The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives implemented by large coffee corporations and determine whether their practices could be applied to Oaxaca, Mexico's coffee growing region to improve that region's coffee sector. While Oaxaca has the topographic propensity to grow quality coffee, its success as a reputable coffee growing region has been stagnated. This project indicated that Oaxaca is not prospering in high quality or niche coffee markets due to interrelated issues of inefficiency in the sector, high levels of poverty in coffee growing regions, lack of business training and agronomy education, and inconsistent aid from both state and federal governments. To make up for the region's shortcomings, it is recommended that Oaxaca look to CSR, which in part has been applied through nonprofit organizations' certification schemes such as Fair Trade USA, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ CERTIFIED. This study recommends that Oaxacan farmers first look to systems that focus on farmer training and improving the quality and consistency of their coffee beans. It is then recommended that farmers seek out niche markets and certification schemes that reward farmers with price premiums. By distinguishing their coffee from the conventional coffee market, farmers may "de-commodify" their coffee, making it more valuable and less susceptible to the volatile coffee commodity market. The study also concludes that there is a need for a reform in the sector's auditing practices, and that civil society is a vital component for stimulating increased sales of ethically sourced coffee

There has been much debate surrounding the shift in development policy towards the Post-Washington Consensus and its associated Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers. This article seeks to engage critically with and further this literature by considering the concept of empowerment and its role within this consensus through an examination of development policy aimed at farmer empowerment in Kenya. This is investigated with a focus upon coffee producers in the context of Kenya's coffee reforms and the restructuring of the global coffee industry. While acknowledging the limitations of the dominant approach, exacerbated in the African context due to a problematic interpretation of the African state, it is argued that analyses of empowerment should also consider the opportunities for its re-politicisation. Drawing upon Gramscian thought, this article suggests that fair trade initiatives have the potential to offer an alternative approach to farmer empowerment more capable of challenging the concentration of power among roasters and buyers that has taken place within the coffee industry. The recent interest in and increasing demand for healthy, social and environmentally sustainable products, particularly in developed countries, have fostered the presence of organic coffee supermarket shelves of such countries. Proposes two models of B2B relationships for the Brazilian supply of organic coffee to international markets, more specifically, The Netherlands. For this proposition, compares two possible organizations of the supply chain wherein B2B relationships are based not only on contracts but more importantly on the informal safeguards of mutual trust, long‐term orientation and joint actions. For the two proposed chains, a cross‐border integrator is included to support the coordination of the business relationship. Emphasis is placed on coordination to increase overall efficiency of the supply chain through reduction of internal and transaction costs.
