'The adolescent subculture' is viewed as a historical phenomenon connected with the increasing gap between biological & soc maturity. Having missed the former function of apprenticeship, our civilization did not provide any new function for the adolescent period. Hence suspension of the reciprocity principle & abruptness of the shift from adolescence to adultness, as well as a whole series of discontinuities disrupting the formerly smooth maturing process. Simultaneously the role of educ'al factors not controlled by professional educators is broadening; the role of 'external,' structural variables in determining total HB increases when compared with the role of internalized norms. This new situation demands broadening of the very concept of 'educ' to include manipulating the environmental variables to bring them in line with the direction of cultural determinants. It also demands renunciation of the educ'st's inherent propensity toward 'absolutism.' AA.
