An attempt to explain why presidential popularity declines, through a test of the expectation/disillusion theory proposed by James A. Stimson (see SA 25:3/77I6583), which maintains that popularity declines as unrealistic expectations of presidential performance inevitably yield to more realistic assessments. Stimson's analysis, however, lacks data on expectations of presidential accomplishments, which can be found in cross-national polls conducted between 1977 & 1979 by CBS News & the New York Times, examining the relationship between expectations of presidential achievement, presidential approval, & level of education. Decline in presidential popularity was closely correlated with decline in expectations, evidence of the close association between perception of presidential effectiveness, popularity, & expected accomplishments. 5 Tables, 10 References.
