Different religious groups in Central and Eastern Europe influenced societies in the region after the fall of Communism and continue to play a crucial role in culture, politics, social networks and value transformations. As part of the REVACERN (Religion and Values in Central and Eastern Europe Research Network) project – supported by the EU Sixth Framework Program – more than 70 researchers from 15 countries in the region analyzed and discussed the most important trends in values, religions and religious communities and presented their findings in a comparative way. They tested well-known theories of secularization, nationalism, democracy and pluralism in the colorful region Central and Eastern Europe. This book summarizes their most important findings in seven chapters, addressing religion and its entanglements with geography, values, nationalism, Orthodoxy, education, legal regulation, civil society, social networks, new religious movements and new forms of religiosity. Each chapter also provides a regional overview.
We are still in the early stages of working out what it means for the Canadian state to be both officially secular and supportive of religious pluralism. In this period of uneasy transition, the respective roles of secular and religious norms in shaping public policy are matters of considerable political debate and scholarly attention. The Supreme Court has had a few opportunities to contribute to these debates in recent years. The author discusses three significant 2004 rulings on religious freedoms: Syndicate Northcrest v. Amselem, the Same-Sex Marriage Reference and Congregation des témoins de Jéhovah de St-Jérôme-Lafontaine v. Lafontaine (Village). While the majority in Lafontaine avoided the religious freedom issue, Lebel J.'s dissent introduced the language of religious neutrality into the Court's jurisprudence and his thoughtful discussion of its implications ought to contribute to future debates. The Court's opinion in the Same-Sex Marriage Reference was commendable by so clearly stating that religious freedom is in no way threatened by the federal government's Proposed Act (Bill C-38 in Parliament). The move from a definition of civil marriage rooted in Christendom to one aimed at fulfilling the secular ideals of the Charter is consistent with the state's duty of religious neutrality, and the Court's opinion played a valuable role in removing any legal objections to its attainment. Justice Iacobucci's opinion for the majority in Amselem is the Court's most ambitious contribution to the jurisprudence on freedom of religion since the Big M ruling. His emphasis on personal choice may pave the way for the development of a broad conception of freedom of conscience in the future.

Environmental protection and conservation of natural resources have become core concern of governance irrespective of its model. Debates and efforts are on since long back especially when scientists identified the negative impacts of human activities on the environment. Domestic and international bodies ventured upon to design measures in order to adopt policies, legislation and future plans conducive to the natural properties. Growing population and the unbridled exploitation of natural resources are accepted phenomenon now days. Consequently depletion of environment and its preservation cannot be controlled by these extraneous measures as hypocritical man could not altered the situation positively, thus, internal conscience became the only option. A theological implication of environmental ecology is now becoming crucial in order to testify the measures and its appropriateness. Religions do have the answer for the dichotomy of environment and development as the limit on human conduct is extremely desired. The failure of external regulatory mechanism forced us to look at different option and obvious shelter one finds in ethical component of individual's behavior. Religious mandates and dictates may prove fruitful in this regard and eventually Hindu Religious texts have enough to say in this regard. Present paper very briefly ventured upon to discuss the texts and messages therein aiming at sustaining environmental properties. It also discusses how we treat and regard natural properties in our daily life.
There is very little scientific literature that considers the relationship between religions and an integral concept of Sustainable Development, including its three dimensions (social, economic and environmental), as proposed in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It was necessary to conduct a study of this kind, with the aim of making visible and show with concrete data, the contribution of religions to the integral sustainability. This paper presents an empirical research in which we intend to make visible the actions performed by religious organizations in Catalonia, that have been contributing to the Sustainable Development. The study is the launching of the Sustainability and Religions Watch. This study about the contribution of religious organizations to the Sustainable Development has been made by a mixed method with two techniques for data collection: firstly, has counted the presence of indicators linked to the priority areas of Sustainable Development, from the analysis of the content of the websites of religious organizations (quantitative analysis). Moreover, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted to representatives of religious organizations (qualitative analysis). The study of the contribution of religions to the Sustainable Development opens new doors to interfaith dialogue because it is based on elements that are common between different beliefs. This dialogue is a path that can effectively contribute to peace. ; info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

(DÜI-DOI)

Indonesians have different backgrounds; they can live in harmony and side by side without any friction and conflict due to cooperation between religions in an excellent multicultural frame. The research approach is library research. The primary data source used is the Qur'an with the thematic method, while secondary data is in books, journals, and documentation. The study findings show; (1) the cooperation verses in the Qur'an, fifteen verses have the Madaniyah status, and seven verses have the Makiyah status. These verses are grouped into three things: cooperation based on Islamic brotherhood, cooperation based on ukhuwah wathaniyah or nationality, and cooperation based on ukhuwah basyariah human-based. Somebody can carry out a partnership based on ukhuwah basyariah in a multicultural context can be carried out in the political, economic, cultural, and social fields. (2) The hadiths related to the cooperation verses are found in Sahih Muslim numbers 2704 and 2705, Sahih Bukhari numbers 2124 and 2811, Sunan Nasai numbers 3867 and 3871. Based on the transmission line, the hadith is agreed to be a valid hadith even though there are differences in the text, but the meaning has the same substance.

Religion and politics are never far from the headlines, but their relationship remains complex and often confusing. In this fifth edition of Religion and Politics in America, the authors offer a lively, accessible, and balanced treatment of religion in American politics. They explore the historical, cultural, and legal contexts that underlie religious political engagement while also highlighting the pragmatic and strategic political realities that religious organizations and people face. Incorporating the best and most up-to-date scholarship, the authors assess the politics of Roman Catholics; evangelical, mainline, and African American Protestants; Jews; Muslims and other conventional and not-so-conventional American religious movements. The author team also examines important subjects concerning religion and its relationship to gender, race/ethnicity, and class. The fifth edition has been revised to include the 2012 elections, in particular Mitt Romney's candidacy and Mormonism, as well as a fuller assessment of the role of religion in President Obama's first term. In-depth treatment of core topics, contemporary case studies, and useful focus-study boxes, provides students with a real understanding of how religion and politics relate in practice and makes this fifth edition essential reading for courses in political science, religion, and sociology departments.

Placing Nature furthers the dialogue on religion, ethics, and the environment by exploring three interrelated concepts: to recreate, to replace and to restore. This book self-consciously reflects on the intersections of environmental philosophy, environmental theology, and religion and ecology, stressing the importance of how place interprets us and how we interpret place. This work is a unique volume in its serious engagement with theology and religious studies on the issues of ecological restoration and the meaning of place.
