"The book is a new explanation of the decline in agricultural productivity in developing countries, transcending beyond the conventional approaches to understanding productivity using agricultural inputs and factors of production. It brings in the role of formal and informal institutions that govern transactions, property rights and accumulation. The volume addresses the misalignment of agricultural productivity with crop intensity and defines in terms of quantity of inputs, quality of mechanisation and technological progress, and degree of ensuring sustainability of ecosystem and biodiversity. The narrative and empirics present a comprehensive, well-balanced lens to perceive agrarian transition in developing countries. It lays out the dynamics of contemporary agrarian transition, starting from the shifts in land relations, productivity and class relations to present-day challenges to sustainability in agriculture. It argues that the existing process of accumulation has resulted in a non-sustainable agriculture because of market failures, caused by asymmetries of power, diseconomies of scale and unstable property rights, resulting in arrested productivity growth. The exploration of theoretical apparatuses through empirical validations reveals that agrarian transition should be understood in relation to the wider (non-agrarian) economic development in society, as political settlement and primitive accumulation permit (inhibit) property rights being re-allocated in growth-enhancing directions."

This book explores a topic that historians of philosophy have so far neglected almost completely: debates about the morality of slavery in eighteenth-century North America and Europe. Author Julia Jorati pays particular attention to the role that race plays in these debates. Each of the five chapters covers intriguing and philosophically important texts about slavery and race from a specific geographic region: North America, Scotland, England, France, and lastly, the Netherlands and Germany. The book--and a companion volume also by Jorati on slavery and race in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries--will serve as a resource for scholars, instructors, and students of philosophy and neighboring disciplines.

Based on an extensive literature review, in-depth interviews, fieldwork, and anecdotal evidence, this text examines China's engagement with East Africa (notably Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda) and considers these relationships through the lens of history, diplomacy, education, trade, media, cultural exchanges, and infrastructure. It probes the sentiments of pessimism, optimism, and pragmatism to explore perceptions about China in East Africa Africa. China's ancient connection to the East African coast, as well as other incidents of contact in the past, are analyzed from the viewpoint of the deployment of Chinese soft power capital in current times. The book notably examines the significant role China is playing in the construction of new infrastructure and housing throughout East Africa and addresses China's involvement in the natural resources sector and the political debate surrounding the construction of gas and oil pipelines, its investment in the tourism sector, in the news media and information and communication technology sectors as well as in educational and cultural programs

Die Klimawende kann nur mit den Bürger*innen gemeinsam gelingen – nicht gegen sie. Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes zeigen hierfür Wege auf. Der Band stellt die Ergebnisse des Projektes "Politik und Recht erleben, Zukunft mitgestalten – Potentiale und Grenzen der Bürger*innenbeteiligung bei der Klimawende" und das Projekt selbst vor. Dabei stehen die Bürger*innen selbst im Zentrum. Auf der Grundlage von rechts- und politikwissenschaftlichen Impulsen haben Bürger*innen Vorschläge insbesondere dazu erarbeitet, wie Beteiligung an klimarelevanten Entscheidungen verbessert werden kann. In der Summe der Beiträge entsteht ein Dialog zwischen der Sichtweise der Bürger*innen, rechts- und politikwissenschaftlichen Analysen sowie den Perspektiven von fachlich einschlägigen Praktiker*innen.

"This book provides a post-Covid recovery strategy that is based on all aspects of health, but also addresses the ever-greater threat from global warming. Health and sustainability are interlocked. More than other European nations, we favour libertarian values over social equity, privatized public services and lower taxes that reduce those services. From fair-minded pragmatism, we have descended into dogma, incompetence and intolerance. Using the government's 5 guiding principles for a sustainable future, the book suggests how to improve distinct aspects of health: personal health through more preventive medicine; environmental health with lower transport and household emissions; economic health through local (rather than global) production of goods and services; social health by reducing gross health and wealth inequalities; and political health through strategic commitment, fair taxes (a bedroom tax just on the poor?) and more devolution. We need to think local, act local and act now."

Wie wirken sich fürsorgerische Zwangsmaßnahmen auf die Töchter und Söhne betroffener Menschen aus? Auf der Grundlage biografischer Interviews beschreibt der Sammelband die Folgen multipler Gewalterfahrungen für die Zweitgeneration und deren Anstrengungen, eine Betroffenheit in der dritten Generation zu verhindern. Über die schädigenden Auswirkungen auf die Nachkommen war bislang in der Schweiz nichts bekannt. Die Autorinnen und Autoren zeigen, dass die Zweitgeneration unter Schweigen, Nähe-Distanz Problemen und Gewalt im nahen Sozialraum litt. Sie durchbrachen das Schweigen jedoch, bauten sich früh ein autonomes Leben auf und setzen sich privat und beruflich für das Wohl anderer Menschen ein. Die Autorinnen und Autoren des Sammelbandes haben über drei Jahre hinweg gemeinsam geforscht und mit Konzepten und Methoden aus der Sozialen Arbeit, Sozialpädagogik, Sozialanthropologie, Bildungssoziologie und Psychologie die transgenerationale Weitergabe fremdplatzierungsbezogener Traumata analysiert.
