Dinka Marinović Jerolimov and Nikolina Hazdovac Bajić examine the case of Croatia in this chapter, a postcommunist country with a dominant Roman Catholic religious society. The official social welfare system in Croatia started to function in the communist period (1945–1990), more precisely during the 1960s, with the implementation of the first legislation that sought to comprehensively regulate that area and the establishment of independent institutions that deal with social issues. The authors seek to provide insight into the role and function of church-based organizations in the welfare system in Croatia, considering both the communist and postcommunist social and legal context.

Given the decentralization and opening-up that China has been experiencing since 1979, the rise of corruption and the criminal economy can be attributed to the increased opportunities observable at macro-economic level and a context of relative impunity for the most serious offences. Suggests that contrary to the situation prevailing in certain democratic developing countries, criminals in China do not have the option of becoming state representatives, but certain state representatives, notably at local level, are well placed to make choices to the advantages of criminal circles, as happens in Mexico, and so share the illicit gains. In: Education and the urban in India Vol.3
This paper examines the running of an '(extra)ordinary' school in a Delhi locality by sociologically situating it in its dense neighbourhood to revisit the category, 'ghetto'. It traces processes of stigmatisation and stereotyping, relates these to the desperate but resilient efforts of residents to stand on their own two feet and probes the vexed relationship between the school, the locality and the children. The attempt is to grasp the impact of the sociology of the 'ghetto' on the children's education, their mobility, and their 'standing' as emerging adults. This is achieved by showing the interconnections between the ebb and flow of employment, market-swings, the socio-economic and cultural structures of impoverishment, intercommunity conflicts, stereotyping and violence and the resultant reconfiguration of residences on sectarian lines. In so doing, the paper describes, analyses, even questions the production and reproduction of the new urban.
