Australian Higher Education
The heavy reliance of Australian universities on international student tuition has been exposed by the pandemic and, in particular, the federal government's closure of international borders. This has prevented a significant number of students from entering the country to commence or continue their studies at Australian universities, leading to a reduction in income and precipitating a financial crisis. Some universities have adopted a longer-term, strategic response to this crisis, while others are struggling to survive.

Ethologies of Education

This essay offers a "version" of Vinciane Despret's "ethology of ethology" through close engagement with the concepts Despret constructs in What Would Animals Say if We Asked the Right Questions? Reading Despret with other thinkers associated with feminist science studies, the essay sketches Despret's critique of reductive animal science, and her corresponding work—often collaborative—to find more open, risky ways of researching animal behavior, including the behavior of the human animals we call "scientists." The distinction between control-driven work in laboratories and the more anecdotal observations she finds in some ethology and anthropology leads Despret to propose a certain ethics of asking questions and listening to answers that Snaza proposes could guide a different, more risky approach to educational research.

Kohei Saito's Karl Marx's Ecosocialism: Capitalism, Nature, and the Unfinished Critique of Political Economy shows convincingly that Marx's ideas about the interaction between humanity and nature did not arrive fully formed, but arose from his rigorous engagement with science and philosophy. His insights still offer unparalleled tools to understand capitalism's current assault on the environment.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.

Firearms in Higher Education
In recent years, active shooter incidents have taken the lives of many innocent students, faculty, and staff in the school system. In the past 13 years alone, there has been over 160 such incidents in the U.S. (Blair, Martaindale, & Nichols, 2014). In an attempt to combat these situations, society has started the legislature process of passing or trying to pass laws allowing for students and staff to carry firearms on college and university campuses. The process shows a hope of reducing the number of casualties and the time it takes for law enforcement to arrive. Although the theory does seem to make sense, what is not looked at are the issues that may arise from allowing such measures to be passed. These issues include students, barely adults, now being allowed to carry guns on campus and in dorms. Society must take a closer look at these issues and understand why it would be more important to push stricter gun laws and provide more training for law enforcement to handle these situations. Officers are already in the stages of learning new techniques and strategies to combat active shooter situations, such as ALERRT training. This type of training will assist in the foundation people already have in handling these types of situations. Officers will be better equipped to respond and give training to the public, in order to better prepare citizens. If society can take more time to not react, it may better help all the issues and see that firearms should not be allowed on higher educational campuses.

Politics of Education
