This study focuses on the political attitudes of UK citizens in the aftermath of the 'Brexit' vote. It has been argued that differences within electorates across Europe are found in disputes over taxes, redistribution of wealth and social welfare, as much as in divergent ideas on how to deal with globalisation, migration, and climate change. This article uses the 2016–2017 round of the European Social Survey (N = 1959) to shed light on two important issues in regard to the relationship between 'old' and 'new' politics. By using multiple correspondence analysis, we first consider the structure, or dimensionality, of the space of political attitudes in contemporary UK society. Contrary to a prevailing discourse that forwards the argument that postmaterial values constitute an altogether separate political dimension in late modernity, we observe that such values collapse into traditional left/right standpoints. Second, we discuss the connection between class (economic capital, cultural capital, and occupational class) and position-takings in the space of political attitudes. We show that class retains a limited effect on political position-takings, where educational capital plays the most important role. The divisions between the politically interested–uninterested, old–young, men–women, and rural–urban are more clearly demarcated than differences between people of different social class positions. Furthermore, polarisation is most prevalent between a highly opinionated, relatively resourceful, small minority of the population.

Little is known about the roles of habitus, capital, and social topographies in shaping under-age access to tobacco. This article draws on Bourdieu's theory of practice and data generated from 56 focus groups with 14- to 19-year-olds across seven European cities to answer the question "via what sources and by what means do adolescents obtain tobacco?" We find that adolescents use a range of personal capitals (social, cultural, and economic) to access tobacco, with the specific constitution and deployment of these capitals varying according to the regularities of different fields. Since adolescents access tobacco via culturally embedded practices, attempts to curtail this access are more likely to be effective if they are multi-pronged, culturally informed, and attuned to the lived experiences of adolescent smokers. ; publishersversion ; published

El presente artículo se basa en los resultados del diagnóstico elaborado como parte del curso «Práctica de Campo» de la especialidad de Sociología de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la PUCP en el semestre 2018-21. Se inicia con una aproximación teórica sobre la asociatividad y la pequeña agri­cultura. Luego se propone una metodología mixta, recogiendo la percepción de actores del sector público, privado y académico con respecto a la importancia de este mecanismo para la inserción de cuatro asociaciones agropecuarias de la región de Moquegua en mercados nacional e internacional. A partir del análisis de la asociatividad y su relación con los capitales —humano, social, natural, físico y financiero—, se concluye que esta funciona como impulsora de oportunidades productivas, pero aún se enfrenta a desafíos para que sea una opción real en el fortalecimiento de los pequeños produc­tores de Moquegua. En particular para las asociaciones estudiadas, el capital natural (agua o tierra) es un factor clave para la asociatividad; la tradición y cultura (capital social) fungen como lazos que fomentan la confianza en el colectivo, y las oportunidades de mercado apoyadas por agentes externos que potencian la voluntad de cooperar y asociarse. Finalmente, el marco institucional y la capacidad de gestión de estas unidades económicas serán determinantes para considerar a la asociatividad como una estrategia sostenible y de desarrollo para los pequeños productores.

En effet, dans le cas de la capitale de l'Irlande du Nord, il s'agit d'étudier la question de la nature tout en posant la question du sectarisme, de la guerre et de l'histoire de l'île dans son ensemble. Dans le roman de Robert McLiam Wilson Eureka Street les représentations de la nature sont liées aux paradoxes des représentations politiques du violent conflit nord-irlandais. Le narrateur pose la question de la place de la nature à Belfast par le biais de l'humour et de l'ironie. Publié en 1998, Eureka Street relate non sans cynisme parfois la vie d'un groupe d'amis à Belfast en 1994, quelques mois avant le cessez-le feu du 31 août de la même année. Le cessez-le feu de 1994 est le premier à marquer véritablement un tournant dans la période dite des « Troubles » et à poser le premier jalon du processus de paix. Neuf ans après l'accord anglo-irlandais de 1985 les attentats n'ont cessé de se multiplier entre les différentes factions que ce soit à Belfast, en Irlande du Nord et en Angleterre, et il marque aussi la première étape significative vers l'Accord du Vendredi Saint du mois d'avril 1998 et le début du processus de paix qui a suivi. Un des deux narrateurs est un trentenaire prénommé Jake est un Catholique de Belfast qui fait part de sa vie et des événements dans la capitale durant ces mois cruciaux, plus de trente ans après le début des « Troubles », litote qui cache mal l'ampleur du traumatisme dans la population, aussi bien catholique que protestante. Le meilleur ami de Jake, Chuckie Lurgan est protestant et fête son trentième anniversaire dans le premier chapitre du roman. "Statistics are used to make critical judgments about society and fuel policy debates through different configurations that link together three components: a) the questioning of policy appropriateness and fairness; b) the categories and statistical tools used in evaluations; c) the economic, social and political theories invoked in interpretations and explanations. Using convention theory and the sociology of engagements, the article offers a perspective view of how these configurations have changed over nearly half a century in France, based on a single statistical source. This approach to 'the politics of statistics' identifies four main configurations around four main measurements of human characteristics: social origin, occupational skills, human capital, migration history." With the rapidly growing importance of sustainability and corporate responsibility in a globalized world, management schools are increasingly integrating long-term economic, environmental and social issues into their teaching and research. Climate change, poverty, labour standards and human rights are among the many topics that future decision-makers will need to face in their careers. Business education needs to reflect this new reality and provide a broadened understanding of value creation in order to create economic capital while developing social and preserving natural capital. Case studies can be important tools for creating learning processes on different levels - students are forced to struggle with exactly the kinds of decisions and dilemmas managers confront every day. In this reflection of reality, the values and goals of the student are systematically challenged. This can be especially valuable in the context of sustainability management - organizations are now continually forced to value the different aspects of sustainability and their interrelations: How do social issues impact the economic bottom line? How can an environmentally sound strategy create a positive impact on employee motivation and thus have measurable impact on economic performance? What comes first and why? This third collection of oikos case studies is based on the winning cases from the 2010 to 2013 annual case competition. So what makes an excellent case in sustainability management? We investigate how religious beliefs affected the take up of the birth control pill and impacted women's outcomes using the 1970 liberalization of oral contraceptives in the Netherlands. We first document a massive and immediate drop in fertility among minor women, aged 21 or younger, for whom access restrictions were most drastically lifted. We then evaluate how area level social norms - as proxied by votes for religiously opposed political parties - influenced pill adoption by examining its impact on female fertility control and human capital formation. We find that younger women who grew up in more liberal areas were much less likely to experience a birth or marriage as a minor, invested more in education, and ended up in wealthier households. Finally, we study the potential additional impact of supply side frictions stemming from the moral views of the gatekeepers to the new birth control technology. We show that a larger proportion of religiously opposed health professionals - GPs and pharmacists - around a woman at the time of liberalization cancels out the short- and long-run benefits from pill access.

For centuries, nontimber forest products have been key aspects of household diets throughout the world. In southern Africa, mopane worms are widely harvested for household consumption and traded for income generation. This study investigated the contribution of mopane worm harvesting to rural livelihoods, and the effects of environmental change on mopane worm harvesting in rural households in order to understand how households attain sustainable livelihoods under different tenure types in rural areas in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Specific objectives were to determine the current significance and contribution of mopane worm harvesting and trading to rural livelihoods; to gauge the perceptions of harvesters and traders on forms of environmental change which have affected mopane worm availability and how consumption and trade patterns have changed in the last 20 years; to assess access and management of mopane resources under different tenure types; and, to explore mopane worm use in the context of the sustainable livelihoods framework. The research was conducted in the villages of Bokmakierie, Matiyani, Ha Gumbu, Masisi, Zwigodini, and Mphambo in Vhembe district and Nkomo village in Mopani district in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Additional interviews were conducted with traders at markets in Thohoyandou, Makhado, Malamulele, Giyani and Elim in the Vhembe and Mopane districts, Limpopo Province. The study employed qualitative methods to collect data and included semi-structured household and key informant interviews. The respondents and key informants were identified through snowball sampling techniques. The significance of mopane worms in the study area is three-fold: it is an important source of food, it is a valuable trading commodity, and it is an intrinsic part of local cultural practices. The findings of this study indicated that the historical value placed on mopane worms as a food source and trading commodity has been passed down for generations. Trading was found to be important form of employment for rural people who have limited prospects of formal employment, and had the potential to generate higher income levels than wage labour in rural contexts. The decline in mopane tree density, vegetation change, lower-than-normal precipitation, and higher-than-normal temperatures were the leading forms of environmental change which have significantly affected mopane worm availability and outbreak events. Household consumption and trade patterns were altered as a result of the weather and climatic conditions shock arising from the El Niño phenomenon. Land tenure type was found to be the primary determinant of resource management and access regimes in the harvesting areas. Within the context of the sustainable livelihoods framework, the following findings were made. The limited availability of mopane worms presented a key constraint for the households and traders. The high availability of labour from family of the harvesters suggests human capital is strong. Furthermore, the strong social links and networks which resulted from family-level and community-wide participation strengthened the social capital opportunities. Physical and financial capital were found to have greatest threat to the attainment of sustainable livelihood. Households suffer poverty and are not easily able to access financial resources. This served as a hindrance for households and limited their income earning potential. In respect of these findings the following recommendations are made: further empirical investigations should be undertaken to determine the status of mopane worm populations; improved cooperation between traditional leaders, harvesters and local government is suggested as an option for management of the communal harvesting areas; the interplay between access, land tenure and harvesting requires further research.
