Beginning in narrative re-evaluated daily from classrooms inside prison walls, this article further explores cultural, ethical, and social values of teaching college courses inside the wall. Interrogating public discourse over what Eric Schlosser terms the 'prison -industrial complex' arrogates subsequent considerations. Prison-building became a growth industry, even as prevailing political response to prisoners themselves became increasingly censorious and unforgiving. Traditional American culture preaches redemption but relishes abasement, promises forgiveness but refuses forgetting. Carefully examining further questions about humanistic discourse as a possible locus for radicalization, we finally confront how the prisoners' situation reflects rather than deflects traditional expectations. This article attempts to find a rationale for South Africa's multibillion-dollar arms deal given the absence of any conventional military threat & despite the overwhelming need to manage the HIV/AIDS pandemic as a far more salient threat to both South African & regional security. Culture, identity, & norms help to illustrate the compulsion to acquire weapons as a demonstration of a state's symbolic power, & as an important pursuit of foreign policy. This article looks at regional discrimination against daughters in China. To see where and why this discrimination occurs, it considers a number of demographic variables, such as infant and child mortality by sex as well as sex ratios of populations in East, South-East, and South Asia. It refutes the idea that rigid population control is the main cause of skewed sex ratios. An amalgam of cultural and economic factors are seen as the main contributing causes including a lack of institutionalised old age support from the state and a culture that gives the main responsibility for this to sons. Choice of second-person pronouns can shed light on the intersection of language, personality, and culture. In modern Norway a change has occurred in little more than a generation through which the polite forms De, Dem/Dykk, and Deres/Dykkar have been replaced, in all except commercial, governmental, or ultra-polite speech, by the familiar forms du, deg/dae, and din. In Brown and Gilman's terms, this change indicates that the dimension of solidarity is more important than that of power in modern Norwegian sociolinguistics, the exact opposite of what the case appears to have been with an earlier, similar change in early modern English.

This article attempts a preliminary exploration of the evolving dimensions & underlying subtleties of multiculturalism for social work practice in Greece, particularly in the region of Thrace. It is based on a pilot study with a group of social workers, who disclose their experience & attitudes through accounts of practice. The central argument developed is that, although it is important for professionals to be aware of cultural differences, it might also be dangerous to rely too much on the importance of culture without considering structural elements such as poverty & discrimination which lead to social exclusion. 31 References. This account of the induction ceremony for Buddhist monks was included as Appendix V in Michael Symes, An Acount of an Embassy to the Kingdom of Ava, Sent by the Governor-General of India in the Year 1795 (London: W. Bulmer & Co., 496-500). Symes, then a major in the 76th Regiment, made numerous valuable observations on Burmese culture, society, government, and history. While it is clear that he did consult the accounts of other visitors to Burma, most of his material was derived from first-hand observation or from material provided by Burmese acquaintances, and the following account was likely derived from the latter.

Vincent Peloso's new edited volume, with thirteen empirical essays and three synthetic chapters, positions itself in an ongoing debate within labor history. Peloso argues in the introduction that using identity as an organizing theme springs from "the historian's turn from economics to culture in the study of Latin American labor history" (xiii). In a 1990 article Ronald Chilcote lamented that "classes and class struggle are being displaced by an emphasis on political pluralism, political organizations, and interest groups." However, as political scientist Kenneth Roberts observes in the volume's final chapter, recent years have seen "a modest revival of interest in class relations and class actors in Latin American scholarship" (324).

Draws on the so-called "crisis of masculinity" experienced by males in today's rapidly changing world. The decline of traditional industries and the communities that grew around them has destabilized what was once an organized context for working-class male culture. The decline of community and the emergence of individualized "lifestyle" consumerism pose serious questions about social order and the maintenance of civilized social interactions. Although the fine ethnographic details of these masculine identities have yet to be fully explored, it is possible to present some tentative suggestions about the growing attraction of instrumentalism, violence, and criminality in socially excluded micro-communities in postindustrial Britain.
