable alternative to bureaucracy and consumerism), Dutch, British, French and German contributors to this volume bring together three political and academic debates rarely tackled jointly: professionalism, change, and policy, in the context of the increasing marketization and bureaucratization of healthcare and welfare. As attempts to cope with Europe's increasingly ageing and multicultural societies are being implemented, this first title in a uniquely positioned series provides an exhaustive analysis of the road travelled so far.
Paul Craig's analysis of UK, EU and global administrative law examines the challenges facing each system and reveals the commonalities in and differences between their foundational assumptions. The challenges which they face may be particular to that legal order, endemic to any legal system of administrative law or the result of interaction between the three systems. The inter-relationship between the three levels is important. The legal and practical reality is that developments at one level can have an impact on the other two. Legal doctrine fashioned at the national level may therefore inform developments in EU and global administrative law. The doctrine thus created may then function symbiotically, shaping developments within a domestic legal order. The inter-relationship is equally marked from the regulatory perspective, since many such provisions originate at the global or EU level

Entering the teaching profession is a process influenced by many factors that have an effect on the way the novice teachers, recently graduated from university, perceive and live the first year of their teaching experience. These factors are related to the context: the sort of reception organized by the school management team and teachers; the peer-support and the professionalmaturity of the teacher. This article presents a research about the first year of teaching experience in Catalan public schools of infantile and primary education. The study has foreseen the accomplishment of study cases in five educational centers. Individual and group interviews have been carried out to beginning teachers, their mentors and the school management board. Focus groups with trainersof beginning teachers taking part of an induction program promoted by the Catalan government, have been also carried out and finally interviews to different services of education (inspectors, psychopedagogs and members of resource centers. The results here presented summarize one part of the research, this is the perceptions of teachers, mentors and management board's members. They confirm the necessity to offer an induction program for first year teachers based on daily practice reflection as well as to plan the reception of new teachers by means of a contextualized plan including information on the school organization and curriculum as well as support strategies from expert teachers and themanagement board.
