In India, where energy access is limited, how does the public react to the government's inability to provide citizens with basic energy services, such as electricity and clean cooking fuel? We answer this question using a survey conducted in two rural villages of Uttar Pradesh. First, we examine the association between a respondent's opinion on state intervention and policy failure. Specifically, we focus on whether people who believe in state intervention are likely to have lower levels of satisfaction with the government's energy access policies. Second, we examine the link between policy failure and the likelihood that people consider a political candidate's energy views in voting. We find that people's preference for government intervention has a negative effect on satisfaction levels with government policies, and that people who blame the government for policy failures are less likely to take a political candidate's energy policies into account when voting.

Biomass sustainability criteria were introduced in the UK following the EU Renewable Energy Directive. Criteria are now applicable to solid biomass and biogas, however because it is not mandatory criteria can be adapted by member states with the risk of different interpretation. Operators are required to report greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for every MJ of energy produced. This paper provides a rigorous analysis of the current GHG emissions accounting methodology for biogas facilities to assess expected compliance for producers. This research uses data from operating CHP and biomethane facilities to calculate GHG emissions using the existing methodology and Government calculator. Results show that whilst many biogas facilities will meet GHG thresholds, as presently defined by Government, several operators may not comply due to methodological uncertainties and chosen operating practices. Several GHG accounting issues are identified which need to be addressed so the biogas industry achieves its reporting obligations and is represented objectively with other bioenergy technologies. Significant methodological issues are highlighted; including consignment definition, mass balance allocation, measurement of fugitive methane emissions, accounting for digestate co-products, fossil fuel comparators, and other accounting problems. Recommendations are made to help address the GHG accounting issues for policy makers and the biogas industry.

AbstractThe high energy consumption and carbon footprints have raised environmental and sustainable concerns of green investors and policymakers. This study explores comovements between three green and socially responsible financial assets, S&P global clean energy index (GCEI), S&P green bonds index (GB), DJ sustainability world index (DJSWI) and four cryptocurrency uncertainty/attention indices cryptocurrency policy uncertainty index, Central Bank Digital Currencies Uncertainty Index, Central Bank Digital Currencies Attentions Index and Index of Cryptocurrency Environmental Attention using the bivariate wavelet coherence approach. The findings show that GCEI, GB, DJSWI returns have consistent positive comovement with all cryptocurrency uncertainty/attention indices in the medium‐term, suggesting their time‐varying leading role. Evidence of negative coherences shows that higher cryptocurrency uncertainties/attentions lead to lower green financial asset returns, reflecting the adverse impact of higher uncertainties/attention on the trust of green and sustainable investors. The above empirical findings offer up‐to‐date insights for guiding policymakers, and regulators, enabling them in environmental policy development. Furthermore, socially responsible investors can make better investment judgments by considering the environmental concerns in the cryptocurrency marketplaces.

AbstractHydrogen, as a clean energy carrier, is of great potential to be an alternative fuel in the future. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is hailed as the most desired technology for high purity hydrogen production and self-consistent with volatility of renewable energies, has ignited much attention in the past decades based on the high current density, greater energy efficiency, small mass-volume characteristic, easy handling and maintenance. To date, substantial efforts have been devoted to the development of advanced electrocatalysts to improve electrolytic efficiency and reduce the cost of PEM electrolyser. In this review, we firstly compare the alkaline water electrolysis (AWE), solid oxide electrolysis (SOE), and PEM water electrolysis and highlight the advantages of PEM water electrolysis. Furthermore, we summarize the recent progress in PEM water electrolysis including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in the acidic electrolyte. We also introduce other PEM cell components (including membrane electrode assembly, current collector, and bipolar plate). Finally, the current challenges and an outlook for the future development of PEM water electrolysis technology for application in future hydrogen production are provided.

Line of sight to the full economic potential of Smart Manufacturing requires business, leadership, market and infrastructure realignments for the "democratization" of "smart" business, technology, operational and workforce data practices industry-wide. Access and the ability to effectively use operational data in cyber operations (Operational Technologies, OT) that are enabled by Information Technologies (IT) and the knowhow to deploy Smart Manufacturing solutions are therefore increasingly important to small, medium and large manufacturers, providers, integrators and innovators alike, but increasingly constrained with today's manufacturing infrastructure practices. Addressing democratization, breaking through barriers and transforming manufacturing to a new data centric orientation are key objectives for CESMII, the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, the third Institute sponsored by the Department of Energy and the ninth out of the fifteen Manufacturing USA national institutes (see https://www.cesmii.org).

One of the cleanest energy sources on the planet, nuclear energy is recognized for its great potential as a dual-use technology (with both civil and military application). The complexity of nuclear development also results in an intense spin-off process, generating benefits in the social, scientific, and industrial fields and contributing to projects in different sectors. The objective of this paper is to present the Brazilian Navy's Nuclear Program, its history and its main aspects. Moreover, it aims to outline the relevance of the program to the Brazilian nuclear sector and to the national defense industrial base. For this purpose, the text is mostly based on official data and literature review, focusing especially on nuclear development since the 1940s. Its results allow us to conclude, in particular, that the development of this technology would also enable Brazil to remain in the group of countries with high nuclear capacity as well as, in the future, to become an exporter of nuclear fuel. Finally, it is important to understand it as a long-term state program and to ensure its maintenance and continuity, given its current advanced stage and its effects on Brazil's development.

Conference Proceedings ; Renewable energy systems are receiving more and more attention, as governments and industry seek to reduce fossil fuel usage and provide more clean energy. PV systems fall into this category, and are especially sought after in countries that enjoy sufficient annual solar radiation. It has been scientifically proven that both the tilt and orientation angles, along with variable atmospheric conditions, impact significantly on the optimum output power of PV modules used in these systems. The purpose of this paper is to present a simplified measuring approach to validate this fact when considering the tilt angle. Research is not always about discovering new aspects, but also involves using various scientific methods to test and retest current findings. This simplified measuring approach is a re-test of current findings that indicates that a PV module with a high tilt angle starts operating earlier than a PV module with a lower tilt angle for winter periods in South Africa. However, the simplified approach costs less than 25% of traditional measuring approaches, providing a visual dimension and perspective in validating current research findings.

This paper takes an integrated analysis approach to explore the options available for a UK homeowner to reduce their domestic emissions to the level advised by the UK governments Committee on Climate Change of 20% of those associated with a typical house in 1990. It uses proven thermal models of a typical house and low carbon heating systems to estimate the emissions associated with domestic heating and electricity consumption from a number of combinations of low carbon micro generation technologies. The amount of additional low carbon electricity needed to offset these emissions to the desired level was then calculated. The capacity of photo voltaic panels needed to generate it was then estimated. This has been done over a range of different grid carbon intensities and the resulting configurations have been subjected to energy analysis and financial appraisal. An environmental life cycle assessment was also undertaken to see if there were any unacceptable environmental consequences of an owner adopting any of the options. The research shows that in all cases operational GHG target can be met, but that emissions associated with the production of the systems is variable, meaning that with current technology a 25% house is more likely. It has also been shown that given current subsidies the installation of some of the proposed systems should be financially attractive to the home owner. ?

The objective of this study is to identify lessons for improving cookstoves in Bangladesh through an evaluation of existing programs, the international experience on improved stoves, and the lessons from successes in the sanitation sector. Bangladesh's new renewable energy policy endorses creating a better environment for renewable energy technologies and promoting market development for improved cookstoves (Government of Bangladesh 2009). This study supports this policy direction by examining possible strategies to move forward the development of markets for improved stoves in Bangladesh. The study consists of several components: a national review of household energy programs; an evaluation of national sanitation programs; and an examination of improved cookstove programs from around the world, including China, Guatemala, Haiti, Mongolia, Nepal, and Uganda. The study is based on published literature, consultations with organizations throughout Bangladesh, site visits, and structured discussions with beneficiaries and other stakeholders.

Farmer group of Bendrong Hamlet has conducted a series of reforestation activities to cope with landslides and secure the clean water supply to all villages. Although the attempt has run well, many problems have begun to arise, such as people's land being sold. The buyers are outsiders, thereby deviating from the specified principles of conservation and people's awareness of conservation activity decreasing. These problems should be solved immediately, recalling Malang Regency is vulnerable to landslide disaster incidence. The research objectives were to reconstruct the conservation conceptualization model and improve the community-based conservation model using a qualitative research method with a case study approach and interactive data analysis technique. The conservation undertaken by people in Bendrong Hamlet divides into two: green and energy conservations. Green conservation conduct through people planting forests with forestry plants and agroforestry plants below it—energy conservation conduct by processing cow manure into biogas as alternative energy. Besides, the conservation activity is intended to be intended for environmental factors and intended as an economic factor obtained from green and energy conservation activities. Social institutions' participation, legitimacy, and government, private, and community's participation, either individually or in the group, are essential to the performance of conservation activity as the attempt of conserving natural resource; also, economic activity should be included in the conservation activity to result in an effective and sustainable community conservation activity.

The increasing demand for energy worldwide and the resulting environmental impacts of fossil fuels forced many countries to turn to renewable energy resources as a clean and sustainable alternative. More than a third of Europe's binding renewable energy source target of 20% by 2020 will come from solid biomass for electricity and heating according to the National Renewable Energy Action Plans submitted by member states of the European Union (EU) to the European Commission. To achieve this goal long-term yield studies in renewable energy plants are important to determine mean annual biomass and energy yield, and CO2 emission. Field experiments worldwide and also in Europe have demonstrated that Miscanthus, a fast-growing C4 rhizomatous grass can produce some of the highest biomass and energy yield per hectare of all potential energy plants. Miscanthus is a plant that originates from the southern slopes of the Himalayas. It was bred for the Hungarian climatic conditions in 2006 under the name of Miscanthus sinensis 'Tatai' (MsT). The species has high frost and drought tolerance and high energy value. This is why there is growing demand for the biomass (lignocellulose) produced by growing this plant. The biomass, produced from the high yield energy reed, can be transported to power plants in large quantities, in forms of bales. Its household consumption is not yet significant. This study presents the external features, characteristics, propagation and plantation process of MsT energy reed. The study also demonstrates the harvest technology of the species worked out between 2009–2012 in Tata, Hungary and the options of supplying to biomass power stations.

Energy consumption is a prerequisite for economic growth especially in developing countries, and its demand is expected to increases as population increases. The quality of institutions is also germane for tourism development, as weak institutions may discourage the arrival of tourists into a country. This study examines the asymmetric impact of energy consumption (EC) and institutional quality (IQ) on tourist arrival (TA) in Pakistan for the period 1984–2017 by employing the non‐linear autoregressive distributive lag model. The bounds test result reveals a long‐run relationship among the variables used in the model. The findings of the study suggest an asymmetric relationship among EC, IQ and TA. The results imply that an improvement in IQ will increase TA. From the results, it can be said that reducing environmental pollution by switching into clean sources of energy may have an indirect positive effect on the tourism industry. Therefore, policies for enhancing TA, quality institutions and curtailing environmental degradation were suggested.

One of the main purposes of this partnership is the coordination and implementation of actions that promote the conservation of the renewable natural resources of Guatemala, mantaining the ecologic balance and quality of the environment.
