This chapter reviews the mediatisation concept, which has recently made a strong impact in media and communication studies, particularly in the field of political communication but also in science communication. It discusses the outcomes and problems of mediatisation research in relation to shifting science communication practices. The chapter introduces the concept of promotional culture in order to put the mediatisation of science into the broader social and cultural context of com-mercialisation and marketisation of research and universities. ; Peer reviewed
This book presents a broad spectrum of problems related to statistics, mathematics, teaching, social science, and economics as well as a range of tools and techniques that can be used to solve these problems. It is the result of a scientific collaboration between experts in the field of economic and social systems from the University of Defence in Brno (Czech Republic), G. d'Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy), Pablo de Olavid eUniversity of Sevilla (Spain), and Ovidius University in Constanţa, (Romania). The studies included were selected using a peer-review process and reflect heterogeneity and complexity of economic and social phenomena. They and present interesting empirical research from around the globe and from several research fields, such as statistics, decision making, mathematics, complexity, psychology, sociology and economics. The volume is divided into two parts. The first part, "Recent trends in mathematical and statistical models for economic and social sciences", collects papers on quantitative matters, which propose mathematical and statistical models for social sciences, economics, finance, and business administration. The second part, "Recent trends in qualitative theories for economic and social sciences", includes papers on qualitative matters, which discuss social, economic, and teaching issues. It is an ideal reference work for all those researchers interested in recent quantitative and qualitative tools. Covering a wide range of topics, it appeals in equal measure to mathematicians, statisticians, sociologists, philosophers, and specialists in the fields of communication, social and political sciences.
This chapter explores the nature and science of compassion, how it can texture political discourse, but also the challenges it is up against. Most scientists recognise that nothing makes much sense in biology, or the nature of the mind, without an evolutionary analysis. Evolutionary analysis operates through two fundamental processes in the universe, which are splitting apart, separating, diversifying, and even competing versus coming together, integrating, coordinating, and building complexity. In the television series Westworld, pleasure androids are programmed with algorithms and scripts to live out certain kinds of life narratives such that the human participants visiting the 'theme park' can interact and do what they want to them. As primates, humans are capable of two quite different types of life strategy and motivational orientation to the world. ; N/A
This document outlines a series of works developed over several decades – from the original and independent works of Blinder (1973) and Oaxaca (1973) - with the aim of facilitating the comprehension of the technique for wage decomposition and its methodological improvements and applications over time. Similarly, the analyzed applications serve as a guide for the development of work related to the estimation of wage gaps between groups of individuals and their causes.
This collection of twenty essays, of which five are in French, written by leading English and French literary and historical scholars, deconstructs the ethical and political framework supporting and circumscribing the actions of a powerful elite in France between the early 1600s and the final years of Louis XIV's reign.

AbstractThe most recent reactions on the papal encyclical Pacem in terris (Peace on Earth) in the German-speaking area show that this document still is a relevant issue. This particular reputation is, on the one hand, based on the views held by Pope John XXIII concerning the recognition of human rights, the condemnation of the recourse to war, and the place of Catholic social teaching in the world of international politics. On the other hand it remains controversial because it is relevant for the identity of Catholic social ethics while no consensus has been reached as to its import. This contribution focuses on three sets of questions which place the encyclical in recent socio-ethical literature.
The European Union's Commissioner for Science and Research argues that policymakers can no longer ignore the role science can play in averting the security threats posed by climate change. Pressure on the cultivated land could lead to tensions between nomadic peoples and farmers, between neighboring tribal groups, and between states; and parts of the world suffering from flooding or drought could be potential flash-points for conflicts over fresh water.
