This study revisits the theory of Friedrich List from a more comprehensive and modernized perspective and applies it to the Korean history of industrialization. Although List is well known as the scholar who insisted on the protection of infant industry, his argument on protectionism is a part of the broader picture depicted in his book The National System of Political Economy (1841). This study follows his theoretical legacy in various fields of study. Although we can find his theoretical influence in several fields of research such as the national innovation system, concept of national competitiveness, and theory of developmental state, these studies fail to embrace all the arguments of List. Additionally, theses models focus more heavily on the explanation of historical and regional development phenomena without providing general principles of economic development behind the phenomena. This study therefore aims to suggest the expansive reproduction system as a generalized and modernized version of List's theory and to show its example by using the Korean history of industrialization. Consequently, we argue that the economic development of Korea has been achieved by putting the theory of List into practice.

With the "forward march of labor halted", and labor movements everywhere in retreat, T.H. Marshall's state-based emphasis on social welfare as "social right" has reminded those interested in reform that appeals to membership in a national community, the essence of citizenship, have served to rally groups to successful struggles for reform. Those aspects of Marshall's ideas, best summarized in his classic 1949 address, "Citizenship and Social Class", with the greatest resonance for modern social theorists revolve around the relationship between citizenship, rights and markets. For Marshall, "the universal status of citizenship" was a plane of equality such that "all who possess the status (of citizenship) are equal with respect to the rights and duties with which the status is endowed". Rights were embodied in a common culture and enforced by state power. Marshall believed that, gradually, one particular kind of rights, "social rights", would come to limit the power of the market. While markets would continue to exist and to generate social inequality, government redistribution would increasingly expand the plane of equality to include the most important aspects of material and cultural life. The distinctive feature of these social rights according to Marshall is that they were not exemptions, privileges or paternalistic solicitude for those excluded from what he labels the "national community", but social rights were benefits given tomembers of the communityto encourage and facilitate theircontinued participation.

Product cycle theory as expressed in the analogy of flying geese has become a widely accepted way of conceptualizing industrial diffusion across East Asia. As the product cycle is repeated for increasingly sophisticated products, so, it is argued, the development trajectory of Japan will be replicated in a succession of sectors and countries. This approach fails, however, to capture the complexities of the contemporary regionalization of industrial production. East Asian industrial production should not be seen as a tightly coupled process in which the rise of national economies parallels successive product cycles. Rather than Japan's development trajectory being replicated in country after country, industrial diffusion has been characterized by shifting hierarchical networks of production and partial diffusion into diverse politicoeconomic contexts at differing historical junctures. It has also resulted in a triangulation of the region's trade patterns that has generated large imbalances in trade both within the region and between the region and the United States.

The theme of this thesis is to study the strategy of industrialization of Vietnam, to determine its common points and specificities and to deduct normative propositions. The first chapter puts the strategies of industrialization of the Asian countries in the general prospect of technological catching up, by insisting on the cases of Japan and Korea in particular, which realize a mix of a international openness and an important state interventionism. The second chapter presents the current situation and the recent evolution of the Vietnamese economy. It discusses Vietnam's insertion in the network ofEast Asian division of labour by studying the change in its foreign trade structure. The weaknesses of the Vietnamese industrial policy and its unfavourable position in the process of catching up are also controversial. The third chapter studies the factors of competitiveness of the Vietnamese economy from an examination of the traditional indicators of measure of the competitiveness and a survey about Vietnamese companies. The fourth chapter estimates the impact of the foreign direct investment (FDI)on the Vietnamese economy by using the available statistics and the results of a survey on companies having welcomed the FDI. Finally the last chapter discusses the possibility of implementation of analternative strategy of catching up, which would base on a participation in an integrated model of production, not modular and would end in a better division of the skills and the tasks with one orseveral countries at higher technological level. ; L'objet de cette thèse est d'étudier la stratégie d'industrialisation du Vietnam, d'en déterminer les points communs et les spécificités, et d'en déduire des propositions normatives. Using a life course approach, this analysis examines the effects of industrializa tion on household and family characteristics for the predominately rural population of Appala chian Kentucky in 1880 and 1910. The household and family characteristics of males and females aged 15-19, 20-24 and 25-29 are described, and variation in these characteristics is examined in terms of six contextual variables. While samples from the 1880 and 1910 general populations do not differ, the samples from the 1910 general population and the 1910 coal mine population do differ. Individuals from the industrial 1910 coal mine sample achieve adult household and family statuses at significantly earlier ages. This analysis demonstrates the effects industrialization—separate from urbanization—can have on households and families.

ABSTRACTDrawing on historical research into the period of import‐substitution industrialization (ISI) in Chile and Argentina between the 1930s and 1960s, this article claims that developmental state theory (DST) obfuscates a crucial feature of state intervention in Latin America. Specifically, despite a long‐standing interest in state–society relations, DST has been unable to incorporate adequately into its analytical framework labour–state relations and labour control in the workplace. This is because DST, in its various guises, privileges state–society relations mediated by institutions from which labour is implicitly or explicitly excluded. Extending the analytical lens of DST, the article combines critical labour‐relations and labour‐process theories to identify the purposive establishment of 'regimes of labour control' via changes in institutional and workplace relations. Using this expanded framework, it shows how the often vacillating strategies pursued by the state under ISI in Chile and Argentina, and the inefficient outcomes of ISI in these countries, can be better understood by considering efforts designed to exert control over labour.
