International audience ; The history of architecture and urbanism is classically represented as a sequence of major doctrines. However, the well-known architectural "-isms " are bound together with productions of the so-called " transitional " periods, the legacy of which deserves special scientific interest. A significant number of these kinds of " in-between product " in the field of social housing was built during the 1960s and 1970s, between the periods of modernism and postmodernism. At the end of the 1980s in many European countries, particularly in France, massive renovation processes were started, which continue to this day. Due to political, social and aesthetic changes, a great deal of postwar residential heritage has been radically reconstructed or demolished. This process touches not only ordinary residential groups (so-called grands ensembles), but also harms some of the more interesting ensembles. Many of them are undervalued and have not been rehabilitated since their creation, with some often doomed to disappear. The current paper is an attempt to analyse the historical, urban and morphological aspects of the Maurelette residential complex, built in the northern suburbs of Marseille during 1963-1965. The design particularities of the Maurelette complex demonstrate the ambition to create a " non-ordinary " ensemble using ordinary and inexpensive construction means and materials. The original interpretation of the traditional square, street and rampart could be considered as early applications of postmodernist ideas of free " expression " of historical urban forms. This case study intends to raise awareness about the heritage constructed between the major architectural periods, which deserve to be included in the contemporary urban structure without negating or altering their authentic concept. Its existence will contribute to the continued urban environment, thereby making the modern city more resilient.
"What kind of army wants the king of rock-n-roll? Elvis's Army explores the great military and social experiment that was the Cold War atomic army. Militarily, the US Army transformed for the revolution in warfare initiated by the nuclear weapons. Traumatized by Cold War reductions and Korea, it seized on the vision of a great atomic land war against the Soviet Union. It not only adapted a radically new way of fighting, but fundamental changes in its equipment, concepts, and training. Socially, the 1950s the service underwent even more of a transformation. In large part due to the draft, the Fifties Army became the nation's most racially and economically egalitarian institution, the only place where black and white, college graduates and illiterates, rich and poor, urban and rural had to live, work, and, if necessary, fight together. In return for their service, the army was expected to provide young males not only with military skills, but also education, technical training, entertainment, and moral instruction. This social transformation was nowhere more evident than with Elvis Presley. He entered the service a notorious musical rebel hated by adult society; he emerged two years later a clean-cut young all-American boy in the movie G.I. Blues. Elvis's Army is the first history of the US Army's transformation for the atomic battlefield. But it also reveals the cultural importance of the US Army in Fifties America, from draft calls to ROTC, from basic training to overseas service, from Madison Avenue to Hollywood, and from atomic maneuvers to rock-n-roll."--

[EN] The uses of water resources of the river Júcar have been a recurring element of conflict throughout the history that, at some times, deepened. This is what happened between the late sixteenth century and early seventeenth centuries, coinciding with climatic variations derived from the Little Ice Age. The building of dams, specks and other structures to slow the free flow of the river produced a clash of interests in different aspects such as economic, political or jurisdictional between the different towns of the area of the Ribera del Júcar (Carcaixent versus Alzira, Alzira versus Sueca…) channelled largely through the courts of the kingdom. This paper seeks to analyse these disputes using the legal evidence and the references about the building of dams and floods that happened in this period. ; Aparisi Romero, F.; Muñoz Navarro, D. New communication technology has transformed the way in which news about key events is communicated. For example, in the immediate aftermath of catastrophic events such as the Mumbai attacks or the Japanese tsunami, partial accounts, accurate and inaccurate facts, rumour and speculation are now very rapidly disseminated across the globe, often ahead of official announcements and formal news reporting. Often in such situations rumours take hold, and continue to characterise events even after a more complete, more accurate picture eventually emerges. This book explores how such rumours are cr

This book discusses the rich and varied culture of China's online society, and its impact on offline China. It argues that the internet in China is a separate 'space' in which individuals and institutions emerge and interact. While offline and online spaces are connected and influence each other, the Chinese internet is more than merely a technological or media extension of offline Chinese society. Instead of following existing studies by locating online China in offline society, the contributors in this book discuss the carnival of the Chinese internet on its own terms.Examining the com

"Criminology has always enjoyed a highly productive relationship with the city, generating many important empirical and theoretical studies. But all too often the human experience, social diversity and the inherently pluralistic fabric of city life are transformed into the discourse of demographics, statistics and rationality. This book examines the crime-city nexus in a way that makes sense of criminology's past and contemporary engagements, including both administrative criminology and the work of Jack Katz and Mike Davis. Drawing on a range of disciplinary frameworks - social theory, urban studies, architectural theory and research into urban consumerism practices - the author argues that consumption is central to understanding the city and urban crime. This book will be of interest to students and academics of criminology, social theory, urban studies and cultural studies."--BOOK JACKET
