Free will & action: historical and contemporary perspectives
In: Historical-analytical studies on nature, mind and action, volume 6
This book consists of eleven new essays that provide new insights into classical and contemporary issues surrounding free will and human agency. They investigate topics such as the nature of practical knowledge and its role in intentional action; mental content and explanations of action; recent arguments for libertarianism; the situationist challenge to free will; freedom and a theory of narrative configuration; the moral responsibility of the psychopath; and free will and the indeterminism of quantum mechanics. Also tackling some historical precursors of contemporary debates, taken together these essays demonstrate the need for an approach that recognizes the multifaceted nature of free will. This book provides essential reading for anyone interested in the current scholarship on free will.
Free space in the processes of action research
In: Action research, Band 11, Heft 4, S. 369-385
ISSN: 1741-2617
In Scandinavia there exists an action research tradition called critical utopian action research (CUAR). Within CUAR, criticism and utopia is a core activity in the methods used and in the research as such. The utopian concept in this tradition should be understood as a productive concept, and thus not as eyebrow-lifting fantasy. Utopian horizons are, in light of critical reflection, formulated and developed. They act as horizons indicating the direction of the work. The point of utopian notions – dreams and visions – is that they go beyond 'the existing' and become a way of working that allows us to think in concrete alternatives; in 'different futures'. It allows us to ask the question: how do we wish to live? The rationale for the work of utopia must be found in CUAR's connection to critical theory. From there, a perception that the world could be different is collected. It is only by utopian thinking that we can move the world in a different direction. Thus the notion of utopia becomes part of an ontologically basic understanding. But these different orientations must be developed and protected in a free space. In this article we will focus on the creation of free space for the utopia work.

Moral Hazard and Free Riding in Collective Action
Most political and economic theorists point to moral hazard in teams as the main obstacle to lobbies' collective action. In this paper, we address this important issue with a coalition-formation game. In the process of doing so, we characterize equilibrium lobby structures both in the absence and in the presence of moral hazard. Three notable results emerge from such an exercise: (1) an equilibrium lobby structure exists under both specifications of the model, (2) moral hazard in teams may raise large groups' equilibrium lobby size, and (3) it may also raise the level of collective action of large groups with low organizational costs.

Free Burma: transnational legal action and corporate accountability
When the military's ruling party violently quashed Burma's pro-democracy movement, diplomatic condemnation quickly followed--to little effect. But when Burma's activists began linking the movement to others around the world, the result was dramatically different. This book is the first to explain how Burma's pro-democracy movement became a transnational social movement for human rights. Through the experience of the Free Burma movement, John G. Dale demonstrates how social movements create and appropriate legal mechanisms for generating new transnational political opportunities. He presents three corporate accountability campaigns waged by the Free Burma movement. The cases focus on the legislation of "Free Burma" laws in local governments throughout the United States; the effort to force the state of California to de-charter Unocal Oil Corporation for its flagrant abuse of human rights; and the first-ever use of the U.S. Alien Tort Claims Act to sue a corporation in a U.S. court for human rights abuses committed abroad. Dale's work also raises the issue of how foreign policies of so-called constructive engagement actually pose a threat to the hope of Burma's activists--and others worldwide--for more democratic economic development
