This book discusses Samuel Pufendorf and his contributions to the development of the European Enlightenment and the emergence of economics as a social science. Born in 1632 in Saxony, Pufendorf wrote widely on natural law, ethics, jurisprudence, and political economy and was one of the most important figures in early-modern political thought. Although his work fits within the intellectual framework of natural jurisprudence, there is an argument to be made that his ideas promoted the development of economics as a distinct discipline within the social sciences. Written by participants in the 34th Heilbronn Symposion in Economics and the Social Sciences, the contributions to this volume give an overview of Pufendorf's influence on other authors of the Enlightenment, such as Locke, Montesquieu, and Rousseau, as well as addressing the theoretical implications of his extensive writings. Further chapters place a special focus on Pufendorf's discussion of economic matters, such as property rights theory, price theory, taxation, and preferences and decision-making. The book concludes with analyzing Pufendorf's influence on Adam Smith, his anticipations of elements of modern economic theory, and his impact on the history of economic thought. Providing a fresh look at one of the foundational scholars of social science, this volume will be of interest to researchers and students of the history of economic thought, political economy, economic history, and political philosophy.

AbstractThe scaling of urban climate action and its governance is rapidly becoming a central focus in the urban climate governance literature and policy debates. Building on the broader scaling literature and inspired by related initiatives in other fields, this article calls for the development of a systematic "science of scaling" for urban climate governance. Such a science of scaling may help to give a better understanding of how well-performing urban climate action and its governance can be multiplied, accelerated and broadened (ie horizontal and vertical scaling and scaling out, up and down), and it may help to uncover scaling trajectories towards systemic change in cities (ie deep scaling).

Truth Commissions and State Building demonstrates that the work of both institutions is interlinked and intrinsic to reform in post-conflict and post-authoritarian settings. Chapters examine truth commissions as transitional justice mechanisms for civic inclusion, identity formation, institutional reform, and nation-(re)building.
"This book creates an understanding of science and appreciates its role in innovation and sustainable development. It emphasizes that science is a common heritage of humankind, stemming from curiosity, imagination, and exploration, so as to understand the things around us. Elaborating the role of science in learning, it explores the effects of science on societies, highlighting the opportunities for newly developing societies to overcome obstacles in development. The sparks from the spirit of science include not only new knowledge but also innovations, which are major ingredients for development and sustainability. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner, avoiding technical jargon, and contains case studies, practical examples, and historical perspectives. It is intended for a general, especially young, readership and will appeal to those curious about the nature of science and the benefits it brings together with possible pitfalls it may have."--Provided by publisher.
