Against the accepted wisdom that modernization generally brings about increased secularization & a decline in the significance of religion, analyzed here are some religious revival movements & the emergence of new religious organizations in Sweden in the 19th-century, a period of rapid modernization, & their role in the public education system. The process of "functional differentiation" described by secularization theorists is examined in terms of how the societal roles played by religion & religious institutions were redefined, not eradicated. Focus is on changes in compulsory education, particularly in the Swedish folkskola (modern elementary school), demonstrating how it originated & evolved in the 19th century through a new church-state partnership. THIS PAPER ATTEMPTS TO CREATE A DEFINITION OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM WHICH IS ACCEPTABLE TO ALL, AND WHICH CAN BE APPLIED TO OUR WORLD TODAY. THE AUTHOR ANALYZES FREEDOM OF RELIGION IN THE UNITED STATES FROM A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE. HE ALSO REVIEWS THE THREE DOCTRINES WHICH ARE MOST PROMINENTLY INVOKED IN CONTEMPORARY CHURCH-STATE RELATIONS. HE ALSO CRITIQUES THE U.S. SUPREME COURT'S HANDLING OF THE RELIGION CASES OVER THE PAST CENTURY. FINALLY, HE POSITS HIS OWN THEORY DESCRIBING AN ACCURATE FIRST AMENDMENT INTERPRETATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE.
