Historical European martial arts (HEMA) have to be considered an important part of our common European cultural heritage. Studies within this field of research have the potential to enlighten the puzzle posed by past societies, for example in the field of history, history of science and technology, or fields related to material culture.
The military aspects of history are still to be considered among the most popular themes of modern times, generating huge public interest. In the last few decades, serious HEMA study groups have started appearing all over the world – focusing on re-creating a lost martial art. The terminology "Historical European Martial Arts" therefore also refers to modem-day practices of ancient martial arts. Many of these groups focus on a "hands-on" approach, thus bringing practical experience and observation to enlighten their interpretation of the source material. However, most of the time, they do not establish inquiries based on scientific research, nor do they follow methodologies that allow for a critical analysis of the findings or observations.
This paper will therefore propose and discuss, ideas on how to bridge the gap between enthusiasts and scholars; since their embodied knowledge, acquired by practice, is of tremendous value for scientific inquiries and scientific experimentation. It will also address HEMA practices in the context of modern day acceptance of experimental (or experiential) processes and their value for research purposes and restoration of an historical praxis. The goal is therefore to sketch relevant methodological and theoretical elements, suitable for a multidisciplinary approach, to HEMA, where the "H" for "historical" matters.
Todestag; 2010 - H. G. Adlers 100. Geburtstag. ; The result of my extensive research project is the first comprehensive study on the life and work of H. G. Adler, an important member of the circle around Elias and Veza Canetti, Erich Fried etc., whose ground-breaking scholarly work long overshadowed his reputation as a creative writer. Adler, a German-Jewish writer, born in Prague in 1910, was the inmate of various National Socialist concentration camps (Theresienstadt, Auschwitz) during the Second World War and lived in exile in London from 1947 until his death in 1988. Both as a scholar and as a creative writer, this prolific author is one of the most interesting and most versatile personalities in postwar history. In addition to publishing seminal works on the Holocaust, he left behind an important and to a large extent unpublished body of work, consisting of narrative prose, poetry and drama as well as scholarly articles and books on history, sociology, politics, psychology, language and literature, music, arts, philosophy, theology and Jewish studies. The works of H. G. Adler address central contemporary concerns, cover a large number of areas of interest (European cultural and intellectual history, 20th century German literature, exile studies, Holocaust research etc.) and shall thus - so I hope - attract considerably more attention in the future. This monograph attempts to close a major gap in exile studies that has often been complained about in the past. Its most important topical areas are: H. G. Adler's biography, Theresienstadt (Terezín), exile in England, the development and interdependence of scholarly work and literature, H. G. Adler's position amongst writers such as Karl Kraus, Franz Kafka, George Orwell, Elias Canetti and W. G. Sebald, H. G. Adler as Franz Baermann Steiner's literary executor, H. G. Adler's position amongst London émigrés, H. G. Adler and Austria (despite his exile in England, Adler throughout his life remained closely associated with Austrian culture). This study focuses on Adler's most important and best known works "Theresienstadt 1941-1945" and "Die verheimlichte Wahrheit", books and articles like "Die Dichtung der Prager Schule" and "Der Kampf gegen die 'Endlösung der Judenfrage'", which have hitherto been neglected by academic research, the voluminous autobiographically structured or autobiographically influenced novels "Panorama", "Eine Reise" and "Die unsichtbare Wand" as well as numerous unpublished texts, documents and photographs from Adler's literary estate. It is rounded off by a complete bibliography of H. G. Adler's publication from 1947 to 1988. The time for a monograph about H. G. Adler is ideal: 2008 - 20th anniversary of H. G. Adler's death; 2010 - H. G. Adler's 100th birthday.

; On October 5, 2018, Chile commemorated the 30th anniversary of the plebiscite which brought an end to Augusto Pinochet's military regime (1973-1990), and marked another milestone in the country's process of democratization. Drawing on this context, this paper analyzes the foreign policy of the United States towards Chile between 1985 and 1988, addressing its influence on the Chilean political process, through an analysis of U.S. documents and archives from different agencies and government officials. The paper concludes that the administration of Ronald Reagan (1981-1989), working through the U.S. ambassador in Chile, Harry G. Barnes (1985-1988), played a decisive role in promoting a gradual transition to institutional democracy, a transition that removed Augusto Pinochet as head of the State, excluded the radical left, and guaranteed a neoliberal economic system and the very stability of the political process.
This article examines current trends in the changing concept of the hero in recent Ukrainian cinema and the related tendency to neglect authentic Ukrainian culture on account of the pervasive influence of Western traditions in cinema. The article employs various, academic methods of art criticism: literary and film analysis, comparison, synthesis, analogy and typologisation. Analysing several films from the period of independent Ukraine, Cyborgs: Heroes Never Die (2017, dir. Akhtem Seitablayev), Sniper. The White Raven (2022, dir. Marian Bushan) and Klondike (2022, dir. Maryna Er Gorbach), the authors show that the depiction of Ukrainian film heroes depends on contemporary local events. The contemporary hero of Ukrainian cinema emerges as an ambiguous figure.
Abstract: This article analyzes the function of the archival aesthetic found in the works of prominent contemporary Lebanese artists, particularly the manipulation and use of found documents as part of a new visual narrative. Unlike other interpretations of postmodern art in which found documents are a major component, Lebanese artists subordinate the archive (as both object and practice) to the speculative praxis of arriving at a fictive historiography with archival material. As the article will show, this tendency is mimetic of both a contemporary historiographical problematic particular to Lebanon as well as a product of a condition of ongoing forms of violence.
The author takes up the problem of the negation of authorities in mass society. She points to their significance so far and the premises of their contemporary negation. Not without significance in this case is the issue of rejecting higher values in favour of the pragmatisation of life and the formation of a mass society, whose main principle is mediocrity. The aim of the considerations is to indicate the manifestations of contemporary processes resulting in the negation of authorities of an axiological nature, and the contempt for higher values. They are reflected in such areas of culture as science, art, politics and religion.
Aesthetic cosmopolitanism is conceptualized here as a cultural condition in which late modern ethno-national cultural uniqueness is associated with contemporary cultural forms like film and pop-rock music, and as such it is produced from within the national framework. The social production of aesthetic cosmopolitanism is analyzed through elaborations on Bourdieu's field theory, as an outcome of the intersection of and interplay between global fields of art and fields of national culture. A sociological explanation for the emergence of aesthetic cosmopolitanism is proposed. It focuses on claims by social sectors within national contexts for status and recognition of their own contemporary cultural uniqueness.
This Afterword is a discussion of commentary and criticism of my books, The Moral Economy of the Peasant (1976), Weapons of the Weak (1985), Domination and the Arts of Resistance (1990), and Seeing Like a State (1998). I examine the relation of moral economies to globalization, and hegemony to power and resistance, in agrarian societies and in contemporary U.S. politics. I debate contemporary neoliberal projects of governance in extractive, enclave economies and in current development practices in Indonesia. I question the use and misuse of high modernism as a term in my work. I discuss neoliberal internationalism and the immanent project of "harmonizing" institutional orders throughout poor countries.
