A vast body of research has demonstrated negative effects on social work following from a neoliberalisation of the welfare state. This article explores some of the ways in which such neoliberalisation may be carried out and maintained, by shaping social workers subjects in ways that make them compliant in such a scheme. From interviews with social workers in Sweden, an analysis of budget governing, individual wage negotiations, the client contractor model and social worker supervision shows that such governing technologies may accentuate an individual, competitive and detached subject. This may in turn produce loyalty to individual selves and management, which risks undermining the formation of a social worker subject who is willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with both their co-workers and their clients. ; Omfattande forskning har visat hur nyliberaliseringen av välfärdsstaten fått negativa effekter. La implantación del modelo de calidad propuesto por la Administración andaluza para gestionar su sistema sanitario se encuentra con múltiples resistencias que dificultan su asunción como herramienta de gestión. En este artículo, abordamos esta problemática partiendo de un análisis del discurso donde, apoyándonos en el concepto de repertorio interpretativo propuesto por Potter y Wetherell (1987). A continuación, presentamos los resultados de dicho análisis en cuanto a las características de los objetos más relevantes que hemos identificado. Estos objetos-organizacionales nos explican la naturaleza poliédrica de la realidad del sistema sanitario destacando, no obstante, la existencia de ciertos consensos parciales (aceptación generalizada del sistema sanitario como servicio público, ineficacia de los incentivos económicos como motivadores, o lo negativo de la intromisión de la política tradicional en la gestión pública) que podrían hacer posible la adopción de un modelo dialógico de gestión que incluya los distintos intereses presentes en el sistema hacia una misma dirección estratégica. ; . The implementation of the quality model proposed by the Andalusian regional government to manage its health system encounters various resistances that hinder the adoption of the model as a management tool by the stakeholders in the organisations that constitute the system. In this paper, we address this problem based on an analysis of discourse whereby, relying on the concept of interpretative repertoire put forward by Potter and Wetherell (1987). Next, we present the results of this analysis in terms of the characteristics of the objects that make up the system. These organizational objects explain the complex reality of health system showing the existence of implicit partial consensus (public nature of the health system; economic incentives do not useful for increasing motivation or the negative effect of the traditional politic manners into the public management) that it could give the option for a dialogic management model putting together all the interests towards the same strategic way.

The gap between the ostensive and performative aspects of transparency have to be analyzed (Latour, 1984). In this paper, we propose to study practices and processes, i.e. the way in which transparency is materialized into specific instruments and technologies that currently govern corporate conducts: private CSR reporting standards. For that purpose, we analyze two widely diffused CSR corporate standards (the GRI and the CDP), stressing the shiftings between the original discourses on transparency of their promoters to their implementation into a set of tools and technologies. We highlight and discuss a risk of capture of transparency principles by the auditing profession who is at the forefront of such standards.

German discourses of demographic change are characterized by alarmist scenarios. Especially since the turn of the millennium, a growing amount of publications addresses population aging and shrinking by depicting mostly dystopian future scenarios. Allegedly inevitable consequences with fundamental relevance for society are often proclaimed in the media and social-scientific discourses. Although most demographers alert to the fact that population projections should not be interpreted as prognoses, they are often employed as irrefutable knowledge as well as camouflage for normative positions. Complex demographic measures are frequently misinterpreted by journalists, who consequently produce "garbled demography" (Teitelbaum 2004). However, the "demographization of the social" (Barlösius 2007) turns out to be more complex than a misunderstanding or a distortion of "neutral" scientific facts. Michel Foucault's works provide a framework of suitable complexity in order to analyze the depth-structures of both discourses and their interrelations. This paper will first describe relevant conditions of existence of demographic knowledge orders, their rules of formation, and discursive regularities in order to shed light on the demographic ontology of the present. Subsequently, these depth structures will be related to preliminary results of a discourse analysis of 2900 press articles from leading German newspapers and journals covering the period from 2000 to 2012. In conclusion, first contours of a recently emerging post-alarmist discourse will be outlined.

The dominant Sandinista party discourse of Nicaragua designates the family as the country's base social institution, but the prevailing machismo threatens the family's structure. Men - fathers - leave, either literally as migrant laborers or in the abandonment of their family responsibilities. In order to counteract the men's socially sanctioned absence, the state deploys a hegemonic expectation of motherhood in the passage of its complete abortion ban, one of the strictest in the world. All forms of abortion, including saving the life of the mother, are banned in Nicaragua and both doctors and women are heavily penalized if an abortion is performed. The denial of this vital health service becomes much more threatening in the context of Nicaragua's increased maternal mortality and the highest adolescent fertility rate in Latin America. However, this thesis focuses on abortion within the social context of idealized maternity; here, abortion is not simply the removal of a fetus but a rejection of motherhood, a dangerous option to normalize when women are seen as those primarily responsible for the family's well-being. This paper examines the intensified focus on return in Danish asylum policy, the so-called paradigm shift of 2019, and the changed approach to asylum claims made by Syrian nationals from the Damascus region. It does so by analyzing nine asylum cases assessed by the Refugee Appeals Board and material produced by Danish state actors using the discourse analysis of Laclau and Mouffe (1985) and 'the toolbox of governmentality' (Walters 2012). The aim of the study was to understand the tactics of legitimization regarding the decision to reject asylum protection to three Syrian nationals as well as mapping the structures that facilitated the decisions. The study concludes that discourses linking 'refugee status' to 'temporariness' and 'return', 'asylum protection' to 'international obligations', and 'the refugee' to an essentialist understanding of the term are fundamental in facilitating the decisions made in the cases. Furthermore, a governmental goal of ensuring the security of society underpins and works to sustain these discourses. The findings contribute to creating detailed knowledge about the Danish asylum system and the logic supporting the increased focus on return.

The book examines how medical knowledge is produced around bodies that do not fit in the heteronormative framework of the state's rationale and processes. The marginal bodies studied in this research are termed MSM, men who have sex with men, categorized as a high-risk group in the backdrop of HIV/AIDS. These Queer bodies entered the registers of epidemiology and governmentality. This classification is the point of departure for the book. The book interrogates and asks how does a sexual subject become a political question? To answer this political trajectory, the book analyses the category of risk in biomedicine. It investigates how the category of risk becomes critical to the Indian state's rationale and policies wherein, through the ambit of health and population, sexuality is managed. Unearthing the sexual politics in South Asia, the book, based on rich empirical evidence derived from the lived experiences of MSM, narrates the construction of sexual subjectivity and masculinity. The process of construction occurs in negotiation with the Indian state, bringing forth the dimension of the Indian state as a medico-legal governmentality regime and how MSM takes on the identity of a medicalized subject.
