This paper reflects the tension between humanistic education and education for income, against the background of Martha Nussbaum's argument in Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities, in the spirit of thinking of the status of education in democratic societies. The general trend in most countries has been considering economic growth as the main objective of the society, i.e., we must seek, above all, increasing the total wealth of the nation, and this goal must devote all State and society efforts in general. From this perspective, when it comes to thinking of an education system, the following questions arise: How to prepare young people for life? How to train people to understand cultural differences and critical thinking? Do values and moral sentiments really matter? And ultimately, how does the education system respond when facing deviant social practices in environments that explicitly favor economic growth and the instrumentalization of knowledge? And what pathological behaviors may be associated with this view? Therefore, if education is for people, we need to understand the problems we face in the process of transformation of students into citizens of democracy. ; El presente trabajo reflexiona la tensión entre educación humanista y educación para la renta, teniendo como trasfondo la argumentación de Martha Nussbaum en Sin fines de lucro. Por qué la democracia necesita de las humanidades, con el ánimo de pensar el estado de la educación en las sociedades democráticas. La tendencia general en la mayoría de países ha sido considerar el crecimiento económico como el objetivo fundamental de la sociedad, es decir, que se debe buscar, ante todo, el incremento de la riqueza total de la nación, y a este objetivo deben dedicarse todos los esfuerzos del Estado y de la sociedad en general. Desde esta perspectiva, cuando se trata de pensar un sistema de educación, cabe preguntarse: ¿cómo prepara a las personas jóvenes para la vida? ¿Cómo forma en la comprensión de las diferencias culturales y en el pensamiento crítico? ¿interesan los valores y los sentimientos morales? En últimas, ¿cómo responde el sistema educativo frente a prácticas sociales desviadas en entornos donde se privilegia de forma explícita el crecimiento económico y la instrumentalización del saber? ¿Qué conductas patológicas podrían asociarse con esta concepción? Por tanto, si la educación es para las personas, necesitan entenderse los problemas que se afrontan en el proceso de transformación de los estudiantes en ciudadanos de la democracia.

As the world's social-environmental problems increasingly extend across boundaries, both disciplinary and political, there is a growing need for interdisciplinarity, not only in research per se, but also in doctoral education. We present the common pitfalls of interdisciplinary research in doctoral education, illustrating approaches towards solutions using the Nordic Centre for Research on Marine Ecosystems and Resources under Climate Change (NorMER) research network as a case study. We provide insights and detailed examples of how to overcome some of the challenges of conducting interdisciplinary research within doctoral studies that can be applied within any doctoral/postdoctoral education programme, and beyond. Results from a self-evaluation survey indicate that early-career workshops, annual meetings and research visits to other institutions were the most effective learning mechanisms, whereas single discipline-focused courses and coursework were among the least effective learning mechanisms. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of components of NorMER, this case study can inform the design of future programmes to enhance interdisciplinarity in doctoral education, as well as be applied to science collaboration and academic research in general. ; This study is a product of the Nordic Centre for Research on Marine Ecosystems and Resources under Climate Change (NorMER, Project no. 36800), which is funded by the Norden Top-level Research Initiative sub-programme 'Effect Studies and Adaptation to Climate Change'. INTRODUCTION Creating a diverse new generation of geoscientists begins at the training stage. In undergraduate courses, early geoscientists are often glorified and discussed in terms of intellectual achievements, strong personalities, or heated debates. Nevertheless, the social and political backdrop for these scientists was complicated: the development of geology as a discipline is intertwined with the history of imperialism, colonialism, and Westward Expansion in the United States. Such topics are rarely discussed in current geoscience courses, and continuing to train the next generation of geoscientists without regard to this history perpetuates the same practices of exclusion. This is particularly important as co-production — developing knowledge and science together with local communities — is increasingly gaining attention and recognition today. Now, more than ever, there is a real need for historical literacy to be an integral part of STEM curriculum and training. Here we present a resource to assist educators in integrating topics on racism, colonialism, imperialism, environmental damage, and exploitation of natural resources into subjects commonly taught within geoscience departments. This resource consists of modular lecture slides with accompanying lecture notes, suggested discussion questions, and further reading to promote in-class engagement. This resource is freely available and geared towards flexibility so that rather than being a standalone course, it allows educators to pick and choose content for incorporation into their existing lectures. Topics available include plate tectonics, geomorphology, glaciology, and volcanology. For each topic, we discuss the imperialist nature of the sciences in the 19th and 20th century and link it to social inequalities today, with a particular focus on the overlooked contributions of early geology to scientific racism. Ultimately, we hope this work ignites energy towards a reimagined curriculum in the Earth sciences. This curriculum incorporates a social context for the geosciences, past and present, in order to provide a holistic base of knowledge that empowers students to recognize and navigate existing structures of oppression within geoscience and society at large. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Through storytelling, our aim is to illustrate how geoscience is implicated in colonial and imperialist projects. The teaching approach that drove the creation of these modules is informed by feminist philosophy of science and critical race theory. In the material presented, we attempt to decenter the dominant narrative about the history of geoscience, and geoscience practices, past and present. Feminist standpoint theory posits that knowledge is socially situated (Haraway 1988). In contrast to a "scientific objectivity" that is assumed to be value-neutral, "strong objectivity" requires us to understand the practice of science in a social context, where the political, economic, and social values of the scientific community control the entire scientific process (Harding 1992). We outline our teaching philosophy further in the a PDF contained in this repository. TEACHING MODULES This repository contains six modules. The paper explores the ways in which enterprise and entrepreneurial education (EEE), delivered by HEI's, impacts regional development. To do this we analysed several datasets from The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) focusing on the ways in which HEI start-up activity impacts indicators including GDP and employment. This highlights where further research and investment is needed to ensure a consistent regional development policy which we believe aligns with the conference's focus on connecting practitioners and policymakers to create a genuine change in regional disparities.

The aim of this paper is to clarify some basic aspects concerning the purpose and importance of education, the meaning of what is public, and the political significance of all proposals presented regarding education. The issue of education is primarily political and begins with how the character of the State is defined. On one hand, if the State has a subsidiary definition, education is considered to be a commodity that is negotiated in the market in the appropriate quantity and quality which correspond to the respective purchasing power. On the other hand, if the State is defined as responsible, education is considered to be a right. Political will is what establishes one definition or the other. ; Se pretende tratar de aclarar algunos aspectos básicos respecto al sentido e importancia de la educación, el significado de lo público y el sentido político de toda propuesta que se hace al respecto. El tema de la educación es primeramente político y empieza por la definición del carácter del Estado. De la definición del Estado como subsidiario se deriva la comprensión de la educación como un bien de consumo que se transa en el mercado en la cantidad y calidad que corresponda al respectivo poder de compra. De la definición de un Estado responsable deriva la comprensión de la educación como un derecho. Es la voluntad política la que establece una u otra definición.

The education of marginalised peoples and communities is a topic of great contemporary importance. Closing the Gap in Education? increases our understanding of the nature and challenges of marginalisation in southern world societies. The book also canvasses possible directions for change that might improve the social participation of young people. It is both timely and distinctive. Closing the Gap in Education? emanates from a conference organised by the Monash Institute for the Study of Global Movements, in partnership with Monash South Africa, held in 2009 at Monash's Johannesburg campus. Leading scholars and public figures from Australia, South Africa and New Zealand participated. The authors provide illuminating accounts of marginalisation which point to the inadequacy of many current educational policies. Several contributors question the usefulness of notions of closing gaps and bridging divides, suggesting alternative ways to frame the debates. In explaining the key terms – marginalisation, gaps, divides, peripheries – the contributors consider capabilities, social practices, neo-liberalism, human capital theory, raciology, redistribution, the education debt, the politics of hope, history as a cultural resource and other concepts. They do so as academics and activists committed to social justice in education. The achievement of social transformation is particularly emphasised. Closing the Gap in Education? makes a most important contribution to understanding education in marginalised communities. It is a thought-provoking work, relevant to all readers interested in education, policy, government, global, media and indigenous studies.
