This licentiate thesis describes and analyses the modern history of the socio-technical systems for urban water supply and sanitation in East Africa with focus on Uganda and Kenya. The key objective of the thesis is to evaluate to what extent the historic processes frame and influence the water and sanitation services sectors in these countries today. The theoretical approach combines the Large Technical Systems approach from the discipline of History of Technology with New Institutional Economics. Throughout, urban water and sanitation service systems are regarded as socio-technical systems, where institutions, organisation and technology all interact. The thesis consists of three separate articles and a synthesis in the form of a framework narrative. The first article provides a discussion of the theoretical framework with special focus on the application of Public Goods theory to urban water and sanitation. The second article describes the establishment of the large-scale systems for water supply and sanitation in Kampala, Uganda in the period 1920-1950. The third article focuses on the politics of urban water supply in Kenya with emphasis on the period 1900-1990. The main findings in this thesis are that the socio-technical systems for urban water and sanitation evolve over long periods of time and are associated with inertia that makes these systems change slowly. The systems were established in the colonial period to mainly respond to the needs and preferences of a wealthy minority and a technological paradigm evolved based on capital-intensive and large-scale technology. Attempts to expand services to all citizens in the post-colonial period under this paradigm were not sustainable due to changes in the social, political and economic environment while incentives for technological change were largely absent. Methods of regional economic analysis are widely used in regional and urban economics as well as in economic geography. This paper introduces the REAT (Regional Economic Analysis Toolbox) package for the programming environment R, which provides a collection of mathematical regional analysis methods in a user-friendly way. The focus is on the identification of regional inequality, beta and sigma convergence, measurement of agglomerations, point-based measures of clustering and accessibility as well as regional growth. The theoretical basics of the applications are briefly introduced, while the usage of the most important functions is presented and explained using real data.

By taxing rents, governments can avoid a trade-off between productivity-enhancing public investment and efficiency losses from raising funds. However, it is unclear whether the rents present in a growing economy are sufficient to finance the socially optimal investment. We prove that the social optimum can be attained if the income share from a fixed factor, such as land, exceeds the public investment requirement. We thus translate the Henry George Theorem from urban economics to neoclassical and endogenous growth settings: here, the socially optimal land rent tax rate is below 100%. Our finding may address the underfunding of national infrastructure investments.

The literature on growth theory has pointed to the importance of human capital in order to explain the process of economic development. In the present study, we highlight the role played by cities in fostering human capital accumulation. More particularly, building on a simple urban economics model, we perform cross-country estimations, measuring the relation between human capital accumulation and urbanization. Our results support the result according to which more urbanization induces higher rates of human capital accumulation, but only above a certain threshold level of development. This latter result raises policy concerns on issues related to over-urbanization.

Today, the Bay Area is home to the most successful knowledge economy in America, while Los Angeles has fallen progressively further behind its neighbor to the north and a number of other American metropolises. The authors argue that it is essential to understand the interactions of three major components-economic specialization, human capital formation, and institutional factors-to determine how well a regional economy will cope with new opportunities and challenges. Drawing on economics, sociology, political science, and geography, they argue that the economic development of metropolitan regions hinges on previously underexplored capacities for organizational change in firms, networks of people, and networks of leaders. This paper examines critically a cluster of recent economic policy initiatives in the People's Republic of China known as the New Economic Readjustment Policies, and analyzes their probable impacts on the equality differentials between Chinese women and men as broad categories of urban workers. After reviewing the post-Mao policy context and goals of the current modernization campaigns, the paper analyzes six aspects of the New Economic Readjustment Policies as they are likely to affect urban working women: (1) sex-segmentation in the work force; (2) wage differentials; (3) moral and material incentives; (4) older women in the work force; (5) management opportunities for women; and (6) consumerism and housework. This analysis is followed by the responses of the All-China Women's Federation to these concerns, and a discussion of the current political work of the All-China Women's Federation.

Cities can only exist because of the highly developed systems which underlie them, ensuring that energy, clean water, etc. are moved efficiently from producer to user, and that waste is removed. The urgent need to make the way that these services are provided more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable means that these systems are in a state of transition; from centralized to decentralized energy; from passive to smart infrastructure; from toll-free to road pricing. Such transitions are widely studied in the context of the influence of service providers, users, and regulators.

This is the first book that takes a theoretical approach to the effects of international immigration by considering the current economic topics confronted by more highly developed countries such as Japan. Developed here is the classic trade model by Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson, McDougall's basic model of the international movement factor, the urban-rural migration model by Harris-Todaro, and Copeland-Taylor's well-known model in the field of environmental economics by introducing new trends such as economic integration including free trade and factor mobility between countries at different stages of development. Coexistence of two types of immigrants - legal, skilled workers and illegal, unskilled workers - without any explicit signs of discrimination, transboundary pollution caused by neighboring lower-developed countries with poor pollution abatement technology, difficult international treatment of transboundary renewable resources, the rapid process of aging and population decrease, the higher unemployment rate of younger generations, and the serious gap between permanent and temporary employed workers--are also considered in this book as new and significant topics under the context of international immigration. Taking into account the special difficulties of those serious problems in Asia, each chapter illustrates Japanese and other Asian situations that encourage readers to understand the importance of optimal immigration policies. Also shown is the possibility that economic integration and liberalization of international immigration should bring about positive effects on the economic welfare of the developed host country including the aspects of natural environment, renewable transboundary resources, the rate of unemployment, and the wage gap between workers.

The current study seeks to establish the preferences of Bulgarians through exploring how passenger transport in Bulgaria developed from 2012 to 2022. On a theoretical level, the characteristics of this sector are described, such as types of passenger transport vehicles. The research interest is aimed at tracking the dynamics behind all the options for passenger carriage forming the supply of the transport market in Bulgaria: by rail, bus, air, water, and urban electric transport. To achieve this objective, the parameters of activity in the passenger transport segment are used as the main measures – number of passengers, passenger-kilometres and average distance travelled. During the studied period, passenger transport in Bulgaria developed at variable rates and was influenced by environmental factors. The mode of transport most affected by the pandemic in 2020–2021 was by air. A decrease in the total number of passengers and overall performance for 2022 compared to 2012 can be observed. This decline is due to a decrease in bus and rail transport indicators. The study has established that Bulgarians prefer traveling by bus to other public transport alternatives. Although the absolute number of vehicles has decreased in this segment, it has the largest relative share according to the indicators of transported passengers and performed work as part of the total transport activity in the country. In a practical respect, attention is focused on modern solutions related to information and communication technologies, as well as some opportunities to attract more public transport passengers. The author also draws attention to some EU initiatives in the field of air and maritime transport concerning Union-wide energy policy.
