Over the past several decades, the vibrant, multiethnic borough of Queens has seen growth in the community of Nepali migrants, many of whom are navigating the challenging bureaucratic process of asylum legalization. Surviving the Sanctuary City follows them through the institutional spaces of asylum offices, law firms, and human rights agencies to document the labor of seeking asylum. As an interpreter and a volunteer at a grassroots community center, anthropologist Tina Shrestha has witnessed how migrants must perform a particular kind of suffering that is legible to immigration judges and asylum officers. She demonstrates the lived contradictions asylum seekers face while producing their "suffering testimonials" and traces their attempts to overcome these contradictions through the Nepali notions of kaagaz banaune (making paper) and dukkha (suffering). Surviving the Sanctuary City asks what everyday survival among migrants and asylum seekers can tell us about the cultural logic of suffering within the confines of US borders. Through rich ethnographic detail and careful nuanced narratives, it puts the lives and perspectives of the Nepali migrant community at the center of the story. In so doing, Shrestha offers a fundamental rethinking of asylum seeking as a form of precarious labor and immigration enforcement in a rapidly changing US society
"Sharp concludes this study with an analysis of how indigenous spirit mediums and Protestant exorcists treat extreme cases of possession and madness, revealing contradictions inherent in cross-cultural psychiatric praxis. More generally, the book challenges current views about possession and marginal status, particularly in reference to gender and age, insightful discussions of the lives of migrant adults and children as they seek relief. Some personal and social ills make Sharp's investigation relevant to gender studies, medical anthropology religion and ritual, and the politics of culture as well as African and Madagascar studies."--Jacket

The relevance of the article. Charitable activities play an important role in the formation of value guidelines and moral norms of an individual and society as a whole. Its development is determined by various factors that occur in society. The start of active hostilities in Ukraine in 2022 affected all spheres of human existence. Among them, there were changes in the functioning and development strategies of charity events, in particular events. This issue needs clarification, because it will allow not only to understand the strategies of adaptation of this form of charity, but also to predict further ways of its transformation. That is why scientific, including socio-cultural analysis of the phenomenon of charity event is extremely relevant.
The purpose of the article. To analyze charitable events in the socio-cultural space in the conditions of a full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war; to reveal the cultural, artistic, financial and technical factors affecting the organization and holding of events.
The methodology. A cultural approach to the analysis of the mentioned problem demonstrates that the concept of charity belongs to certain historically developed and regulated norms of social actions that implement their worldview orientations and cultural values. The specifics of scientific intelligence led to the use of the structural-functional method, which made it possible to investigate specific functional characteristics and regularities. The method of content analysis and personal practical experience of holding events made it possible to determine the artistic features of conducting charity events, the method of terminological analysis helped to find out that the Polonism "impreza" successfully filled a gap in the lexical system of the Ukrainian language.
The results. We believe that charity is one of the "material" factors of the spiritual culture of mankind. This phenomenon arose spontaneously at the beginning of human civilization. Subsequently, it developed as targeted attention and concrete help from society to people who are unable to independently solve the issue of personal livelihood due to a number of reasons (subjective or objective). If we trace the genesis of charity, it is possible to distinguish three main historical types that are peculiar to the Western European mentality: ancient, Christian and modern charity. It was revealed that today the prevalence of charity in Ukraine is rated as "high". It has been found out that in terms of its artistic structure, the charity event has all the features inherent in such forms of stage art as collective concert, thematic spectacle, solo concert. However, when forming the concept of a charity event, the organizers should naturally and organically integrate an auction, exhibition, fair or active online donation into the structure of the event. An important factor in organizing a charity event is attracting external help and finding people you can rely on and who will show a genuine interest in this cause. Involvement in a charity project must be voluntary, following the "calling of the heart". It can be assumed that true humanism is achieved exclusively in the conditions of practical realization of the essence of a person through his actions.
The scientific novelty. The time of military aggression was systematized, the place and role of domestic artists in the charitable sphere was established. Sociocultural functions of the phenomenon of charity events in Ukraine were generalized.
The practical significance. The data of this study reveal various types and forms of charity events as effective factors in fundraising. The materials of the article can be used for the practical organization of a charity project and the theoretical features of the organization of charity art projects studied by film director students.
Conclusions. Charitable activity is a determining point of reference in the formation of moral and ethical values and humanistic relations in society. Thanks to the holding of charity events, a number of psychological, social and political issues are resolved, in particular, the formation of national identity, which is an integral factor of Ukraine's national security. At the international level, artistic charity events primarily carry out "cultural diplomacy" with the aim of conveying the truth about Ukraine and the war in Ukraine, and more broadly — explaining and understanding what Ukraine and its culture actually are, what is its self-sufficiency and diversity, how this energy was manifested at different historical stages despite mostly unfavorable socio-political contexts.

This book is an important contribution to narrative research and highlights how narratives can produce social change. The author demonstrates this through an analysis of concepts like future, uncertainty and risk, both in terms of individual impact and as collective forms of social life. The book reconstructs the relationships between future, uncertainty and risk through everyday how narratives exert power over individual and social life by influencing individual or collective decisions and choices. Narratives also change future prospects, thus producing social change. Some of the examples the author draws out for discussion are - in specific - the narration of the migration flows in the Mediterranean Sea, and the narration of the pandemic emergency from COVID-19. The result of different narratives has been the emergence of new ideologies and of a complex series of dynamics in which the local ends up becoming global and vice versa. Highly topical and interdisciplinary in its approach, this book is of interest to researchers and students of the sociology of culture and communication, media and communication studies, social and cultural psychology and cultural anthropology
Drawing on long-term ethnographic research, this book examines the emergence of mobility as an enduring and elusive collective value in contemporary Dakar, Senegal. It takes the concept of embouteillage (bottleneck)--a term used primarily to describe the city's proliferating traffic jams, but also frustrated migration itineraries, tedious bureaucratic lags, overcrowded residential neighborhoods, overburdened infrastructures, the trickle of investment funds, and the scarcity of foreign visas--as both a concrete point of departure and as a theoretical lens for making sense of everyday life and policy in urban Africa and beyond. This book argues that it was in navigating through and engaging with bottlenecks of all sorts that residents grappled most urgently and intimately with the changing nature of citizenship and governance in the capital city. Moreover, the book asserts that the bottleneck, broadly construed, is not peculiar to Dakar but is instead the defining feature of citizen-state relations throughout the Global South. In this way, the book contributes to scholarly literatures on economic policy and practice after structural adjustment; citizenship and governance in a transnational era; urban space and infrastructure in the Global South; and migration and mobility

"Mauritian independence in 1968 marked the end of a regime favorable to the Franco-Mauritians, the island's white colonial elite. Now, in postcolonial Mauritius, this group is faced with a much more diverse power constellation and often feels in competition with others vying for their privileges. Though this is a clear departure from the colonial heydays, Franco-Mauritians have been able to continue their elite position into the early twenty-first century. This book focuses on the power of white elites still lingering on in postcolonial realities, and with regards to elites and power in general, addresses anew how an elite group aims to prolong its position over time"--Provided by publisher

Can citizenship rights be denied to significant groups in a society that regards itself as civilized and self-governing? Is it possible to exclude such people in the name of freedom and reason? Is it plausible to explain classifications that differentiate between first- and second-class citizens as "natural"?This is the paradox inherent in modern politics, born of the revolutions that ended the Ancien Régime in the western world. Throughout the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth, liberalism inspired a representative form of government that appealed to citizenship, yet mar

Renowned social justice advocate John A. Powell persuasively argues that we have not achieved a post-racial society and that there is much work to do to redeem the American promise of inclusive democracy. Culled from a decade of writing about social justice and spirituality, these meditations on race, identity, and social policy provide an outline for laying claim to our shared humanity and a way toward healing ourselves and securing our future. Racing to Justice challenges us to replace attitudes and institutions that promote and perpetuate social suffering with those that foster relationships and a way of being that transcends disconnection and separation

"It is well known that Charles Tilly left scholars of big structures, large processes, and huge comparisons a tall research agenda. It is less acknowledged that he also left political ethnographers an impressive and provocative set of tools. In the skilled hands of the contributors to this insightful volume, the 'Tilly toolbox' is put to good work in the service of a theory-driven and empirically-grounded exploration of Mediterranean contentious landscapes."--Javier Auyero, University of Texas, Austin; Editor, Qualitative Sociology." The purpose of the review is to characterize general theoretical approaches to the study of diasporas in contemporary science and to present a historiographic analysis of the study of the Armenian diaspora in Russia. The research is based on a complex of historiographic sources: monographs, collective works, scientific articles, theses, that are devoted to the phenomenon of diasporas in the modern world. The authors emphasize the relevance of the study of diasporas in the context of globalization, mass migration, formation of new ethnic communities and polemics around the policy of multiculturalism. At present, the study of diasporas is conducted within the frameworks of history and philosophy, sociology and political science, ethnology and cultural studies, demography and economics, which explains the variety of methodological approaches to the phenomenon of the diaspora. Representatives of different humanities distinguish such defining features of the diaspora as stable ethnic (nostalgic) identity and collective memory, the presence of self-organization and a developed network of intragroup communications, a special style of life behavior and strategies for survival in the host society. These theoretical approaches find application in the study of the Armenian diaspora in Russia, which is a part of the world Armenian diaspora and at the same time has unique socio-cultural characteristics. Currently, the Armenian diaspora in Russia is widely studied both on a national scale and at the regional level, however, most studies cover only the southern regions and the capital of the Russian Federation. The creation of a comprehensive history of the Armenian diaspora in the Middle Volga region is an urgent scientific task. In the final part of the review, the authors outline possible prospects for further study of the Armenian diaspora in Russia and individual regions; this task can be solved using an interdisciplinary approach.
This study aims at answering the following question: what is jazz music? Starting with its musical specificities, I would like to reach the way jazz music is deeply linked to American social and cultural background. More than a simple definition, I tried to analyze it in order to reveal its inherent values and understand its historical context. To think about jazz music is to build an aesthetic coherence. Since jazz is not only swing and sounds, a proper jazz study must consider its origins by means of a genealogical method: why these people played such music at this precise moment? Musicological debates need social philosophy and historical sciences. This task has to take into account that it is a popular music emerging from the occidental and african music clash, all of this happening in a segregation context. If some can see music as abstraction, they leave out the very concrete and playful reality of jazz music. We play jazz, we dance jazz, it becomes movements, body attitudes and, by being so, requires more than a simple musicological analysis. My reflection is based on the following presupposition: jazz music takes part of the American Weltanschauung. This is the reason why I see jazz as a good introduction to American Cultural Studies and post-jazz musical theories.
